In today's society there are many issues involving racial inequality. One major issue affecting college students and high school seniors is affirmative
action. Affirmative action is a policy favoring those who tend to suffer from discrimination, especially minorities. Affirmative action started in the
1970's and its purpose is to help universities better diversify their campus with different demographics. At the time, affirmative action was a means of
restitution for human rights abuse African Americans suffered for generations. Today, affirmative action is not limited to blacks, and is a controversial
issue due to higher competition with college acceptance rates.
Those who argue in favor of affirmative action argue that the policy is necessary because it allows universities to maintain diversity and strip
campuses of racial barriers to reflect a better–integrated society. Affirmative action compensates for opportunities lost to minorities andracism.
Supporters also argue that affirmative action benefits all students, not just minorities. It does so by allowing students to better integrate with one
another to prepare them for the workforce.

Many living a contemporary lifestyle in the United States would say there is extreme racial inequality in the wage gap between minorities and the
Caucasian majority. As a matter of fact, Ta–Nehisi Coates, from The Atlantic, recently stated in her 2014 article, "The Case for Reparations" that,
"The income gap between black and white households is roughly the same today as it was in 1970. And whereas whites born into affluent
neighborhoods tended to remain in affluent neighborhood, blacks tended to fall out of them" (Coates, 2017) With some statistics stating that, when
taking into account inflation, the wage gap specifically between African Americans and Caucasian Americans is the same as it was in 1970, eleven
years before the last known racial lynching. Assuming this is considered a problem, one would need to take steps to fix the problem, likely by
minimizing the wage gap. A radical solution would be to criminalize discrepancies in pay in both private and public businesses. Another unfit solution
would be to tax people and redistribute wealth based on race, as this would be considered an even more prevalent form of discrimination against
Caucasian Americans than the current forms of discrimination against African Americans. To find a solution covering a reasonable middle ground, one
could create a social justice movement, bringing attention to the discriminatory pay rates to the public eye, which will hopefully de facto change the
wage gap among all races and minorities.

Inequalities Between Whites and African Americans In order for us to work towards a more racially equal society, we need to know what type of
social policies contribute to racial inequalities. Then, we need to either change those social policies or get rid of them completely. Rothstein focuses
mainly on housing policies, which segregated African Americans from whites. Those social policies did not only constraint African Americans from
buying a house in neighborhoods predominantly white, but it limited their accessibility to other important resources and services such as employment
and education. This is very similar to today's racial inequalities. According to Rohstein, "... St. Louis was segregated by interlocking and racially
explicit public policies of zoning, public housing, and suburban finance, and by publicly endorsed segregation policies of the real estate, banking, and
insurance industries" (30). Real estate agents and banks contributed to this segregation between whites and African Americans. As soon as African
Americans moved to a predominantly white neighborhood, whites would pack their things and leave. According to Rothstein, "Once [a black family]
moved in and was visible, real estate agents solicited nearby homeowners to sell quickly before an imminent influx of black buyers caused their homes

Racial and Ethnic Inequality What is racial and ethnic inequality? To understand racial and ethnic inequality you must understand what is considered
race and what is considered ethnicity. According to our textbook, "Race can be defined as a group or population that shares a set of genetic
characteristics and physical features" meanwhile ethnic groups "are set off to some degree from other groups by displaying a unique set of cultural
traits, such as their language, religion, or diet" (Leon–Guerrero). When others are treated unjustly, whether it is in the workplace, school, community,

It was 1947, eight years before Mississippi lynched Emmett Till. The Great Migration was a mass exodus of six million African Americans out of the
South that spanned most of the 20th century. Blacks did not journey north seeking better wages and work. Rather, they were fleeing the acquisitive
warlords of the South. They were seeking the protection of the law. From the 1930–60s Blacks across the country had no access to legitimate home
mortgages. This happened through means both legal and extralegal. In 1935, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board (FHLBB) asked Home Owners '
Loan Corporation (HOLC) to look at 239 cities and create "residential security maps." The purpose was to show the level of security for real–estate
investments in each city. The resulting redlining caused a large increase in residential racial segregation and urban decay. Redlining denies services to
residents of certain areas based on racial or ethnic criteria. John McKnight, a sociologist and community activist, coined the term in the late 1960s. The
term comes from the practice of marking a red line on a map to delineate the area where banks would not invest. In addition to redlining, many Chicago

now. They have existed at many levels including institutional, collective, and personal. In this paper, I plan to show how previous policies created

According to the article, difference refers to the "unequal absolute amounts of racial or ethnic offending, arrests, convictions, prison sentences, and the
like," (Mears, Cochran, Lindsey, 2015). The article points out that not all crimes and offenders are the same so just because there are differences inrace

