5 skills of teaching jolly phonics
5 skills of teaching jolly phonics by Jolly Reading
Jolly Phonics, a reading program based on a systematic synesthetic phonics
approach, was developed by Sue Lloyd (previously a teacher at Woods Loke
Primary School, Lowestoft, England) and Sara Wernham (publisher: Jolly
Learning, the UK, owned by Christopher Jolly).
Jolly Phonics caters to children of all abilities and is multisensory, child
centered and fun. Jolly Phonics teaches literacy through synthetic phonics
using a child-friendly approach. Multi-sensory methods are very
motivating for children. It is supported scientifically by evidence and has
been accepted around the world.
Jolly Reading www.jollyreading.in
The program focuses on the teaching and practice of the English alphabetic
code. The phonics curriculum is not designed to replace English lessons.
There are actions for every 42 letter sound. The Letter Sound Order chart
below shows how the letter sounds are divided into seven groups.
Jolly Phonics consists of five core skills:
1.Learning the Letter Sounds
2. Learning Letter Formation
3. Blending
4. Identifying Sounds in Words
5. Tricky Words
You will find examples and explanations for all 5 core skills below.
1. Learning the Letter Sounds:
Learning the Letter Sounds
The main 42 sounds of English are taught - One sound per day,in the Jolly
Phonics recommended order.
s , a , t , i , p , n
c k , e , h , r , m , d
g,o,u,1,f,b
ai,j,oa,ie,ee,or
Z , W , ng,V , 00 , 00
y, x , c h , s h , t h , t h
qu , ou , oi , ue , er , ar
To introducechildrento the letters, a multisensoryapproach is used. Each
soundis given a storyline and an action, as well as a Sound Sheet. The
childrenwill be more likely to remember whatthe sound is bydoing
something associated with it.
For example, theycan rub their stomachs and say "mmmmm", for the /m/
sound.
The'r' sound is taught by doing action with twohands spread and moving
like an aeroplane 'RRRRRRR......'.
The 'h' soundcan be taught as ifone is tired and making 'ha......'noise.
Each child is given a unique 'Sound Book. Eachday, thesoundbook
containsthe lettersound. The bookcan be kept and taken homewitheach
child. Parents are asked to help childrenlearn the sounds. This can be done
by reading theSound Bookand/or cutting up the letters. To be able to
blend quickly, it is necessaryto learn thelettersounds fluent. The
flashcards ofevery dayshould be displayedfor children to useas a visual
aid. Two letters can representsome sounds, called digraphs. Childrenneed
to be able to recognizedigraphs withinwords, such as the 'ng' in strong'.
Eachdigraph 'oo'and 'th' havetwo sounds: e.g., book and moon, thin and
that.Jolly Phonics has themwritten in two sizesat first to makeit easier
for children to understandthe two sounds.
2. Learning Letter Formation:
Learning Letter Formation
Children are taught howto correctly form eachletter as they learn the
lettersounds. Initially, the teacherwill havethechildrenform the letters
simultaneouslyin the air. After the first 12weeks, most childrenwill be
able to form letterscorrectly byfeeling and writing each letter.
It is also important that children learn howto properly hold their pencils,
using thetripod grip.
Jolly Phonics makes useofthe Sassoon Infant text face withjoining tails.
This makes it mucheasier for children to learn cursive Goined-up) writing.
Jolly Phonics wasextensivelyresearched and found to be extremely
effective. Here are some quotations from three researchprojects that dealt
with synthetic phonics. One in England and one eachin Scotland and
Canada. A synthetic phonics method emphasizes both teaching individual
letter sounds and howtheycan be combined to form words. This is Jolly
Phonics'core approach to teaching.
