Challenging Tasks with Fractions
A message from Ms. N: We’ve done a lot of thinking about fractions, but we aren’t finished yet!
Below you will find some challenging fraction problems. Believe it or not, you actually know enough
about fractions to solve all of these problems. So, use what you know. Use your awesome reasoning
skills. Do whatever it takes to figure out the answers. One rule – don’t ask for help =)
1. Avery and Megan are cutting paper to make origami stars. They need one-fifth of a sheet of paper in
order to make each star. If they have 6 sheets of paper, how many stars can they make? Explain your
work and draw a picture to support your reasoning.
2. Four friends have ordered big, big blueberry pancakes at Bob’s Breakfast Place. The waiter brings 3
big, big blueberry pancakes to their table. If the friends share the pancakes equally, how much will
each person get? (I suggest drawing a picture)
3. A package contains 4 cups of oatmeal. There is 1/3 cup of oatmeal in each serving. How many
servings of oatmeal are in the package? Use a picture to prove your answer.
4. Mrs. Smith had ½ of a pumpkin pie left over. She split the leftover pie evenly between her 3
children. What fraction of the pie did each child get? Draw a picture to prove it.
5. There are 3 pizzas. Each child will get 1/4 of a pizza. How many children will get pizza if they’re
going to eat all 3 pizzas? Draw a picture to show your thinking.
