HARDWARE
DEVICES
(Input and Output Devices)
HARDWARE
refers to the physical parts of a
computer and related devices.
is every physical piece that
makes up your computer.
PERIPHERAL DEVICES
are the parts of the computer
that are not absolutely
needed for the computer to
work.
Types of Hardware Devices
Input Devices
and Output Devices
Input Devices
An input device lets you communicate with
a computer. Input devices are used to
enter information and issues commands
Examples of Input Devices
keyboard, mouse, joystick,
touchscreen, scanner, digital camera,
microphone, web camera etc.
Two Types of Input Devices
A. Keyboard Entry
B. Direct Entry
A. Keyboard Entry
Data is inputted to the computer
through a keyboard
Keyboard
• The first input device developed for PC
• Data is transferred to the PC over a short
cable with a circular 6-pin Mini-din connector
that plugs into the back of the motherboard
B. Direct Entry
These devices create machine-
readable data on paper, or magnetic
media, or feed it directly into the
computer’s CPU
1. Pointing Devices
An input device used to move the
pointer (cursor) on screen
1.1 Mouse
• The most common
‘pointing device’ used in
PCs. Every mouse has
two buttons and most
have one or two scroll
wheels.
1.2 Touch Screen
• A display screen that is
sensitive to the touch of a
finger or stylus. Used in
myriad applications,
including ATM, POS
terminals etc. The touch
screen became wildly
popular for smartphones
and tablets
1.3 Light Pen
• A light-sensitive wired to a
video terminal used to draw
or select menu options. The
user brings the pen to the
desired point on screen and
presses the pen button to
make contact
1.4 Digitizer Tablet
• A graphic drawing tablet
used for sketching new
images or tracing old ones.
Also called a “graphic
tablet,” the user contact the
surface of the device with a
wired or wireless pen.
2. Scanner
• Used to put printed pictures and text into a
computer.
Hand-held scanner Flatbed scanner
Sheet-fed scanner
Voice-Input Devices
• Used to record sound or
audio file then save in the
computer
Output Devices
An output device is any piece of computer
hardware that displays result after the
computer has processed the input data
that has been entered
Examples of Output Devices
Monitors, smartboard, projector,
printer, speakers
1. Computer Display Monitor
Types of Monitor:
a. CRT – Cathode Ray Tube
b. LCD – Liquid Crystal Display
c. LED – Light Emitting Diode
It displays information in visual form, using text
and graphics. The portion of the monitor that
displays the information is called the screen or
video display terminal.
1. Computer Display Monitor
A. CRT Monitors – Cathode Ray Tube
(CRT) were the only type of display for use
with desktop PCs. They are relatively big
(14” to 16” deep) and heavy )over 15 lbs).
1. Computer Display Monitor
B. LCD Monitors – Liquid Crystal Display
(LCD) technology has been used in laptops
for sometime. It has recently been made
commercially available as monitors for
desktop PCs.
1. Computer Display Monitor
C. LED Monitors (Light Emitting Diode) – A
display and lightning technology used on
almost every electrical and electronic
product on the market, from a tiny on/off
light to digital readouts, flashlights, traffic
lights etc.
2. DLP Projector
• Use to display video,
images or computer data
on a screen or other flat
surface
3. Smart Board
• A type of display screen
that has a touch sensitive
transparent panel
covering the screen,
which is similar to touch
screen
4. Printer
• produces a representation
of an electronic document
on physical media such
as paper or transparency
film.
• Produce a hard copy
(also called printout).
4. Printer
Types of Printer
Speaker
• Used to output sounds from the
computer
Summary:
Hardware devices are the physical and
tangible parts of the computer system. It is
categorize into two types, first is the input
devices used for entering data/information
in the computer system and the output
devices used for displaying or producing
processed data/information.
