I’ve lectured on green building the past 25 years. Following a lecture in
2000, I became known as the Green Lady. I didn’t find that very flattering.
At that same time, a famous US comedienne, Roseanne Barr,
referred to herself as a “Domestic Goddess”.
If Roseanne could be a goddess, so could I.
I decided back then to go by the nick name
              Green Goddess
      (Apologies to the salad dressing.)
I am a third generation interior designer
My career took a turn when I was hired to be
an Interior Space Architect in Saudi Arabia.
My parents were young adults
during the Great Depression.
They never outgrew the habit to

CONSERVE, REUSE, MINIMIZE WASTE.

These are values I carried into my
personal life and my career.
Systems Furniture Panel Project 1980

 Management asked me to dispose of 300 old
systems furniture panels & purchase new

 The steel frames were structurally sound

 I suggested we resurfaced with new panel fabric

                Saved $250K in replacement, 1980 dollars

 Saved tons of material going into the land fill
Hired in 1991 to design 12 buildings for the new national laboratory.
•One of the first truly green buildings in USA

•Opened in 1993, the year the USGBC was founded

•Opened the year before the LEED system premiered

•NREL staff involved in the creation of LEED

•SERF saved $250,000 first year in energy costs
•Awarded a National Endowment for the Arts

•Dedicated by Vice President Al Gore
I worked 18 months helping establish the Panama Green Building Council
•LEED is a globally recognized certification system for determining if
 a building is legitimately green.

•There are seven categories in which you can earn points.

•Depending on the number of points determines which of the four levels of
LEED certification you can strive for; Platinum, Gold, Silver or Certified.
 Water Efficiency

 Energy & Atmosphere

 Materials and Resources

 Indoor Environmental Quality

 Innovation & Design

 Regional Priority
LEED certifies buildings, not products. To determine if a product
contributes toward LEED credits, look for SCS Certification.

 SCS certifies for:
                Indoor Air Quality
                Recycled Content
                FSC Chain of Custody

 Examples of SCS certified products: Carpet, molding, doors, drywall,
office and systems furniture, pest control, paints, insulation, and
    cleaning products.
 It can be as simple as giving furniture a
new life with paint or fabric.

           Before After
 Fabrics
 Carpeting
 Furniture Components
 Ceiling Tiles
 Flooring
 Wall Panels
 Wood
Post-Industrial Recycled Materials: (PI) refer to content
produced from industrial or manufacturing waste, such
as scrap materials that were not used in the original
  production process.

Post-Consumer Recycled Materials: (PC) are made from
products that have served their intended uses and have
  been collected for recycling.
 Contribute to LEED MR Credit for
                 Recycled Content

 Contribute to LEED IEQ Credit for
                 Low Emitting Materials

Content: Post-Industrial Recycled Polyester
         Post-Consumer Recycled Polyester

Recycled fibers are stronger than virgin fibers
Recycled Content Example

Total recycled content (by weight) 17.8 %
Pre-consumer 7.9 %
Post-consumer 9.9 %
Packaging 100% recyclable
MR 4.1 / 4.2
“Recycled Content, 10%…”
“Recycled Content, 20%…”

A typical Choices® fabric-covered panel has:

3% post-consumer (PC) recycled content by weight
48.5% post-industrial (PI) recycled content by weight.
Combined PC + PI = 51.5% by weight.
MINERAL FIBER

 High % of Recycled Content

 100% Recyclable
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international
not for-profit organization.

Established in 1993 to promote responsible management of the world’s forests.

    Sets Standards
    Independent Certification
    Labels Forest Products

Wood from Lake Bayano qualifies for an unbelievable 5 LEED points.
Cali Bamboo

BamDeck is a composite material:

 100% recycled content
 30% recycled bamboo fibers
 70% recycled plastics
 Twice as dense & strong as the leading competitors
     which are 100% recycled plastic
 Low or No VOC Materials
 Zero Formaldehyde Furniture & Flooring
 Mold Resistant Materials
 Mold Killing Devices
 Flammability
Volatile Organic Compounds
AirGuard™

 No Added Formaldehyde Products

 The first coating for ceiling tiles that actively removes formaldehyde and
    other aldehydes in indoor air

 30 Year Performance Guarantee
SHEETROCK Mold Tough Gypsum Panels:

 Noncombustible, moisture resistant gypsum core

 Encased in moisture- and mold-resistant, 100-percent
recycled green face and brown back paper.

 Available in regular and FIRECODE® core formulations.

 In independent lab tests per ASTM D3273, the panels
    achieved a score of 10.
NFPA 260

                                   California Bulletin #117

 Motion Sensor Controls
LED lights dramatically save
energy while providing excellent
light quality and color.
Extensive use of 3 watt LED bulbs.
Union Fenosa thought our client had disconnected the meter.
They didn’t believe the electrical demand could be so low.
We were able to educate them on the benefits of LED bulbs.
Inverter technology saves energy & money by eliminating spikes in power usage.

 Uses up to 77 % less energy
 Compared to washers from just a few years ago.
Evaluate, evaluate, evaluate!

Something may cost more
in the beginning,
but it could end up saving
time, money and resources
in the long run.
Abrasion: 30,000-1 Million Double-Rubs

                  A high double-rub number
insures that a fabric is going to
look like new for many years.

Double-rub count refers to the durability of a type of fabric. The double-rub
testing method uses a special machine that passes a testing pad back and
forth over the fabric until it is worn out. Each back and forth pass is known as
a double-rub.
LEED Certification isn’t for everyone!

The important thing is to implement as
  many features as possible.
