 What is irrigation?
 Irrigation is an artificial water supply for dry agricultural land by means
of dams, barrages, channels or other devices.
OR
 Irrigation may be defined as the artificial application of water to soil for
the purpose of supplying moisture essential for plant growth.
Source of irrigation water:
 1.Surface water
 Gravity(canal) : 1,56,000 ha
 Low lift pump : 6,90,000 ha
 Traditional (Manual pumping): 3,63,000 ha
 2.Ground water
 DTW : 6,70,000 ha
 STW : 17,70,000 ha
 Hand tube well : 32,000 ha
Total Irrigation area : 36,90,000 ha of land
 History of irrigation
 In 1960, systematic irrigation stated in Bangladesh with the
introduction of low lift pumps & DTWs by the government employer
Akter Hamid Khan in Comilla district. STWs came into operation
after 1980, Bangladesh has a land area of about 14.4 million
hector of which 9.03 million ha(64%) are under cultivation.
Irrigation is currently available to less than 50% of the land that
can be irrigated in
 Irrigation devices commonly used in Bangladesh
 1.Motorized pumps (DTW ,STW, turbine pump, low lift pump etc.)
 2.Manual pumps (don, swing basket , treadle pump, hand tube
well etc.)
 Irrigation project in Bangladesh
 1.G.K project: In1954 area: 1,97,500ha, Ganga & Kobadak river
 3. Chandpur Irrigation Project: In 1973 to 1978 area: 57,000ha; Meghna
& Dakatia river
 4.Barrindra Irrigation Project(BIP): In 2007 area: 7,500acre; Bogra,
Rajshahi
 5. Teesta Barrage Project: In 1945 area:7,50,000ha; teesta river.
Methods of Irrigation commonly used in Bangladesh
1. Basin method: This method is widely used for rice irrigation.
2. Border method: Used slightly sloping land.
3. Furrow method: Suitable for line sown crops such as sugar cane, potato.
4. Sprinkler method: Mostly suitable for undulated land & Hilly areas.
In Bangladesh about 94% of the irrigated land is under small and minor
Irrigation.
 According to recent survey water is being lifted in
this country through(23march,2015, National
Encyclopedia of Bangladesh)
 DTWs : 26,704 nos.
 STWs : 4,69,226 nos.
 Low lift pumps : 56,829 nos.
 Manual pumps : 1,42,132 nos.
 Indigenous water lifting devices : 5,65,000 nos.
 In Bangladesh, both shallow & deep tube wells are widely used.
General description:
 Location: Muhuri Irrigation Project was
constructed at Sonagazi upazila of Feni district.
 Duration: In between the year of 1977-78
to 85- 86
Objectives:
 Construction of about 5 miles of coastal
earthfill embankments and a dam of about 1.5
miles across the Feni River Channel
 Improvement of 110 miles of natural channels
and the excavation of 6 miles of new channels
 Installation of about 1,100 low-lift pumps to
raise water from the channels to adjacent
farmlands
 Heavy sedimentation in the intake channel of
the pumping plants
 Insufficient water supply due to poor
pumping plant condition;
 Inadequate and undependable power supply;
