Client research:
Irn bru is aimed at the people of Scotland because they
consider it as one of their national drinks along with whisky.
Irn Bru was first made in 1901 in Falkirk and it is now
produced in Westfield, Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire by
A.G. Barr. In the
Client research:
Marketing:
Barr had a gimmick associating with Scottishness. Their tagline was “Made in Scottish
girders which was used for several yeas in the 1980s. And in the adverts it usually
featured people drinking Irn Bru then magically strong, durable or magnetic.
This is an example of a anti-realist advert because you don’t become strong, durable or
magnetic if you drink Irn Bru. The people who made the advert wanted to make people
think that it might happen to them also the line of appeal in that advert would be what
you dream about you being strong.
The newer Irn Bru adverts from the year 2000 onwards the adverts became a
controversial comedy skit and when something bad happened they used to drink a bit of
Irn bur to say something better. This is an example
Client research: old poster ads
The old poster ads where tame compared to the new poster ads.
The old poster ads would normally have someone in the middle
holding a bottle of Irn Bru. Then normally at the to of the poster
it would say BARR’S and the at the bottom of the poster it would
say IRN BRU
Client research: new poster ads
Irn Bru has a variety a funny and witty posters that will
easily recognized the poster because it has a can of Irn
Bru at the bottom of the poster and the background is a
bright orange or yellow background with blue righting.
And it also has a picture hat takes up half the poster and
that is normally in black and white
Client research: brand association
We associate Irn Bru with the colure orange and the colure blue.
The colures of the Irn Bru is embedded in our minds so when ever
we see blue and orange together we might think ooh I fancy an Irn
Bru . Also we associate Irn Bru with Scotland because the slogan
said made in Scotland from girders which links Irn Bru with
Scotland.
Brand association is where we recognize a company by the
colure or their logo for example Asda we recognize Asda with
the colure green because Asda’s logo is a Asda in white with a
green background.
Client research: conclusion
To conclude Irn Bru is easily recognized because of the colure scheme and of the
slogans.
Also we found out that the crude humor of Irn Bru can reach to a audience on
teenagers and young adults.
Also to conclude Irn Bru is a easily recognized brand of soft drink which is mainly
from Scotland and the UK
Market research: different companies
There are many companies that compete with Irn
Bru such as Pepsi, Coca Cola , Dr Pepper and
sprite to name a few. Irn Bru has to compete with
all of these massive brands.
Coca Cola is easily recognized with their adverts
because they have a catchy theme tune that you
cant get out of your head. Also you see the coke
brand every in movies and in TV shows so we get
the logo branded into our mind.
Unlike Coke, Irn Bru doesn't’t have much
spotlight in film and TV so it doesn't’t get much
spot light over Coke and Pepsi.
At most Bars around England they
mainly have Coke, Diet coke, sprite and
water. So they don’t have Irn Bru on tap
around England because it isn't that
popular in England.
Market research: continental sales
Australia:
In Australia it started to be
produced and distributed under
license by Occasio Australia Pty
Ltd. And they where available in
500ml and 1.25L bottles and they
where available in both standard
and diet. And they where sold in
major chains such as Coles and
Woolworths
Denmark:
In Denmark they only started to
sell Irn Bru in 7eleven, Rema
1000 and in Netto. Now they
only sell it in a few 7elevens
and most Føtex and Bilka stores
sell Irn Bru.
Hong Kong:
In Hong Kong Irn Bru can be
found at the Wellcome
store and you can also find
Irn Bru around the Sheung
Wan and the central
districts
Middle East:
Just recently in the middle
east Barr has just recently
introduced it and you can
find Irn Bru in the LuLu
supermarket
Audience research:
From this profiler it shows us that the average gender of the
people who drink Irn Bru is male. The average age of the people
who drink Irn Bru. The region where Irn Bru is drunk the most is
in central Scotland. The main profession of people who drink Irn
Bru is and engineer.
Audience research: age and the gender
In a survey I did with a couple of collage
students and I found out that most of the
people we asked where 16 and 17 years old.
Which is good because the average age
group who actually drinks Irn Bru is of the
age of 25 to 39 so it is good to get the view
of younger people.
Within the same survey we asked the
gender of the students and the majority of
the students we asked where male. But
the main gender that drinks Irn Bru are
male so we can get a good view on the
males and what they like.
Audience research: primary research, questionnaire
For primary research we had to make 3 questions and
then we had to get 3 people to answer them to find out
more about soft drinks and Irn Bru.
Questions
1. Apart from Pepsi, Coke and Irn Bru what other soft drink would
you drink and why.
Sprite, I like the taste of it
2. What is your favorite Irn Bru advert and why.
The one with the baby called Fanny.
3. How would you describe the taste of Irn Bru
I drank it a long time ago but from what I remember it doesn’t taste
very nice.
Questions
1. Apart from Pepsi, Coke and Irn Bru what other soft drink would
you drink and why: Sprite, as it has a sweet flavour, and has a
lemony taste to it.
2. What is your favorite Irn Bru advert and why: the new baby advert,
as its very humerous, and it shows how irn bru got the man through
3. How would you describe the taste of Irn Bru: It tastes like a flatter
fanta. It has the right amount of flavor though, as it isn’t sickly, but not
too bitter.
Questions
1. Apart from Pepsi, Coke and Irn Bru what other soft drink would
you drink and why –Lucozade because I like the orange flavoring
in it.
2. What is your favorite Irn Bru advert and why – The Snowman
advert because I found it funny as it was a parody of a very
recognizable film.
3. How would you describe the taste of Irn Bru- I don’t like the taste
of it because there is something in the flavoring that I dislike and
reminds me of the smell of a cleaning product my grandma used to
use.
