3. Rondalla Music
The Rondalla is performed on ensembles comprising
mandolin instruments of various sizes called bandurria.
The word rondalla came from Spanish word, ronda, meaning
“serenade.”
4. Brass Band
Filipinos love fiestas. The word fiesta will surely bring a smile
to the face of almost any Filipino.
Fiesta is never complete without band music. This usually
performed by brass bands. A brass band is a musical
ensemble, generally consisting entirely of brass and
percussion instruments, marching and playing on the streets.
5. Musikong Bumbong
The musikong bumbong , also called the bamboo music, play
piccolos, tubas, clarinets, flutes, and saxophones that are
crafted from bamboo. It is known that the band members are
the ones who craft their own instruments.
The first bamboo band in the Philippines was formed 1896. it
was a time of ferment and revolution. The band was
composed of freedom fighters that performed patriotic pieces
during meetings of the Katipunan revolutionary.
6. Bamboo Organ
The Las Piñas Bamboo Organ is a 19th century church organ
with unique organ pipes. It is a musical instrument that is
almost entirely made of bamboo.
The bamboo organ is known as the first pipe organ in the
world. It was built by Fr. Diego Cera dela Virgen del Carmen
during the years between 1817 and 1824.
7. Angklung Ensemble
Angklung is a popular bamboo musical instrument that
originated from Indonesia. This can be played by simply
shaking it. It is usually made of two to four bamboo tubes
attached to a bamboo frame.
The tubes are carved to have a resonant pitch when struck
and are tuned to octaves.
8. Pangkat Kawayan
The “Pangkat Kawayan” (literally ‘Bamboo Band’), otherwise
known as the “Singing Bamboos of the Philippines,” is a
unique orchestra that draws music from unconventional
bamboo instruments.
