Kinta Yusuf bin Nasam.
It is said that Sir George Maxwell, who in one of his letters described the new school house as
being “painted a rich blue with yellow shutters” and legend has it that this is reason why blue and

windows and small casement windows.
INTRODUCTION
For my graphical booklet ,the main focus is on British colonial building around
Ipoh between the year of 1800 -1930s .As there are so many architecture structure
on a particular building ,so for mine graphical booklet is mainly on the openings of
the historical building around Ipoh .

IPOH

Being one of oldest town in the country, it comes as no surprise that Ipoh hosts a
lot of delectable historic buildings.Since Ipoh was rich with tin especially in the
mid 18th century till the middle of the 20th century ,its towns were some of the
earlier developed towns in colonial Malaya .It is refreshing to see that most of the
buildings are well taken care of, with fresh paints, regular upkeep and informative
narrations provided at major historical landmarks of the area.
The building that I focus on : 1. St.Micheal Institution
2. Anglo-Chinese School
3.The Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank
4. The railway station & Majestic Hotel
5. The Wesley Methodist Church
6. The Birch Memorial Clock Tower
7. The townhal

have many forms, but all fall into three basic categories: Circular, pointed, and parabolic. It can also
be configured to produce vaults and arcades.
THE RAILWAY STATION & MAJESTIC HOTEL

INTRODUCTION
The Ipoh railway station was initially meant to be a hospital and used before the 1900s as such
before being turned into a station .The original completion year of 1917 was delayed for three
years due to lack of construction materials as well as high costs during World War I .In 1935 ,it
was complete constructed ,making it the second concrete station to be constructed in the town
.The building also houses the hotel called the Majestic Hotel .Affectionately known as the Taj
Mahal of Ipoh by its locals .

Built in the year : 1935
Designed by : Arthur Benison Hubback
Located at :

Majestic hotel
ARCHITECTURE
The Ipoh railway station bears a close resemblance to its counterpart in Kuala Lumpur with its
Moorish architecture with modern embellishments. Built in the height of the tin mining
industry in Perak, the station was an important feature for the colonials in transporting tin. Above
the train station, on the second and third floors resides the Station Hotel, also known as The
Majestic Hotel.

THE IPOH TOWNHALL

INTRODUCTION
The Ipoh Town Hall, across the street from the Ipoh Railway Station, was constructed in 1916.
This stately colonial building with strong calssical elements was designed by government
architect A.B. Hubback (who also designed the Ipoh Railway Station) and has been the venue of
many significant events. The Malay Nationalist Party, the first political party formed in Malaya,
held its inaugural congress in the Ipoh Town Hall from November 30 to December 3, 1945,
attended by more than 300 people from all over Malaya. This building was also once the District
Police headquarters in 1948.

Built in the year : 1916
Designed by : government architect ( Arthur Benison Hubback )
Located at : Across the street from the Ipoh railway station
ARCHITECTURE
The building features some interesting Victorian Neo-Penaissance architecture
featuring Greek and Roman elements on the columns. The columns are the Doric
style show more plainly.

THE BIRCH MEMORIAL CLOCK TOWER

INTRODUCTION
A few streets behind the Town Hall there‟s viewed the four-sided Birch Memorial clock tower
which was erected in 1909 in memory of James WW Birch, Perak‟s first British Resident, who
was murdered at Pasir Salak. The panels portray famous figures from world history .

Built in : 1909
Located at : Jalan Market ( opposite Ipoh State Mosque )
ARCHITECTURE
For a small structure it has many details: the tower bells that used to strike the chimes of Big
Ben in London, four terracotta figures perched at the top of the tower which represented the four
virtues of British administration namely loyalty, justice, patience and fortitude and a panel
portraying 44 famous figures from world history across the tower.

The clock tower has one mother bell, 6 ft 6 in. in diameter and weighing 10 cwt.,
and four smaller bells weighing together 10 cwt., which used to strike the chimes
of Big Ben.
The friezes on the clock tower are meant to illustrate the growth of civilisation, featuring figures
such as Moses, Buddha, Shakespeare and Charles Darwin.

The form of Prophet Mohammad was painted out of the panel in the 1990s in keeping with the
Muslims objection to the depiction of the prophet.
THE WESLEY METHODIST CHURCH

INTRODUCTION
Methodist Mission in Singapore was founded. Rev William Fritjames Oldham was appointed to
head the work of the Methodist Church in Malaya. In 1895 , the Methodist Church started a
school (later to be known as Anglo-Chinese School).

THE HONG KONG & SHANGHAI BANKING
CORPORATION

INTRODUCTION
The Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Company was formed in Hong Kong in 1865 by a group
of China-based British colonials who were keen to apply their local knowledge and experience to
the opening China trade .By the 1920‟s the „Hongkers & Shankers‟ was the premier bank of the
East with branches established at Amoy (Xiamen), Bangkok ,Batavia (Jakarta),Bombay ,Calcutta
,Colombo ,Hankow , Ipoh ,Kobe , Kuala Lumpur ,Manila ,Nagasaki ,Penang ,Saigon ,Shanghai
,Singapore ,Tientsin ( Tianjin) and Yokohama.

Built in : 31 October 1931
Designed by : Denis Santry (from the Singapore-based firm of Swam & MacLaren.)
Located in : Along Belfield Street
ARCHITECTURE
Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation is the best example of Victorian
neo-Renaissance architecture .The building with impressive works becomes more
appealing during the nighttime as the lights are shine upon the building.
