This document provides instructions for a virtual Innovation Academy program hosted by the Westerville Public Library due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It outlines 3 challenges for participants to complete at home - defining augmented and virtual reality, exploring augmented reality apps, and creating a virtual reality tour using Google's Tour Creator tool. Participants are encouraged to share what they create by email. Library programs at home? How does that work?
Every virtual library program looks a little different. In person, Innovation Academy involves
hands-on exploration of technology, art supplies, and more. Virtually, we are going to learn
about concepts that can be explored with technology you might already have at home.
Cool—But what do I do first?
For the May 2020 Innovation Academy program, you will be presented with a series of
challenges to help you work through the material:
CHALLENGE 1: Define “Augmented Reality” and “Virtual Reality.”
Use the provided tools—and the Internet!—to discover the differences between
Augmented and Virtual Reality. Read this packet, watch the suggested videos, and do
your own research.
CHALLENGE 2: Explore Augmented Reality at home.
Download a few Augmented Reality apps. How are the apps different? How are they
alike? Which require outside tools—like worksheets or books—to operate? What kind of app
is your favorite?
CHALLENGE 3: Create a Virtual Reality tour.
Ideal for older participants or as part of a family project, create your own Virtual Reality tour
using Google’s free Tour Creator.
BONUS CHALLENGE: Share!

Virtual reality is fully immersive. You put on a headset and only see and
experience a completely virtual world.
Augmented reality is a mix of real and virtual. You use a smartphone or tablet
to layer virtual elements on top of your view of the real world around you.
Virtual Reality Augmented Reality
• Creates an entire virtual world
• Hard to tell what is real and not real
• More immersive
• Requires headset ($$$$)
Example: scuba diving
• Mix of real and virtual world
• Lets people interact with both worlds and
clearly distinguish between real and fake

Get a glimpse into the capabilities of AR by selecting from three characters, coloring
them any way you like, and bringing them to life for some cool photo ops.
Quiver—3D Coloring App by QuiverVision Limited
Print coloring pages from quivervision.com. Color with around the house tools, such
as crayons. Bring your pictures to life with the “Butterfly” button in the Quiver app.
AR Dragon by Playside (or Talking Pet)
Adopt a virtual dragon pet. Feed, train, and play with your new, adorable friend.
Requires waiting between select activities to not have to pay or watch ads.
Angry Birds AR: Isle of Pigs by Rovio Entertainment Corporation
Bring your Angry Birds expertise into the real world. Point your phone at a flat surface
to bring a paradise to life in your room—which you work to destroy with flying birds.
CyberChase Shape Quest! by PBS KIDS
Print out a board game from pbskids.org/apps/cyberchase-shape-quest.html. Bring
the game to life with your phone to catch critters and build spatial memory skills.
Pokémon GO by Niantic, Inc.
Discover virtual Pokémon in the world around you. Complete missions, battle other
players, take care of your Pokémon buddy, and more. Requires an account.
Civilisations AR by BBC Media Applications
Explore over 40 artifacts from around the world through close-up observation, X-Ray
views inside of cases, and written and audio stories about times in history.
iOS has many amazing AR apps only available on Apple products. Own an Apple device?

5. Virtual Reality Tour

Create a Virtual Reality Tour.
While you may not have a VR headset at home, you can still create some
pretty cool 360° virtual tours that you can share with your friends using the free
Google Tour Creator tool: https://arvr.google.com/tourcreator

6. Virtual Reality Tour

1. Go to arvr.google.com/tourcreator and select “Get Started.”
2. Select “New Tour.”
3. Create a theme for your tour. Do you want to showcase your favorite places? World
landmarks? Zoos? Use your chosen theme to:
• Give your tour a title.
• Write a description.
• Add a cover photo.
Make sure to think about your personal safety. Picking world locations might be
better than a map featuring your house and your friend’s house. Talk to a grown-up
for more ideas.
4. When your description is complete, select “Create.”
5. Add your first scene. Search for a location in the search bar to the left of the new screen.
Some places will have photos—other places will not. Once you find a location with a
photo, you can click and drag on the photo to turn it around. Sometime a building or
landmark might be facing a different direction. Some popular locations have more than
one picture. If available, click on the yellow “person” on the map to the left and move
them around to access a different photo. When ready, select “Add Scene” in the
bottom right.
6. Add a title, description and more to your scene. Add points of interest to add
descriptions to specific parts of your image.
7. On the bottom toolbar, select “add scene” to add additional scenes.
8. When completed, select “Publish” near the top right. Decide if you want to make your
map Public or Unlisted:
• Public: Anyone on the Internet can find your map.
• Unlisted: Only people with a link can find your map.
9. Click on the provided link to view your map. Share it with others! If you have a VR
device, you can view your map in virtual reality using the Google Expeditions or Google
Maps apps.
