2. Instructor’s information
• Dr. Trần Hương Lan-Faculty of Applied Science
• Email: lanth@hcmute.edu.vn
• When writing email to me, please put
“Calculus 2-<Subject>” in the subject line.
3. Course information
• Course code: MATH132501E
• Course title: Calculus 2
• Number of credits: 3
• Course prerequisite: Calculus 1
• Textbook: Calculus (chapters 6-9), 6th edition,
Strass, Bradley, Smith
4. Course website
• Textbook, lecture notes, videos, assignments,
quiz, sample exams: see on the course
webpage
https://fhqx.hcmute.edu.vn
• You will need a username and a password to
log in.
• The videos are provided as a support and
should not be used as a substitute for
attending class.
5. Topics
• Using integrals to calculate geometrical and
physical quantities
• Polar coordinates
• Integration techniques
• First-order differential equations
• Improper integrals
• Infinite series
• Series representation of a differentiable function
• Vector operations
• Equations of lines and curves
6. Expected learning outcomes
1. Set up and evaluate integrals to compute important
geometrical and physical quantities
2. Use the polar coordinates
3. Apply integration techniques to solve integrals
4. Compute improper integrals
5. Solve and apply first-order differential equations
6. Investigate the convergence of infinite series;
7. Find series representation of differentiable functions;
8. Perform algebraic computation of vectors in plane
and space; Use vectors to solve practical problems
9. Write the equations of lines and curves
7. Method of study
• Attend class (3 hours a week).
• Ask questions during class.
• Ask questions using LMS forum or send email to me.
• Read content before going to class.
• Do assignments every week.
• Do a lot of assignments, quizzes in order to master the
concepts and acquire problem solving skills.
• You must FOLLOW THE FHQLMS page for materials,
quizzes, assignments, extra credit projects.
8. What is NOT important?
• Memorizing lots of formulae (materials are allowed
during tests). But you should know WHEN to use
formulae, and HOW.
• Writing down all the decimal digits that the
calculator gives you.
• Taking copy notes on everything I say-unless that
helps you to understand the material. Your
TEXTBOOK contains many more words than I will
explain you during the course.
9. Method of assessment
• Graded activities:
– Attendance (5%)
– Exams (2 exams=30%)
– Homework (15%)
– Bonus (up to 10%)
– Final exam (50%)
• Ungraded activities are used to monitor the
progress of students: exercises to be completed
during the class, questions to the students,
answer of students question during class and
during office hours.
10. General policy
• Absence in class exams or quizzes is not accepted
and students will not have a chance to do them
again.
• Whether an absence is excused or unexcused is
determined solely by the instructor.
• Students are asked to ensure a spirit of complete
honesty and a high standard of integrity.
• There will no tolerance for cheating or plagiarism.
The punishment is determined solely by the
instructor.
