How she worked her way up the Hach ladder: “I’m motivated by challenge rather
than positional goals. I focus on the challenges presented day by day rather than
focusing on moving up the ranks. Overcoming and succeeding in these challenges are
ultimately what led to promotions.
How she has faced and overcame challenges in the work place being a woman:
“As being one of the only women within my company starting out, I learned early on in
my career that it was difficult to really be heard as a woman. There would be instances
where I would have a great idea, but it wouldn’t be accepted until one of my male
cohorts suggested it instead. Rather than getting upset in situations like this, I asked
myself how I could adjust to these situations and speak up in a way that would make
my coworkers actually listen. I adjusted my tactics of communication after observing my
coworkers so that I could adapt to each individual person. Male or not, it is key to mold
your communication styles with each individual person you are working with.”
Advice to women starting out in the workforce: “Read your audience. Learn how to
interact with individual people rather than forcing your own communication style on
them (regardless of gender). Don’t assume that things happen solely because of your
gender, try to learn how to overcome an obstacle rather than place blame. Also, don’t
be afraid to speak up if you strongly feel you are being mistreated due to your gender.
This is key for us as women to facilitate change in gender equality. Don’t be afraid to
rock the boat if it means standing up for yourself.”

from a personal philosophy of constant learning and seeking challenges. Thankfully,
at Hach and Danaher I have been provided the opportunity to move between teams

ability to be a better and more well-rounded business leader. I worry less about
moving up on the org chart and more about moving up the learning curve.”
How she faced and overcame challenges in the work place being a woman: “I
have built my career by being myself, challenging the status quo, and achieving
results. I was raised to have an extremely strong work ethic and drive for success.
Where I have been challenged as a women in my career is where I have interacted
with others, men and women, that have the bias that women are supposed to be less
aggressive. I didn’t react well to the pressure or coaching to be less like me. I
became less than my best self. I held back meaningful input that could have helped
the business. The more I have researched the challenges facing women in the
workforce as well as had the opportunity to mentor other women, I now realize that
many face this challenge. I have overcome this challenge by building my self-
awareness on how to be myself but also be aware and adjust as needed based of
how others are receiving my message.”
Advice to women starting out in the workforce: “Build a network of peers,
mentors, and coaches and be a constant learner of what it takes to be successful.
Some of those lessons are only learned by observing, listening, and reflecting
yourself and others in your network. When you receive feedback from others, treat it
like trying on clothes. Try on the feedback, but also feel free to leave some of the
feedback in the dressing room when it doesn’t fit.

maximizing mentorship opportunities; being mentored and mentoring as well. I have

natural tendency to force and embrace change has been an asset in my career. I
consistently challenge norms and reinvent myself as needed to work smarter which
has opened doors over my time here at Hach.”
How she faced and overcame challenges in the work place being a woman:
“I can’t say that selling in a male dominated industry hasn’t produced its own set of
challenges. At times, I had to work harder to gain credibility in certain circles. I met
these obstacles head-on by believing in my abilities and having confidence that I
could help my customers accomplish their goals. I will say though, my philosophy is
the same regardless; do what you say you are going to do. By being diligent and a
consistent customer advocate, I feel the credibility and success are obtained
organically.”
Advice to women starting out in the workforce: “First and foremost, be your true
and unique self. Early in my career, I would find myself wanting to change to fit
situations vs. leaning in to what I brought to the table that no one else did. Each of
us brings something unique so own that. Second, don’t try to do it all alone! Its
important to build a network of friends, peers and mentors that round out your skill
set so you can explore who you want to be in your career as well as personally. “

How she worked her way up the Hach ladder: Prior to Hach I worked as process
engineer and in chemical purchasing, technical support and applications
development. I started at Hach leading the Applications team for Lachat. I was
then promoted to the Program Manager for lab BU when R&D was part of the BU.
After that, I lead the project managers in the new combined R&D team. During that
time, I also got my PMI certification. I then lead a Growth breakthrough project
team and the FAST team. I was then promoted to site leader for Loveland for
R&D. Key elements that supported my growth were getting a broad experience so I
could understand multiple perspectives across the business, finding an opportunity
to learn and grow with every role, having some key mentors, and taking on stretch
challenges.
How she faced and overcame challenges in the work place being a woman:
Not being heard in meetings, had expectations about what women should do
versus men in their roles. ? I learned to increase my presence in discussions. In
the roles situation, it was cultural in the organization so I left the team and found
another position that was more supportive.
Advice to women starting out in the workforce: Build a support network, have
confidence in yourself and your abilities and persevere. Talk on challenges to
stretch yourself.
