9. INTRODUCTION
For my graphical booklet ,the main focus is on British colonial building around
Ipoh between the year of 1800 -1930s .As there are so many architecture structure
on a particular building ,so for mine graphical booklet is mainly on the openings of
the historical building around Ipoh .
IPOH
Being one of oldest town in the country, it comes as no surprise that Ipoh hosts a
lot of delectable historic buildings.Since Ipoh was rich with tin especially in the
mid 18th century till the middle of the 20th century ,its towns were some of the
earlier developed towns in colonial Malaya .It is refreshing to see that most of the
buildings are well taken care of, with fresh paints, regular upkeep and informative
narrations provided at major historical landmarks of the area.
The building that I focus on : 1. St.Micheal Institution
2. Anglo-Chinese School
3.The Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank
4. The railway station & Majestic Hotel
5. The Wesley Methodist Church
6. The Birch Memorial Clock Tower

The Ipoh railway station was initially meant to be a hospital and used before the 1900s as such
before being turned into a station .The original completion year of 1917 was delayed for three
years due to lack of construction materials as well as high costs during World War I .In 1935 ,it
was complete constructed ,making it the second concrete station to be constructed in the town
.The building also houses the hotel called the Majestic Hotel .Affectionately known as the Taj
Mahal of Ipoh by its locals .
Built in the year : 1935

13. ARCHITECTURE
The Ipoh railway station bears a close resemblance to its counterpart in Kuala Lumpur with its
Moorish architecture with modern embellishments. Built in the height of the tin mining
industry in Perak, the station was an important feature for the colonials in transporting tin. Above
the train station, on the second and third floors resides the Station Hotel, also known as The
Majestic Hotel.

For a small structure it has many details: the tower bells that used to strike the chimes of Big
Ben in London, four terracotta figures perched at the top of the tower which represented the four
virtues of British administration namely loyalty, justice, patience and fortitude and a panel
portraying 44 famous figures from world history across the tower.
The clock tower has one mother bell, 6 ft 6 in. in diameter and weighing 10 cwt.,
and four smaller bells weighing together 10 cwt., which used to strike the chimes
of Big Ben.
19. The friezes on the clock tower are meant to illustrate the growth of civilisation, featuring figures
