Ukai Thermal Power Station(UTPS)
(A unit under G.S.E.C.L.)
3. INTRODUCTION
• Holding Company: Gujarat Uraja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL)
• Generation Company: Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited (GSECL)
• Transmission Company: Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation Limited
(GETCO)
• Distribution Companies:
1. Dakshin Gujarat Vij Company Limited (DGVCL)
2. Uttar Gujarat Vij Company Limited (UGVCL)
3. Madhya Gujarat Vij Company Limited (MGVCL)
4. Paschim Gujarat Vij Company Limited (PGVCL)
4. Ukai Thermal Power Station of the GSECL, is a power station with an installed capacity of 1110 MW.
It is one of Gujarat's major coal-fired power plants, located on the bank of the Tapi river because of
water resources, along with hydroelectric power plant with the same name. It is coal based thermal
power plant so water is essential thing for power generation. There are multiple plants with multiple
capacity of generation.
UKAI THERMAL POWER STATION
Stage Number of unit Installed capacity(MW) Status
Stage I 1 120 Retired from service
Stage II 2 120 Retired from service
Stage III 3 200 Running
Stage IV 4 200 Running
Stage V 5 210 Running
Stage VI 6 500 Running
5. • The coal extracted from
the mines is brought to
the UTPS through train.
The coal is in imported
from Bihar, Jharkhand
(corba) and Maharashtra
by train. In one train there
is 55 to 60 wagon are
there.
COAL HANDLING PLANT
6. • Tippler is motor driven assembly which
unload the train wagon by rotating 180º The
motor used in tippler is of 6.6 kv operated by
operator when tipper hold the wagon.
• After the coal is unloaded form wagon it falls
on Apron feeder. Apron feeder is a
mechanism moving on the shafts and return
Roller. It ca manage flow of stones , powder
like coal.

8. • As the name indicates boiler is use to boil water and turns into steam. There are various types of
boilers based on fuel used in boiler. There is coal fire boiler, oil fire boiler, gas fire boiler etc.
• Boilers are classified in two types:
1. Water tube boiler
2. Fire tube boiler
• Boiler system:
Economizer
Super Heater
Air Pre-Heater
Condenser
BOILER
9. • There are three parts of turbine.
High Pressure Turbine
Intermediate Pressure Turbine
Low Pressure Turbine
TURBINE
A steam turbine is mechanical device that extract thermal energy from pressurize steam and
transforms it into mechanical energy, as the steam turbine generaterotary motion they are suited
for driving electrical generators. The turbine shaft is connected to the generator shaft.
10. • Steam inlet temperature is 540℃ and pressure is
130kg/cm^2.
HIGH PRESSURE TURBINE
• Steam inlet temperature is 540℃ and pressure is
25kg/cm^2.
INTERMIDATE PRESSURE TURBINE
• The steam in LP come from IP turbine with
reduces pressure and temperature and goes to
condenser.
LOW PRESSURE TURBINE
11. GENERATOR
• Turbine shaft is connected with generator shaft hence it rotates the generator. Here in thermal
power station ukai AC synchronous generator(turbo generator) is used which is Water and
hydrogen cooled.
• Here generator is with capacity of 235300KVA in unit 3 & 4. Same as in unit 6 generator
capacity is 588000KVA.
• Speed of both different capacity generator is 3000 RPM with a frequency of 50 Hz. Both are
star-star connected generators.
12. For unit 3&4
• PF: 0.85
• Voltage: 15750 V
• Stator current: 8625 A
• Stator winding connection: 3 phase start-star
• Hydrogen pressure: 3.0kG/cm2
Turbo Genrator
13. For unit 6
• PF: 0.85
• Voltage: 21000 V
• Stator current: 16200 A
• CONNECTION: star-star
• COOLANT: Water and hydrogen
Turbo Genrator (Unit 6)
14. MAIN OUTPUT SYSTEM
• After generation of electricity it is very important export or transmit it to the grid by
switchyard. There for the transformers generating transformers are being used to step up the
voltage.
• There are different types of transformers on basis of ratings and function. Also for stepping up
and stepping down transformer are being used to take power from the switch yard.
• Generator Transformer :
GSECL, UTPS has 6 GTs of different MVA capacity.
Unit produce 15.75kV the generator transformer
steps up from 15.75kv to 220kV. In unit six generator
output is 21kv so generator transformer steps up
voltage from 21kv to 400kv.
15. • Station Transformer :
UTPS has 4 ST of different capacity. The function
of station transformer is in emergency case or
when station has to start the unit station
transformer feed power to the auxiliaries from
switchyard. Station transformer step down
220kV/7kV and makes two bus 6.6KvA and UAT
is generally step 6.6kvB.
HT motors operates on 6.6Kv.
• Unit Auxiliary Transformer :
Step- down transformer. Which step down the
voltage of ST from 6.6Kv to 415V.
LT motors operates on 415V.
16. 220KV SWITCHYARD
• Switchyard is a switching station which is the main link between the generating plant and the
transmission system. It can be considered as the heart of the power plant, the generated power
will only be worthy if it can be transmitted and received by the consumers.
17. • Components of switchyard
Bus bar
Bus coupler
Lightning arrester
Circuit breaker
Isolator
Current transformer
Potential transformer
Wave trap Or Power line
communication Carrier(PLCC)

19. ASH HANDLING PLANT
• Ash plant is very important section in station, Where two types of air collected.
Fly Ash
Bottom Ash
• There are two sides of ash control, fly ash control and bottom ash control. For bottom ash as
well as fly ash SILO system is installed. There is ESP (Electrostatic precipitator). There are
total 3 Nos of SILO, where 2 Nos are for fly ash and 1 Nos for bottom ash.
• The fly Ash is send to the cement and block producers by the truck.
• Bottom Ash is added with water to make the slurry form of Ash. Generally the ratio of water
and bottom Ash is 3:1.
• Bottom Ash is stored in Ash pond which is located near the plant.
