Semester 5.5, January 2017
Period: 03.01.2017 – 10.03.2017 (10 weeks)
Tutor: Mr. Angus
I am so glad for this opportunity to have my first and only internship at Taipei,
Taiwan during my 3 years architecture course. I really gain much through these 10
weeks and I think it is worth to have internship overseas. Beware on how people
organize a firm, how people fight for competition and how people complete a
proposal within few month.
The first task assign by my architect is to produce a demonstration material; we
usually called it as DM. This DM is about our design company, some excellent and
awarded company projects and works and the 3 main proposals, which are sightseeing
factory, adaptive reuse, health and leisure industry. The purpose of doing this DM is
because our company is having transformation recently and our architect is looking
for China market. The reason of choose sight sightseeing factory, adaptive reuse,
health and leisure industry as the 3 main industries is because our architect think this
is what China lacking and is not doing well recently, these might be the opportunity to
move into China market. So, the DM is used to introduce our company, the
characteristics of our company and of course to show how good we can do with these
3 industries.
For my own task, I was involved in sightseeing factory industry. I have no idea
about this industry, so a lots of research and case studies to support the proposal later.
A success sightseeing factory will have many interesting spaces and maybe attractive
outlook. Sightseeing factory emphasizes on the experience and the interaction
between the brands itself or product with the visitors. But for current situation, our
architect wanted us to focus more on the business models as the China market will
emphasis and pay more attention on the economic benefits for example how much is
the cost of constructing this industry or is this industry earn money instead of the
design. Because of this, I faced many problems and mistakes during the process.
Although I am doing something far from my current stage and far form what I
supposed to learn in this internship, but I still felt grateful on doing this task as I got
the chance to know about how to use architecture to earn money and how to complete
a full proposal with design and business models. I believe this is what most of the
designs firm looking for.
This is the proposal I did. Using company’s previous design scheme to modified
and edit into my proposed sightseeing factory. This is what my architect taught us, for
design proposal, we have to use the fastest and the easiest way to get thing done, but
of course the quality must be there, we should let the client notice our hardworking
and intelligent. When project comes, then we only put all the efforts and time on the
real case.
For company introduction, I was in charged in company’s works. Find out all the
excellent projects’ renderings, drawings and article from huge and messy digital
database. Next will be summarizing and translating all the descriptions. The following
are the outcome.
Second task is to design a clock tower right in front the new MRT station from
TaoYuan Airport to Taipei Station. They named it as A1 station; “A” means the first
station from the airport. We were so excited when we knew that we are going to
involve in this project. The period from the day we receive the task until the proposal
deadline is just one week time. We started to discuss about the concept, the design,
brainstorming, sketching and look at people works straight after the day.
People believe that this station is an emotional station. When people reach or
back to Taiwan, this will be the first station and place they will reached. In the other
side, this station will be the last meeting point when people are leaving. Going back to
the clock tower, the clients hope to see something soft which can bring up the
emotional feeling rather than sharp and corner which make people feel so offended.
The purpose of this clock tower located outside the station of course is used to show
time as time is so important to someone when they are rushing for flight but the main
reason is to play advertisements on the LED screen and have some interactions with
the screen. Another project with strong business purpose again.
We went site visit on the next morning and the photos above is the station. Without
any measure tools, we measured the area by footprint and measured the height by
using human scale. Finishing some sketches of the surrounding contexts and plans
with the fastest way.
During the deadline day, we noticed that there are a lots of details like the clock
is sponsored by someone, so the clock is fixed to be look like this or the LED
advertisement screen is for eye level, its not suitable to place at the top place that we
did not know from the beginning. Additional, our design is mostly focus on the people
with the tower, but what required from the client is just want to gain money from the
advertisements and focus more on the screen. After this first meet up, I realize that,
architecture has no value when it meets “money”, the thing they want from us is just
our “creativity”. Feeling appreciate that I was beware on this in this stage.
Some conceptual models we have done.
For the second proposal attempt preparation, we did a lot models to test the
possibilities of the shape. Architect advised us to try more models instead of keep
sketching on the paper. Models are faster and it could create some shape or angle that
cannot be explore from sketching sometimes. I did involve in design and models
making and also did some Photoshop for one of the design scheme.
Lastly, we came out with this curvy shape. It represents a Taiwan’s precious
blue bird, its head and its tail. Its tail is carrying a clock that looks like the bird is
protecting the time. LED screen is located at eye level and people could easily interact
with people.
Some photo montages I did for the proposal.
I did some architecture diagrams for the second proposal.
The final outcome of the clock tower with interactive LED advertisement screen, a
classic clock on top and attached Tong Blossom windmills at one side of the strip.
The first proposal with 2 schemes.
Another task is to trace a premise at ChungYang, New Taipei City, Taiwan by using
AutoCAD. The hardest part of this task is not the drawing is so difficult to trace but id
the luggage and the version is different from what I learnt and what I usually used. It
takes me more time to explore the current version and need time to get used to it.
Using scan files to trace, some problems like the clarity, the orientation, the
arrangement and the completeness of the drawings need to pay more attentions.
Through this task, I aware of the size and type of the nuts will be used, what is the
materials used in Taiwan and how is a complete construction drawings looks like.
The scan files.
AutoCAD drawings.
Other small task like sending permit document to the authority department for
permit application. Went to the wrong address due to wrong message I received from
my architect but I still able to meet the person in charge and complete the task at the
end. Because of this task, I got the opportunity to went into Taipei City Government
Building and aware of how Taiwanese run their system and look at the permit
application process.
Conclusion, the most excited part is I got the chance to learn some keywords
about construction, drawing details, architecture keywords and materials in Chinese.
Compare with the other interns, they might doing technical drawings, 3D modeling,
design spaces or maybe went to site visit which are all related to what we suppose to
learn and tasks written on the log sheets, but I admit that, I have learn a lot of things
that is over what will be learn from a company as an intern. I am not going to blame
or complaining the tasks what i did is not benefice to me at this current stage, but I
really appreciate that I got one step ahead than the other interns about what this
society looking for on design and how to work with business models and design.
Although I can’t really apply these into my following semester works, but I believe all
of these will be helpful in my future career. The most excited part is I got the chance
to learn some keywords about construction, drawing details, architecture keywords
and materials in Chinese.
