Mohandas Gandhi was born in 1869 in India. He studied law in England and took his first job in South Africa, where he began fighting for the rights of Indians. After many years of nonviolent protest in South Africa and later India, Gandhi helped India gain independence from Britain in 1947, just before his death. His strategy of nonviolent civil disobedience inspired independence movements around the world.
