PEDODONTICS
INTRODUCTION
DEFINITIONS
 Stewart, Barber,Troutman,Wei (1982)
“Pediatric dentistry is the practice and teaching of
comprehensive, preventive, and therapeutic oral health care
of child from birth through adolescence. It is constructed to
include care for special patients who demonstrate mental,
physical, or emotional problems.”
 American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (1999)
“Pediatric dentistry is an age defined specialty that provides
both primary and comprehensive preventive and therapeutic
oral health care for infants and children through adolescence
including those with special health care needs.”
The key elements of this definition which make pediatric dentistry unique:
1. “age-defined”: most specialties are procedure defined (endodontics, periodontics,
etc.) and in pediatric dentistry, the pediatric dentists provide care for their specific
age group of patients. Hence, there is no limitation to the type of treatment they
provide.
2. “primary and comprehensive care”: Pediatric dentists are primary oral health care
providers. There is no need for a referral of patients. Parents can choose to have their
children evaluated and treated by a pediatric dentist just like they can choose to have
their child treated by a pediatrician.
3. “infants and children through adolescence”: Pediatric dentists see patients at any
age from birth up to their late teens.
4. “special health care needs”: Pediatric dentists are trained to evaluate and treat
medically compromised children such as children with hemophilia, leukemia,
congenital anomalies, syndromes, etc.