The barriers that separate men have existed for centuries. Race, class, status, these are all ideas that have created a divide among humans. This
divide creates competition and tension. Throughout the history of the legal system, justice has been used to validate slavery and other forms of
racial inequality. Our system now has changed, but the basic concept has remained the same. According to one study, the judicial system was
invented by whites to protect whites and keep people of color at bay (Constitutional Rights Foundation, 2017, p1). This idea of preserving a one
superior racial system resulted in a bias still existent today. Racial disparity is when a minority group holds the majority in a certain area. For
example, African Americans make up about 13% of the population, but hold nearly 40% of the population in prison systems (Jones, 2013, p.). The

At a recent conference in Georgetown, American politician and civil rights activist John Lewis, stated that, "the scars and stains of racism are still
deeply imbedded within our society" (Lewis). John's experiences throughout his life fighting for equality, have given him immense perspective on the

At first glance, racism is someone's' belief that his/her race is superior to another– in which is sought to be expressed by only people who are
considered racists by others. Yet, many times, it does not register in one's mind that even though this may be true, there is a type ofracism that we all
have experienced, which has stemmed from the beginning of time– called unconscious racism. Race is a social construct, yet we have not consciously
overridden the biases developed throughout history. Unconscious racism is easy to ignore, and you can barely comprehend that you're doing it,
unless you are the victim. Throughout history, each and every one of us has said remarks which have our own biases in secret, hidden undertones,
and yet unless you are the receiver of the bias, you do not realize what you are doing. Even today, famous people such as Donald Trump
inadvertently showed his unconscious racism in one of his recent speeches. He said, "Some of my best friends are black," (Rosenberg, 2). Which, is a
classic tell–tale racist remark used to preface this unconscious anti–black, and racist expression. Throughout history, the idea of biases has not gone
away– just gotten worse. And, between the infamous Holocaust dealing with Social Darwinism and then with the elongated time period of segregation

By definition social inequality is the existence of unequal opportunities and rewards for different social positions or statuses within a group or society,
and what that means is that if you have ever been interviewing a person and didn't hire them because of their race, religion, or anything like that then

In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee shows a lot of racial or social issues, especially against the African–Americans, such as racial inequality and poor
treatment of the poor or homeless; both of these are still at least partially seen today. Harper Lee uses the unfair trial of Tom Robinson and his cruel
death to show racial inequality, especially towards the African–Americans. Towards the end of the trial, Lee describes how the jury acts when they
come back in as: "A jury never looks at a defendant it has convicted, and when this jury came in, not one of them looked at Tom Robinson..." (Lee
282). Then, Judge Taylor announces the verdict: "Guilty... guilty... guilty... guilty..." (Lee 282). Later on, Atticus comes home after finding out about
Tom Robinson's death: "Tom's dead.... They got him just as he went over the fence.... Seventeen bullet holes in him" (Lee 315). Based on this
evidence, it is clear that racial inequality was evident in the 1930's because with prior knowledge from the novel, we know that Tom didn't stand much
of a chance against the jury because of his being African–American. Also, if a white man had done what Tom did, he probably would have been given
a fairer trial than Tom was. Even though, the police obviously wanted him dead as he tried to escape prison, there was no reason to shoot him
seventeen times. Racial inequality can still been seen in the country, and around the world, but doesn't seem to be as bad as it had been; some
statistics show it improved soon after, but some facts show it took longer. One statistic showing that racial inequality has gotten better states, "In
1980, over 50% of the Blacks aged 25 or more had completed high school, and, by 2012, 85%" (Coleman 183).One fact stating that racial inequality
took a while before improving states, "Even after the slaves were freed, the African Americans continued to face legal discrimination and segregation

Racial Inequality Race has been viewed differently, in the world, these past 400 years. Throughout these years, racial hierarchies have been
defined and created by the people's recognition of inferior people. Skin color is one of many ways inferiority has been seen throughout history
and even to this day. The only reason changes in interpretation of race came to be possible was because of regulations that were put into place
throughout those years, the laws that were created for them, and of course, the nonviolent civil rights movements. Regulations like the "Las Siete

against the Queen. Also, if the owner put a female slave to prostitution, she is to be freed because the owner receives money for it and it is
considered an "ill will". Basically, the "Las Siete Partidas" made it easier for slaves in Spain to become free, hence why they had a large population of

The Importance Of Racial Inequality
As the only sociologist that has been chosen on the North American council I would like to address my main concern, which is that having one
person voice the social inequalities for approximately 580 million people is not just. In my best attempt to be as fair and voice the major concerns
that I feel are prevalent throughout North America, I chose racial inequality, educational inequality, and gender inequality. Before I further discuss
