This document discusses internetworking and provides examples using repeaters and bridges to connect local area networks. It describes:
- How repeaters directly transfer bits between connected networks but have limitations in scalability and heterogeneity.
- How bridges selectively forward frames between networks but require homogeneous frame headers and have scalability issues with broadcasts.
- How an internetwork is an arbitrary collection of networks interconnected by routers to provide host-to-host delivery, unlike repeaters and bridges which have transparency and scalability limitations.
