Internet FRAUD
1
“
There is no doubt that the Internet brims
with spamming, scamming and identity
fraud. Having someone wipe out your hard
drive or bank account has never been
easier, and the tools for committing
electronic mischief on your enemies are
cheap and widely accessible.

Let me prove that with datas!
39,2% of all the crimes is Internet Fraud
But what is Internet Fraud
in fact?
Internet fraud is the use of
Internet services or software with
Internet access to defraud victims
or to otherwise take advantage of
them. Internet crime schemes
steal millions of dollars each year
from victims and continue to
plague the Internet through
various methods. According to
ww.scamwatch.gov.au, there are 8
types of it:

There are several ways criminals can
reach you:
▫ E-mail
▫ Social network sites
▫ Other web pages
And these give varied
opportunities for criminals to
scam people. But in the next
slides I would like to
concentrate on the most
common forms of Internet
Fraud.

Phishing
The aim is to trick
people into handing
over their card details
or access to
protected systems.
Emails are sent out
that contain either
links or attachments
that either take you
to a website that
looks like your bank’s,
or installs malware
on your system.
Here is a personal
example
9
A few days ago I received
an e-mail from ‘Google
Incorporation’, but when
I looked at the sender’s
e-mail adress I realised,
that it is certain that it
belongs to a scammer.
The e-mail inside looked
exactly like a real e-mail
from Google; the logo
and the layout made it
credible like this was not
a fraud, but it was.
The letter said:
Dear Google User,
You have been selected as a winner for using Google services. Find attached
email with more details.
Congratulations,
….
This letter was really interesting for me. Firstly, because it showed
me, that the Internet Fraud is a real problem, which can reach even
me and my family. Secondly, I found it striking, that criminals use
more types of Internet Fraud even in one letter to convince people. In
this letter they not just say, you won something, but they do this
under the name of a reliable company.
Identity theft, also known as
identity fraud, is a crime in
which an imposter obtains
key pieces of personally
identifiable information,
such as Social Security or
driver's license numbers, in
order to impersonate
someone else.
Identity theft
The information can be
used to obtain credit,
merchandise and services in
the name of the victim, or to
provide the thief with false
credentials. In addition to
running up debt, in rare
cases, an imposter might
provide false identification
to police, creating a criminal
record or leaving
outstanding arrest warrants
for the person whose
identity has been stolen.

Purchase frauds
Online shopping fraud
Unfortunately, criminals can use
the anonymity of the internet to
rip off unsuspecting buyers and
sellers.
For example, scammers may sell
a product – often at a very cheap
price – just so they can steal your
payment card or personal
information. They may also take
your money and send you a
worthless item, or sometimes,
nothing at all.
Online auction fraud
Online auctions can be rigged by
scammers. If you are selling a
product, the scammer can enter
a low bid followed by a very high
bid under another name. Just
before the auction closes, the
scammer withdraws the high bid
and the low bid wins. If you are
buying a product, the scammer
can boost the price using
dummy bidders.

It’s a fact, that most
deceived people are elderly
There are many reasons for this:
● Being too trusting, and too good
mannered to be rude
● Wanting a better rate of return on
their money
● Believing the salesperson is nice,
friendly and caring
● Being impressed with fancy
credential and titles
This fact causes many issues.
What can be the solution for
them?
www.agingcare.com
The possible solutions:
14
they recognize it
they report it
they don’t believe it
teaching them finding where security softwares
are needed
-Teaching people to
save themselves
-Saving them directly
with security softwares
developing an operative one
making it affordable for
everybody
let it do its job
Here is some
tips and sites
everybody can
use.
15
There are a
lot of usefull
sites on this
topic
Did we find the perfect solution?
Unfortunately, there is no complete solution, but the
situation can be improved. If people will be more carefull and better
educated, and the exerts will developing more and
more security softwares, it will be much more difficult for the criminals to
scam people.
