This document discusses common injuries among female field hockey players and strategies for prevention. The most common injuries are to the lower limbs (ankle sprains and muscle strains), head/face (concussions and impact traumas), and lower back pain. Prevention strategies include ankle taping, balance training, protective gear, rule changes to reduce collisions, flexibility and strength training, and proper warm-up/cool-down techniques. Coaches are encouraged to be aware of injury patterns and risks in order to implement prevention strategies.

Auditing search engines for differential satisfaction across demographicsAmit Sharma
Many online services, such as search engines, social media platforms, and digital marketplaces, are advertised as being available to any user, regardless of their age, gender, or other demographic factors. However, there are growing concerns that these services may systematically underserve some groups of users. In this work, we present a framework for internally auditing such services for differences in user satisfaction across demographic groups, using search engines as a case study. We first explain the pitfalls of naively comparing the behavioral metrics that are commonly used to evaluate search engines. We then propose three methods for measuring latent differences in user satisfaction from observed differences in evaluation metrics. To develop these methods, we drew on ideas from the causal inference and multilevel modeling literature. Our framework is broadly applicable to other online services, and provides general insight into interpreting their evaluation metrics.
Whiplash describes a range of injuries to the neck caused by or related to a sudden distortion of the neck. The typical clinical picture in whiplash injury is that following the injury there is no obvious immediate pain.

Patient Information:
JO, 46-year-old female, African American
S.
CC: Pain in both ankles, but more concerned about her right ankle.
HPI: The patient is a 46-year-old African American female who presents to the clinic with complaint of bilateral ankle pain, but more concerned about her right ankle. Patient reports that she heard a pop come from her right ankle while playing soccer 3 days ago over the weekend, and ever since her right ankle has become increasingly uncomfortable. She is able to bear weight but it is uncomfortable when standing or walking. Patient described the pain as a dull uncomfortable pain and she rates the pain as 7/10 to the right ankle and 3/10 to the left ankle. She believes that the right ankle is bruised and swollen. She reports that she takes Ibuprofen and Tylenol alternately for pain and swelling and it makes it tolerable. Pain is aggravated whenever she puts weight on it to stand or walk but feels better when she is seated with her right foot raised.
Current Medications:
Ibuprofen 600mg every 8 hours as needed for the pain
Tylenol 1000mg every 4 hours as needed for pain
One-A-Day Women’s Multivitamins one tablet daily
Ferrous Sulfate 325mg once daily
Allergies: Denies any drug, food, latex or seasonal allergies
PMHx: Osteoarthritis (diagnosed 7 years ago), Type 11 DM and HTN (diagnosed 3 years ago). Right total knee replacement (3 years ago). Received influenza vaccine this season, Current on Covid and other vaccines. Last Tdap 11/25/2020. No recent hospitalizations

Differential Diagnoses
1)Primary Diagnosis is Ankle Sprain:
An ankle sprain is an injury to one or more ligaments in the ankle with symptoms such as pain, swelling, soreness, bruising, limited range of motion and joint stiffness (Dains, Baumann, & Scheibel, 2019). It is an inversion-type twisting of the foot, followed by pain and swelling (Young, 2019). This type of injury is often associated with physical activities or sports. Sports injuries occur when running, cutting, landing from a jump, or from direct contact which can produce an audible tear or pop causing pain and swelling that are immediate, but ecchymosis may lag a day or two behind (American Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Society, 2021). JO has most of these symptoms and is able to bear weight which rules out a more complex structural injury or fracture.
2) Bursitis: Bursitis can be described as the acute or chronic inflammation of a bursa that results in localized pain, tenderness, and swelling over the bursa (Maffulli, et al, 2018). Other symptoms that are associated with this condition is low-grade temperature, the warmth of overlying skin, and a palpable bump over heel (Maffulli et al., 2018).
3) Plantar fasciitis: This affects women twice as often as men. It is caused by chronic weight-bearing stress when laxity of the foot structures allows the talus to slide forward and.

Belgium vs Romania Injuries and Patience in Belgium’s Euro Cup Germany Squad....Eticketing.co
Belgium coach Domenico Tedesco will wait for several key players to recover from injury. Even if it means they miss the opening Euro Cup Germany stages of the European Championship in Germany this month. Veteran defender Jan Vertonghen, midfielder Youri Tielemans and defender Arthur. Theate are being given time to play in the tournament because they are considered vital to Belgium’s cause, Tedesco said on Tuesday.

"Of course, you prefer to take players who are fully fit, but that's okay. We want to wait and be patient for some players even if they cannot play in those first matches," he told a press conference. The 37-year-old Vertonghen, Belgium’s Euro Cup 2024 most-capped international with 154 appearances, is struggling to shake off a groin injury.
"He will be there normally. This also applies to Youri Tielemans and Arthur Theate. The latter's position is very sensitive. We don't have many choices at left back. "It will only change if it turns out that they will only be available when, say, the final of the Euro 2024 Championship comes around. That's too long to wait. "However, I am confident that the injured boys are on track for the Euros.
Belgium vs Romania: Radu Dragusin Prepares for Crucial Role in Euro Cup Germany
Some of them have taken not one but two steps forward in their rehabilitation," he said. None of the injured players will feature in this week’s warm-up friendlies against Montenegro and Luxembourg. Romania centre-back Radu Dragusin found chances limited at Tottenham Hotspur in the second half of the 2023-24 season.
But is crucial to his country's cause at UEFA Euro 2024 where his aerial ability, physicality and hard graft make him a standout player. The 22-year-old moved to North London from Italian side Genoa in January but was kept on the sidelines by the form of another new arrival for the season, Mickey van de Ven, something Romania coach Edward Iordanescu admitted was a concern.
It will mean limited game-time going into the finals, but Dragusin, who cites Netherlands defender Virgil van Dijk as a role model, started every Euro Cup Germany qualifier as Romania went through the campaign unbeaten in their 10 games. He will be among their most important players in their first game in Germany against Ukraine in Munich on June 17, taking the right centre-back role in what is likely to be a back four.

