Professional Development Goals click here to view as a MS word file To page 2 Professional Growth Objective Rational Year One Plan Three year Plan Curriculum Prepare for upcoming changes in the AP Biology curriculum and AP Exam effective for the 2012-13 academic year To effectively deliver the AP program and ensure students success in the AP class Review changes as they become available Gather resources to support and implement changes Integrate new activities and labs into the course gradually over the coming 3 years Communicate with other AP biology teachers about best practices Attend an AP training course offered by the College Board Curriculum Increase knowledge and understanding of Human Geography My education has been focused around physical geography and I would like to strengthen this aspect of my personal knowledge Read current literature on human geography, journals, textbooks, and websites Begin teaching an introductory geography class Attend workshops and gather resources relating to the instruction of human geography Curriculum Diversify my teaching experience by teaching new classes To become a more versatile member of the school community, learn new instructional methods, and make myself more marketable in the future.  Teach one new course, preferably an introductory science or geography class Teach at least one geography class Teach at least one environmental science course Instructional Strategies Expand my knowledge of different learning abilities and styles To reach every student in my class effectively and ensure that all abilities are challenged and have opportunities of success Consult with colleagues to learn more about strategies to reach all learning abilities Read current research and available resources on learning abilities. Create learning activities for different learning abilities Collect student reflections on these activities  Instructional Strategies Develop interdisciplinary lessons To help students better understand the interactions between science and other disciplines Work with the psychology teacher to develop and implement an interdisciplinary lesson with my grade 10 class Share our findings with the school Create and implement a series of cross-curricular activities and share these with other teachers
Professional Development Goals To page 1 Instructional Strategies Continue to incorporate student centered and group learning activities as well as exploration/inquiry based learning into the science curriculum Research shows that many high school students are more engaged in learning when in peer groups and activities are hands-on Deliver a presentation on a collaborative learning activity at a professional development workshop, collect feedback and solicit new activities Modify two (2) of my current laboratory activates making them inquiry based Continue placing emphases on student directed learning and reduce teacher directed instruction to 25% of class time Modify the majority of laboratory activities to inquiry based Assessment Diversify my assessment strategies To gain a better understanding of what students are learning and what barriers exist to their learning Develop and implement performance based assessment rubrics Try three (3) new assessment tools Continue to use many assessment tools Reflect on successes and failures and share with other teachers Technology Integrate technology into the classroom regularly To ensure that students are capable of using the most current technology and are able to gain the benefits they offer Use one new piece of scientific laboratory equipment with the AP class Make use of the computer lab to search powerful scientific data bases Assign a webquest assignment to the grade 10 class Stay current with the latest educational technology and ensure students have access to this technology Explore at least one new technological tool each semester Technology Use wiki pages with all my classes I have had success using wiki pages over the past two years with my AP students and would like to expand this Begin an online science dictionary with my introductory biology class Add additional pages to the wiki where students can collaborate and share ideas Environmental Education   Promote environmental stewardship within the school community To develop a social responsible student body and create a global awareness and responsibility for the health of our planetary systems Help students create their own environment group Continue the work of the recycling club and energy alliance Attend workshops and take courses on integrating environment education into the current education system Create clubs and activities to engage students with environmental issues Continuing Education Take courses toward gaining certification in Nova Scotia To remain current regarding changes and trends in pedagogy and because I will one day return to Nova Scotia to teach Take a course during the summer that will directly assist with my current course load Take courses over summer and other school breaks.
