The world has developed faster than humans even imagined it to. It is coming to a stage where almost everything is beginning to depend on internet. So, what exactly is Internet of Things? Anything and everything which can be assigned an IP address and provided the ability to transfer data can be branched under internet of things.
While it is still a human who operates a computer, when it comes to storing and remembering data, a computer might perform better. This being said, humans have become completely dependent on a system in every walk of their life. Some companies have utilized this opportunity and also leveraged it to derive profits. This has also helped people keep track of latest happenings, of things that they like and more.

Future scope of IoE
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a concept that describes a totally interconnected world. It’s a world where devices of every shape and size are manufactured with “smart” capabilities that allow them to communicate and interact with other devices, exchange data, make autonomous decisions and perform useful tasks based on preset conditions.
IoT is expected to gross over $19 trillion over the next few years. However, the problem is that these ‘things’ have myths surrounding them, some of which are impacting how organizations develop the apps to support them.
Any new technology involves a certain amount of uncertainty and business risk. In the case of the Internet of Things, however, many of the risks have been exaggerated or misrepresented. While the IoT vision will take years to mature fully, the building blocks to begin this process are already in place.
Key hardware and software are either available today or under development; stakeholders need to address security and privacy concerns, and collaborate to implement the open standards that will make the IoT safe, secure, reliable and interoperable, and allow the delivery of secured services as seamlessly as possible.
Businesses across the world are rapidly leveraging the Internet-of-Things (#IoT) to create new products and services that are opening up new business opportunities and creating new business models.
The resulting transformation is ushering in a new era of how companies run their operations and engage with customers. However, tapping into the IoT is only part of the story [6].
For companies to realize the full potential of IoT enablement, they need to combine IoT with rapidly-advancing Artificial Intelligence (#AI) technologies, which enable ‘smart machines’ to simulate intelligent behavior and make well-informed decisions with little or no human intervention [6].
The Internet of Things is coming... and if it stays how it is today, it will be a complete nightmare when it arrives. Different groups are attempting to address the shortcomings, but they all suffer from various shortcomings.

Sensors, Identifiers & Digital Twins: Tracking Identity on the Supply ChainHeather Vescent
Supply chain is a complex ecosystem with many participants, that may include governments, transnational companies, brokers and other middlemen, and local farms, factories, and other suppliers. Another reason supply chain is complex is because it cuts across borders, and must adhere to laws and regulations in multiple jurisdictions: global, national, and local.
This report researched the supply chain through the lens of digital identity for tracking and auditing.

