This document describes a proposed intelligent trolley system for shopping malls using IoT technologies. The system uses barcode scanners placed on shopping trolleys to automatically scan product barcodes as items are added to the trolley. It then displays the item names, prices, and running total on an LCD screen on the trolley. Wireless communication technologies send the purchase data to a central server and allow mall owners to monitor sales remotely. The goals are to reduce checkout wait times for customers, lower labor costs for stores, and provide real-time business insights for owners.
Nowadays purchasing and shopping at big malls is becoming a daily activity in metro cities. There will be huge rush at malls on holidays and weekends. The rush is even more when there are special offers and discount. People purchase different items and put them in trolley. After total purchase one needs to go to billing counter for payments. At the billing counter the cashier prepare the bill using bar code reader which is a time consuming process and results in long queues at billing counters. Our aim is to develop a system that can be used in shopping malls to solve the above mentioned challenge. The system will be placed in all the trolleys. It consists RFID reader, Zigbee, display. All the products in the mall will be equipped with RFID tags. When a person places any product in the trolley, the respective tag of the product is detected and the price of that product is stored in the memory. Item name and its cost will be displayed on LCD. As a person places more products, the cost of the products is added to the total bill. Thus the billing is done in the trolley itself. At the billing Counter the total bill data will be transferred to PC by wireless RF modules.

Database System in Automatic Billing for Supermarketijtsrd
Now-a-day shopping in city-mark and mall is increasing rapidly. While shopping, customers have to face some difficulties. First, they go at the billing counter for payments their total expenditure but there are many people standing in queue for billing purpose. This is unnecessary waste time for customer because cashier scans each item bought with barcode. Barcode technology is time consuming process. Second, customer can't predict their total expenditure so overall purchase total is greater than their budget. Thus, the system overcomes all of these drawbacks faced by customers in shopping malls. This system has been introduced to avoid waiting in billing queue. The system consists of a RFID reader, Arduino Uno, LCD display and wireless Zigbee transmitter in the customer site and software programming language is Arduino IDE. At the counter computer, Zigbee receiver is connected to billing PC using serial communication. Visual Basic 6.0 is used for Graphical User Interface GUI to get display customer bill and Microsoft Access database system is used to know about details of purchasing products on the counter computer. Smart Integrated Trolley for Future Super Marketsijtsrd
Among the various sectors that contribute to the economic growth of a country, the service sector, especially the retail sector, plays an important role. In that sense, the retail sector especially in supermarkets, in India is growing very fast. However, there is a problem in getting qualified labours for the development of the sector. Thus, this creates a situation where supermarkets lose their customers and their profits. Although various innovations have been implemented in the supermarkets to address these issues, it does not seem to be sufficiently satisfactory. Smart Integrated Trolley for Future Super Markets is recommended here to address these shortcomings. In this system, the control unit is integrated with the entrance unit, trolley unit, and check out unit. Trolley will smartly receive the payment for the items selected by the customer and give the receipt. The customer can also ask about his doubts and queries through a wireless two way communication device in the trolley. Using this system enables better service to customers and also helps to reduce the number of labours. And there is no doubt that supermarkets operating in more than one shift mode will increase the quality of their service and their profit margin when they use this system. A product having societal acceptance is the one that helps comfort, provides efficiency and convenience in everyday life. Big shopping complexes are being developed in metro cities. Huge rush can be seen at these malls on holidays and weekends. People wanting to purchase products have to carry them in the trolleys. After finishing choosing the products, one proceeds to go to billing counter. At billing counter bill is generated by scanning the products manually using a hand assisted barcode scanner. This takes a lot of time resulting in a long queue for billing. In this project, we discuss a system which is being developed to aid a person in day to day shopping in terms of reduced time spent while purchasing. The main objective of proposed system is to provide a technology oriented approach which is pocket friendly, scalable and rugged system for assisting shopping. INTELLIGENT TROLLEY FOR SHOPPING MALL USING IOT
INTRODUCTION
In the modern world, every supermarket and hypermarkets employ shopping baskets and
shopping trolleys in order to aid customers to select and store the products which they intend to
purchase. The customers have to drop every product which they wish to purchase into the
shopping cart and then proceed to checkout at the billing counter. The billing process is quite
tedious and highly time consuming and has created the need for shops to employ more and more
human resource in the billing section, and yet waiting time remains considerably high. In this
paper, we seem it fit to propose the “Intelligent Shopping Basket” which aims to reduce ,and
possibly eliminate the total waiting time of customers, lower the total manpower requirement and
expenses for markets and increase efficiency overall. In a world where technology is replacing
the ways we pursue everyday activity, the future of the retail industry also lies in more and more
automated devices.