Idea Generation: mood board for my print ad
My idea for a print ad is to use old propaganda posters and
poke fun at it a bit by telling them to drink Irn Bru and I will
put the face of Braveheart on the faces of the people on the
posters. And I will try to change the color scheme to orange.
Propaganda is in adverts
and you don’t even
know it making you want
to but something. This is
why for my Irn Bru
advert I want to take the
mick out of it my
actually using
propaganda posters
from the past
Idea Generation: mood board advert game
My idea for a advergame is a 8 bit game with a 8 bit Scottish guy
collecting Irn Bru in the Scottish highland. I got my idea from all
of the retro Mario games.
Here are some examples of
some advergame by
different companies such as
Oreo and McDonalds
Idea Generation: mood board for TV Ad
My idea for my Irn Bru advert
is to make it look like an
action move but the main
character isn’t the best so he
gets a can of Irn Bru from his
pocket and drinks it and then
he can fight the bad guys.
Another idea I have is to
take the mick of action
movies for example doing
all of the clichés like
walking away from a
explosion which was
caused by shaking up an
Irn Bru can
My final idea I had is
that the good guy is
being chased by
some thugs and he
gets cornered so he
drinks a can of Irn
Bru and then starts
doing parkour
Group Idea:
In our team we each came up with
one idea each and then we shared
it with each other. The idea we
went for was Josh’s which was a
wild west theme but me and
Andreas helped develop the idea
for the advert.
As a team we also thought of what
our advert will be like so as a group
we decided that we will have it like a
western duel and one of them gets a
gun and one of them drinks Irn Bru
and is bullet proof.
Individual Idea: game
My ide for the game is to
have a cowboy who is
running collecting cans of Irn
Bru whilst avoiding obstacles
such as cactuses.
Another idea I had was to bit
crush some music such as The
good, The Bad, The Ugly or
something like the house of the
rising sun
Individual Idea: print
One idea had for my print was
to have 2 Irn Bru cans having a
duel with each other which will
keep with the theme of Irn Bru
because Irn Bru’s adverts are
normally funny and that the
same with their print ads so I
want to make my print ad quite
funny.
On idea I have is to have a table with a
letter which has my own rendition of
the famous the good the bad the ugly
quote on it and then surrounding the
letter will be iconic props from
westerns like a gun and bullets, a
sheriff badge and a hat. And a can of
Irn Bru next to the letter.
Individual Idea: TV ad
When editing my advert I had a couple
of ideas such as when I shoot the fun a
bullet would shoot out curving and
hitting the Irn Bru can. I thought this will
look affective because our theme is a
western.
Also for my TV advert I thought of
the idea of having close up shots
of the hands going towards their
guns and then a shot of their face
twitching ready to fire
Planning Docs (TV Advert):
Planning Docs (Advergame):
Game concept:
The concept for my game will be in the
style of a retro 8bit game such as Mario.
The main focus on the game will be
following a cowboy who id trying to get
back his precious golden and diamond
encrusted Irn Bru can. On the way he
will collect Irn Bru to gain point. Also
you have to avoid cactus while
collecting Irn Bru.
Level design
My level will be a
Mario esc game so
there will be some
platforms and some
enemies that you
have to defeat and
on the level there
will be Irn Bru cans
dotted around. The
background for the
level will be a desert
with
Sounds/sound effects
The sounds that I need
for my game should be
the enemies, the
enemies dying, gun
shot, character,
character jumping,
power up, item
collection, horse
neighing.
Music
The music that I will
use will be an 8 bit
crushed version of the
music for the film that
I will make.
Planning Docs (Print Advert):
I had a couple of ideas for my print
but it was quite hard to manipulate
into a print advert because I cant
use Photoshop well and also it is
hard to get the images I need on the
saloon background and the town
background. But now have fount a
really cool rustic wild west piece of
paper on the internet and I am going
to use that as my background.
Another idea I had was to have 2 cans
of Irn Bru having a duel which would
be quite funny and would keep with
the theme of Irn Bru which is humor
and it also links with our groups
theme which is The wild west.
Planning Docs (Print Advert):
Our group thought of the idea to use a
famous quote from a Clint Eastward
movie called The Good, The Bad and The
Ugly and change some of the words in it.
The original quote is “you see in this
world there are 2 people my friend.
Those with loaded guns and those who
dig, you dig.” but our idea was to change
it for our Irn Bru print so we changed it
to “there are 2 men in this world those
who drink Irn Bru and those who don’t,
you do.”
For my font I downloaded lots of western style fonts
from a website called www.dafont.com which is really
good because it is full of different fonts. The fonts I
downloaded where saloon, Texas tango and western.
The one I chose was saloon because it just popped out
for me and looked really affective
For the colure of my font I had 2 ideas one of my ideas
was to have the Irn Bru colures but I went for a textured
font so I tried to find something to link with the
western theme so I thought of the idea of using
wooden planks because it looked like a saloon.
Finished Stuff: game
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1m2qEqQcLI
In my game I originally
was going to have an
enemy and someone
firing a gun but that
was going to be a bit
complicated. T=but the
thing that was good
was the sound effects
that my character does
and the sound effects
from the can of Irn Bru
Finished Stuff: poster
For my poster I kept the the wild
west theme but instead of using
humor like I was going to with the
dueling Irn Bru cans I decided to go
with something quite simple but it
is really effective. My poster is
supposed to represent the things
you might find on wild west table
such as a gun, hat, sheriff badge,
bullets and of cause an Irn Bru can.
Finished Stuff: TV Ad
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CLRwqcbaRg
The things that worked was
my special effects such as the
bullet curving towards
Andreas hitting the can and all
of the sound effects that was
with the gun scene such as
the bullet the bullet hitting
the can and the noise of the
gun firing