Who will pay for IoT and why? - Atanu Roy Chowdhury, Senior Product Manager a...Lounge47
“WHO WILL PAY FOR IoT AND WHY? " was a thought-provoking session. Here are the Lounge47 key takeaways: 1.IoT is a self-organizing system of Internet connected peripheral systems providing new and improved converged services 2.The value of the digitally charged thing in IoT comes from an extension of the local function with new digital services. Thing(s) + IT=Local function + measurements (historical, instantaneous) leading to new services and supercharged functions 3.The IoT hype is about the opportunity to monetize services from 50b connected devices by 2020 4.IoT devices can be classified by human desires - to know (omniscence), for human connection (telepathy), to protect & be protected (safekeeping), to be healthy & vital ( immortality), to move effortlessly (teleportation), to create, make and play (expression) 5.The IoT difference: Edgeware driving value, the “ecosystem of devices” paradigm and the possibilities for entrepreneurship 6.PC to Mobile industry to IoT is transitioning the traditional “top down” to a more collaborative approach 7.Value to the customer: a.high resolution real-time information b.M2M silos interconnected for greater visibility c.Interoperated and leveraged common infrastructure d.low cost solution solving specific consumer pain points e.improved traceability, resource utilization, health and safety 8.Value to developer: a.can handle multiple business models b.can handle multiple deployment models c.can create new products and services to diversify revenues d. Services in addition to devices can be created by developers 8. The actors in the IoT ecosystem – those that, discover new services, deliver supercharged services, create supercharged services, create Smart Things 9.Technical best practices: a.cost of data acquisition is not homogeneous b.diversity in sensors, devices and vendors is endemic c.business requirements can exceed technology reach d.device failures will happen, plan to handle them e. ensure that products are certified f.security is not an afterthought 10.Business best practices: a.device costs are a function of volumes, functionality and robustness b.there is a creepiness factor to IoT solutions c.new services require training d.market potential is hard to guesstimate e.Know your competition f.understand local regulations and tax regimes g.Process changes will be resisted h.Disgruntled customers seldom return 11. Different Business Models should be considered.
In summary, IoT offers significant opportunities, but the successful players will be those that emphasize and deliver value relative to existing services rather than just offer new functionality with undeterminable value.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Is 2014 the Year of The Internet of things?
1. IS 2014 THE YEAR OF THE
INTERNET OF THINGS?
Paul Bevan
12th March 2014
2. The Internet of Things
A Definition
• The Internet of Things (IoT) is a
scenario in which objects, animals or
people are provided with unique
identifiers and the ability to
automatically transfer data over a
network without requiring human-to-
human or human-to-computer
interaction
• The Internet of Things is the network of
physical objects that contain
embedded technology to
communicate and sense or interact
with their internal states or the external
environment
3. It started with a Coke (possibly)
• Programmers at Carneige
Mellon University in early 1980s
hooked up the machine to a
computer so they could tell if had
stock and was working before
walking downstairs to get a
Coke!
4. Machine to Machine (M2M) Technology is
not new
• Has existed since the advent of
computer networking
• Tethered implementations
• Large scale industrial process
control, telemetry etc.
• RFID presages wider use based
on wireless technology
• Supply chain use cases
• US Dept of Defense
• Pharmaceuticals chain of custody
5. The Growth of the internet, Cloud and
wireless technologies is new
• Wireless frees the intelligent
devices
• Moore’s law and the development
of cloud technologies makes it cost
effective to process and store the
vast amount of data that is being
captured
• The internet provides a mechanism
for monitoring and controlling
devices on a global basis
• IPv6 lifts the restriction on number
of internet addressable devices
• At the end of 2012 Cisco calculated
that there were 8.7 billion devices
connected to the internet
7. The Potential to Disrupt Business Models
• Just Imagine…
• the embedded chip on your inkjet printer senses the
ink is low
• It alerts the 3D printer at the plant to make you a new
cartridge
• Which is picked up automatically by an Amazon
drone and delivered to your house
• Where the secure drop off unit acknowledges receipt
• So that the virtual payment card in your e-wallet
activates a message on your smartphone
• For you to hit the one-click payment button and
transfer funds to the inkjet cartridge manufacturer
How many parts of that supply chain have,
or could be disrupted?
8. Some challenges along the way
• Battery power
• Standards
• Network protocols
• Open APIs
• Security and Privacy Concerns
• “spam in the fridge”…” a fridge too
far”
• Business Models
• Revenue
• Infrastructure Costs
• Support
The dots need to be joined up
9. …but the implications and opportunities are
significant
• Big Data analysis
• Growth of data storage
• Wireless networking, bandwidth etc.
• Application frameworks
• Operational efficiencies
• Know your (and everyone else’s) customer…intimately
Let’s break out what’s happening in the
area of Big Data
10. In 2014 the strongest Big Data business will
be in services and software rather than
storage arrays
Figure1- Source:Wikibon2013
12. Storage hasn’t joined the Big Data party yet
• Storage systems decline
4.8% to $27.9 bn
• Disk drives fall 0.3% to
$45.1 bn
• Flash drives grow by 7.4%
to $5.6 bn
• EMC leads the storage
systems market
• Western Digital and
Seagate lead the disk drive
market
• SK Hynix, Micron and TI
lead the NAND market
The discrepancy in growth after 2008
demonstrates that many users don’t need
system vendors to handle unstructured data
challenges

15. There probably won't be a big breakout
moment for the Internet of Things in 2014
• Don’t get carried away
• We are will on the way to 50 billion devices on the internet by 2022