Now a day’s shopping at big malls is a daily activity in metro cities. One can see huge rush at
malls on holidays and on special discounts days. People purchase different items and put them in
trolley & go to billing counter for payments. At the billing counter the cashier prepare the bill
using bar code reader. Aim of this task is to develop a system that can be used solve the above
mentioned challenge. The system with BARCODE will be placed in all the trolleys. All the
products in the mall will be equipped with BAECODE . When a person puts any products in the
trolley, its code will be detected and the price of those products will be stored in memory, its
name and cost will be displayed on LCD and will be sent to billing Counter by wireless modules.
Also this whole information will be send through Ethernet module to internet. Also we use GSM
method which is helpful to owner.

LITERATURE SURVEY
Shopping mall is a place where people get their daily necessities ranging from food products,
clothing, electrical appliances etc. Sometimes customers have problems regarding the incomplete
information about the product on sale and waste of unnecessary time at the billing counters.
Continuous improvement is required in the traditional billing system to improve the quality of
shopping experience to the customers [3].Now day’s numbers of large as well as small shopping
malls has increased throughout the global due to increasing public demand & spending. At the
time of festivals, special discounts, holidays, etc. there is a huge rush in shopping malls. The use
barcode reading technique in such situations always results in waste time since customer has to
wait till whole items get scanned. These advantages can be avoided by using IOT based
intelligent trolley proposed in this paper [1]. This system uses BARCODE technique instead of
barcode. Proposed system uses separate BARCODE reader for each trolley and BARCODE for
each product. When customer buys any product BARCODE reader reads the tag which is present
on the product. The cost of product and the total bill of shopping items can be displayed on 16*2
LCD. IoT based intelligent trolley presented here is easy to use and does not requires the special
training to customers. BARCODE technique has many advantages over barcode systems.
BARCODE reader reads the tag from a distance of 300 feet whereas barcode can read the
information at distance not greater than 15 feet. Also the barcode need one site of propagation.
Reading frequency of barcode reads is only two tags whereas reading frequency of BARCODE .
So the use of BARCODE is more useful than traditional barcode reading technique. Here use of
BARCODE is helpful for customer. Then what about owner? As each one of us is aware that
single owner can have ownership of more than 2or3 malls or in each mall many sections are
available, then how someone make control over it. Solution to above mentioned challenge is the
use of GSM module. It will reduce the required hardware and also gives the real time
information about commercial activity in all malls from any location. At the time of festival or
special offers there is huge rush in mall. Customers waste their lots of time at the billing counter.
To overcome this disadvantage the technique develop is based on BARCODE. In IOT based
trolley for shopping mall customer done automatic billing. And this is helpful for economic and
efficient shopping. Also by using the concept of IOT this technique is helpful to owner also.
Owner can observe real time business done in shopping mall from any place.Using this system,
3. INTELLIGENT TROLLEY FOR SHOPPING MALL USING IOT 2018
Dept. E&CE, SVCE Page 3
customer will have the information about price of every item that are scanned in, total price of
the item and also brief about the product. So use of this IOT based intelligent trolley for
shopping malls is helpful for customer as well as owners [6].
GalandeJayshree, RutujaGholap, Preeti Yadav in the year 2014 proposed BARCODE Based
Automatic Billing Trolley. This paper proposed a system that will be placed in all the trolleys. It
will consist of a BARCODE reader. All the products in the mall will be equipped with
BARCODE . When a person puts any products in the trolley, its code will be detected and the
price of those products will be stored in memory. As we put the products, the costs will get
added to total bill. Thus the billing will be done in the trolley itself. Item name and its cost will
be displayed on LCD. Also the products name and its cost can be announced using headset. At
the billing counter the total bill data will be transferred to PC by wireless RF modules. Several
previous studies have also discussed the development of marketing applications, including the
study entitled “Design of EMarketing at PT. RajawaliNusindo” [6] and “Design of Web-based
Marketing Information Systems at BMT (BaitulMaalWattamwil) Cita Sejahtera” [7]. The
purpose of this system is a media campaign for the company. This system other than as a
promotional media can also process ordering goods, ordering transaction processing, and display
the status of the goods, as well as providing reports the purchase of a product level. However,
there are still shortcomings in the system, especially in terms of marketing, which is a form of
promotion that is carried out is limited to display only items available. There is no specific
approach to attract potential buyers to purchase the product supplied. Limited mobility and lack
of customer personalization.