Editor's Notes
Field hockey could be considered to be a reasonably dangerous game. Although not defined as a contact sport, contact is often made. Additionally to this players are equipped with hard implements and injury often occurs. It is important for coaches to look at ways to prevent these injuries for the safety of their players.
According to a study conducted by Karen Murtaugh in 2001, the most frequently injured areas are the lower limbs, and the head or face, with 51 and 34% of reported injuries respectively. 66% of reported lower limb injuries were ankle sprains, followed by muscle strains at 16%. Whilst not necessarily serious for health, lower limb injuries such as these are limiting for the players lifestyle and should be managed. 77% of head and face injuries were impact traumas without concussion, including black eyes, bruises, wounds and broken noses. 22% were concussions. Head injuries are extremely dangerous for the athlete and need to be limited wherever possible. 59% of female hockey players surveyed reported back pain at some point during the season, the most common area sited was the lower back. However, despite experiencing back pain, players did not report it as an injury. Back pain could lead to more serious mobility issues later in life and is important to prevent when able.
Ankle sprains were the most reported injury of all the hockey players surveyed. A sprain occurs when a joint is stretched beyond its capacity and a tear forms in the ligament. This can be a complete or partial tear. More often than not the tear is partial and will require rest, ice, compression, elevation and seeing a professional. 1-6 weeks is the expected recovery time depending on the severity of the tear. For a complete tear, surgery may be necessary and could require months to heal. Like sprains, muscle strains appear when a muscle is stretched over its normal capacity and a tear forms. Again like sprains the strains can range from partial tears to complete ruptures and treatments are similar. Both of these reduce activity time, and prevention where possible is important.
Ankle sprains are common in many sports where direction change is necessary. Balance boards have been suggested as a way to strengthen the stabilisers around the ankle, another option is external stabilisers such as high topped shoes or prophylactic ankle taping. Balance boards have been shown to decrease the reoccurrence of ankle sprain, however for individuals who have not yet suffered a sprain no proven benefit has been shown. Unfortunately balance boards have been connected with a higher rate of knee overuse injuries, so it is recommended that even though they may be of use for rehabilitation of ankle sprains that they are not used as a preventative measure otherwise. High-top shoes and prophylactic ankle taping on the other hand have been shown to decrease ankle sprains for both previously injured and non-injured individuals and have also not been shown to have the same negative impact on the knees. These would be useful preventative measures for the coach to discuss.
Flexibility training has not been proven to reduce the incidence of muscle strain. What has shown some benefits is eccentric strength training. These are exercises where the body has to utilise muscles whilst lengthening them, incorporating these exercises would be of benefit. Stretching, warm-ups and cool-downs, have been around for years. Most recently it has been shown that dynamic stretching or a moving warm up is best pre-game as it prepares the muscles without releasing their elastic energy. Post match stretching may be static stretching combined with a walk. These should be performed pre and post every training session or game.
All head and face injuries in the Murtaugh study were caused by impact, whether by the ball, a stick, another player or even the ground. Most did not cause concussion and mainly resulted in bruising and black eyes, wounds (such as split eyebrows), and broken noses. The 22% that resulted in concussion are more troubling and undoubtedly need to be prevented wherever possible. Concussions are mild brain trauma and whilst one may not be serious, repeated concussions can increase the risk of dementia, Parkinson’s disease and depression.
The study by Dick et al in 2007, highlighted the 25 yard line (the area coloured in blue) as the most dangerous area on the field for head injuries with 71% occurring within this region. Since this study the rules have now been changed to attempt to decrease these statistics. The rules now state that when within the 25 yard line, you cannot hit the ball directly into the circle, which may prevent some of the crowding as well as the direct hits into crowded space. A change in the style of game is also recommended, aiming to spread the players away from one another to decrease injury by crowding. The third change coming in applies to short corners, a video is linked as an example. Progressively more players are wearing protective face gear in this situation which should be encouraged by all coaches.
Many hockey players experience back pain, especially those just starting out. When I started it was just expected that I would have some amount of back pain, so I can understand why it would be under reported. It’s quite an unnatural position to be in. With hockey you are bent over for long periods at a time, and if you haven’t got the correct body position you will get pain. Along with being bent over, your body is frequently twisted with every pass you make. I believe the expectation accounts for the difference between those that experienced back pain (59%) and those that reported it as an injury (1%). If back pain is consistent and ignored it could lead to mobility issues later in life, so something does need to be done about it.
To prevent lower back pain the stance most hockey players take it with their knees very bent, and their hips very bent and keeping their back as straight as possible. If back pain is still present with this stance, it may be due to over tightening of your muscles and lengthening of your ligaments (called ligamentous laxity). To prevent over tightening of the muscles, and therefore to prevent lower back pain, it is important to always have an appropriate cool-down in place.
To prevent injury coaches should:Encourage strapping of ankles, especially when injury has occurred previouslyAdd eccentric strength exercises into fitness sessions to prevent muscle strainsAlways ensure that appropriate safety protection is warn, with the most recent addition of the face guard in short cornersTry to drive your game tactics toward making space as it will prevent some of the overcrowding injuries that could occurMake sure your team participates in a dynamic warm up, and a static cool-down with a walkMost importantly, make sure you’re informed of any injuries present in the team, encourage players to tell you about injuries, and make sure you know what is appropriate for those injuries.
