n In societies throughout the world, the family has
played an important role in supporting and providing
resources to family members. We often think that a
family is composed of a mother and a father joining
forces together to sustain and build a harmonious
relationship with each other to their family units.
However, the definition of family has changed and
broadened these day. Single parents are becoming
more common and their involvement in learning
opportunities, educational progress and school success
of their children may differ from our traditional idea of
a family.
To answer the factors affecting the children’s
school performance living in single-mother families,
this study used phenomenological research under the
qualitative study. Samples were chosen thru snowball
sampling and purposive sampling in identifying single
mothers however controlled conditions are utilized to
minimize sampling bias. Researcher utilizes predefined
The result shows that major factors that have
impacts on children’s school performance are financial
resources and parental styles of discipline. Supervising
their children’s school performance while having a work
and providing extra support to their children when their
salary is just enough for their daily needs affects their
children’s productivity in school. However, the study shows
that financial resources does not directly affect their
children for they still performing well in academics. On the
other hand, parental styles of the respondents also play a
big role in the children’s school performance. The “father
figure” thing was missing in a single-mother families and it
affects their attitude at home however, the reported cases
of their misbehavior in school is minimal in connection of
what kind of family structure they belong.
The result of the study suggests that family
structure itself does not directly affect children’s education
and behavior. It cannot be assumed that every child raised
by a lone mother is going to have difficulties and develop
an unhealthy sense of well-being. The study indicates that
sources of economic and parenting support to promote

Families are considered as the first educators
of their children and they continue to influence their
children’s learning and development during school
years and long afterwards. Parent’s involvement is
essential for children’s growth and development thus
being a single-mother may have an effect on their
involvement to their children’s school performance
and well-being. Number of single-mother families
are surprisingly increasing at Sta Cruz Elementary
School and the researcher wants to explore what
could be the factors living in single-parent families
that may affect the children’s school performance.
Research Question : What are the factors affecting

• Single parents face more family-work conflict resulting to a
higher stress level compared to the two-parent families.
(Riemann et. al ,2019) (Drewry, 2017)
• In the study of Blankenhorn (2017), Greenberg et. al. (2020),
Celeridad (2018) and Salgado (2020) ,children who are living in
a single parent family have different parental styles that is
strongly correlated with poor discipline, social stigma,
delinquency and welfare dependency.
• Lack of economic resources was also linked to the children’s
poor school performance (Coltrane, 2015). Furthermore, time
management between their work and family is one of the
struggle of a single-parent families which many of them fails
resulting a negative impact to their children academic growth.
(Stack, 2017)
• The research literature shows that living in a single-parent has
a negative impact on children’s education and well-being
however the researcher believes that sources of economic and
parenting support to promote healthy wellbeing in children can

conflict between work and family affects the
attention given to their children. Despite of these,
most of single-parents reported that their
children are performing well in school.

Disciplining their children specially boys
were a great challenge to single-mothers. The
“father figure” was missing as they said. Some of
the respondents doesn't know how to handle
them resulting to miscommunication and
misunderstanding. Their situation at home affects
their mood and behavior in school affecting their
school performance. However, minimal cases of
misbehavior was reported.

This study can be an overview of the
factors that affects the school performance
of children living in single-parent families
in Sta Cruz Elementary School .
Furthermore, it can be the stepping stone
of educators in forming and developing
programs that may help children living in
this kind of family structure especially that
we are facing a global pandemic and
parent’s involvement plays a vital role to
the education and well-being of their
children.

While there was a concern driven by cultural
assumptions and previous studies, proposing children
were better off in the traditional two-parent families,
the evidence in this study illuminated that the family
structure itself does not directly affect children’s
education and behavior. It cannot be assumed that
every child raised by a lone mother is going to have
difficulties and develop an unhealthy sense of well-
being.
The study indicates that sources of economic and
parenting support to promote healthy wellbeing in
children can basically be derived from the mother
herself and from extended kin. Raising children alone
is quite challenging to the part of single mothers but
then, it is not possible to raise a good one.