OBJECTIVE
The main objective of this project is to reduce and eliminate time taken in billing counter in
super markets by designing an Intelligent Shopping Basket which uses BARCODE scanners to
allow users to self-checkout and increase productivity time.

METHODOLOGY
The Automated Shopping cart system integrates a Shopping cart (trolley) with 2 sets of barcode
scanners placed at 2 different checkpoints – the entry and exit points respectively. It facilitates
the user to self-scan the barcode of the purchased products which he intends to purchase.
Wrongful entries can be corrected by making use of a keypad that changes the functionality of
the machine from addition of products to removal of products and activates the other barcode
scanner at the opposite end.
A wireless smart-device makes note of all the scanned commodities of the particular trolley (with
allotment number) ; and is linked with the Supermarket's backend database which contains
details of the products such as Cost Price,
Available Stock. The scanned products are automatically billed in the wireless smart device for
their purchases, thereby significantly reducing turnaround time and reducing and transmitted to
the Shop's central Billing program. By this mechanism, the time consuming work of scanning
and billing every single product at the cash counter can be avoided. Users can then make use of
the counter to pack and pay labour time which has become a real problem in the modern era.
The tray in which the two barcode scanners are embedded is fitted with a lock and keys for
which are with the people at the billing section. This allows users to take out all their products
and place them into carry bags during the checkout process.

Arduino
For this project, we use a very easy to use microcontroller called Arduino. Arduino is an open
source project based the programming language is a variant of C which is straight forward, and
the system library is very rich. With little fuss you will be able to learn a great deal about how
microcontrollers work and how to program them.(The actual microprocessor chip the Arduino
uses is made by Atmel, which is based in San Jose, California.) Below is an enlarged photograph
of the Arduino microcontroller module (technically the Uno R3 module) Arduino has 14
input/output pins on one side (labeled 0 through 13) and 6 input/output pins on the other (labeled
A0 through A5). It is these pins that allow external information flow in and out of the
microcontroller. In this lab, you will primarily be concerned with these input/output pins. The six
pins labeled A0 through A5 have the analog to digital conversion (ADC) capability. This means
that you can measure an analog voltage (between 0 and 5V) on these pins to a certain degree of
precision. In the case of the Arduino, the precision is 5/1023 or about 5 mV.
LCD Display
Each pixel of an LCD typically consists of a layer of molecules aligned between two transparent
electrodes, and two polarizing filters (parallel and perpendicular), the axes of transmission of
which are (in most of the cases) perpendicular to each other. Without the liquid crystal between
the polarizing filters, the second (crossed) polarizer would block light passing through the first
filter. Before an electric field is applied, the orientation of the liquid-crystal molecules is
determined by the alignment at the surfaces of electrodes. In a twisted nematic (TN) device, the
surface alignment directions at the two electrodes are perpendicular to each other, and so the
8. INTELLIGENT TROLLEY FOR SHOPPING MALL USING IOT 2018
Dept. E&CE, SVCE Page 8
molecules arrange themselves in a helical structure, or twist. This induces the rotation of the
polarization of the incident light, and the device appears gray. If the applied voltage is large
enough, the liquid crystal molecules in the center of the layer are almost completely untwisted
and the polarization of the incident light is not rotated as it passes through the liquid crystal
layer.
SMS Alerts & Incentives
Nearly 70 percent of mobile subscribers want more SMS alerts for appointment reminders,
bill payments, and customer service text call-back requests .Alerts can be stored in the phone for
future reference, and since the phone is always with a customer, it is much more convenient than
direct mail or even email. Mobile barcode can automate the opt-in process for Alerts by filling in
the short code and message automatically on the Customer’s phone. The Customer chooses
to opt-in to the alerts by sending the pre-filled in message.
Barcode scanner
Barcode scanner is an electronic device that can read printed barcodes to a computer. Like a
flatbed scanner, it consists of a light source, a lens, and light sensor translating optical impulses
into electrical ones. Additionally nearly all barcode readers contain decoder circuit analyzing the
barcode’s image data provided by the sensor and sending the barcode’s content to the scanner’s
output port.
Early barcode scanners, of all formats, almost universally used the then-common RS-232 serial
interface. This was an electrically simple means of connection and the software to access it is
relatively simple, although needing to be written for specific computers and their serial ports.
