Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:
1. describe statistics and the basic terms used
in statistics.
2. differentiates qualitative and quantitative
data, and continuous and discrete variable
3. identify the uses and importance of Statistics

Statistics
-a branch of Mathematics that deals
with the collection, organization,
presentation, analysis, and
interpretation of data.
Common Terms in Statistics
A population is a complete collection of all
elements (scores, people…) to be studied.
A sample is a sub-collection of elements
drawn from a population.
Data
-a collection of facts or set of
information or observation under study
Types of Data
1. Quantitative data -deals with
numbers.
Examples: age, IQ scores, height,
weight, income
Types of Data
2. Qualitative data -deals with
description.
Examples: gender, citizenship,
educational attainment, religion
