8. Section B
• A large part of our second year will focus on the representations
of working class and how it’s represented through out the
chosen films and programmes. We look at how representation's
are mediated and how different time periods present different
views on the working class. Mise-en-scene, sound, lighting and
editing all help present the working class in particular ways
which then can influence the audiences opinion on the working
class. Looking at theorists and their explanations can help us
understand representations and how we decode the messages
given to us. You look at past, present and future representations
of the working class and from this you need to identify the
attitudes towards and of the working class people. In section B,
you will show an understanding of media texts, audiences and
debates. To do this you must combine your knowledge from a
range of media.

Working
class
The working class are part of a social group consisting of people who earn
little money, but do mainly manual or industrial work. There tends to be a
strong community spirit but stereotypically they have very stereotypical
views. Working class views have often been mediated in a particular way in
order to make the audience think a particular way. One example of this, is
Benefit Street, where the working class are mediated in a more negative
stereotype as they are portrayed as lazy, living off the hard working citizens
of the UK. There are two types of audiences; Active and Passive. Passive
audiences simply believe what they see or hear, almost like an injection of
opinions. Active audiences is when they receive the information thats being
given but actively make their own mind up.

Preliminary Task
For this preliminary task we were challenged to make our own Radio
Review on the film Pride. Before we watched the film, we researched
who wrote, directed and produced the film and researched the
background on them and their institutions. During the film, we made
notes on how the working class was represented and if they followed
their typical stereotypes. After watching the film, it was time to learn
how to use garage band and use royalty free music. Raz showed us
how to use both recording devices and how to edit them online. It was
fun writing our scripts, choosing our background music and watching it
all come together. Here is our radio segment named “Radio Review”

FEEDBACK AND CONCLUSION
We made and handed out 15 questionnaires to those in our class to see what
feedback we would receive. All 15 pupils believed we followed the codes and
conventions of a stereotypical radio show. The clips and music looked to be very
popular as they gave a formal interview a more intriguing, interesting element. They
all agreed that the facts we stated was true and the clips we used were relevant
to the points we were discussing. A few mentioned to add a music bed to improve
our radio show and also to make more of an introduction. One person also suggested
that next time to make the interview more conversional and to make some cuts
more smooth. Next time we do a radio show, I will take both the positive comments
and the feedback we've been given in order to make an even better radio episode.
