2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Initial ideas
1. Initial Ideas for my Film Opening.
My main ideas for my film opening is going to be based around the crime/Thriller
genre. I have chosen that I am going to focus my Opening on this Genre sue to the
fact these are the types of films that I am most interested in and have to most
inspiration for. The fact that I have watched plenty of these types of films is going to
give me a good start as I have ideas already in plan.
My opening is going to initially set the feel of the film I am going to try and create a
mysterious and suspicious opening to keep the audience on edge and make them
interested by my opening. My opening is going to be based on a murder that took
place in the middle of the night. And the fact that the boys (3 teens that committed
the crime) are on the run. I want to mainly make my opening quick and suspenseful
full of criminal events and chase scenes. This is because I think that this is going to
help keep my audience entertained as the quick jam packed action opening will want
them to know what is going to happen next.
Firstly I am going to show a shot from outside a house looking at the window after
this shot I will then use the camera and film a shot where it gets closer and closer to
the window to the point where we end up in the room the camera was initially look
at from outside the building. This is where the action and murder comes in. The
room will be dark and gloomy to initially let the viewer’s know that was is about to
happen is not going to pleasant. Then the scene of diegetic shouting scene will
occur, in this scene this is where I will use my cinematography skills to use a variety
of camera shots to show the emotions of all the different characters in the room. For
example for the victim I shall use lots of high angle shots and extreme close ups to
show the weakness and helplessness of the victim. Whereas I will make an obvious
contrast of shots for the suspects using a variety of low angle shots to show the
power and dominance of the characters in this period of the opening. This followed
by the murder itself. After this I will then base the rest of the time I have on the
suspects on the run and being chased by a group of police and detectives. I will used
a variety of different ideas in this section to show the panic and worry from the
suspects. I will use things like close calls, decision making, injury etc.
I am also going to have the suspects having completely differing views to each other
making there chase even harder as they disagree a lot.
The 3 different characters are going to be the following-
- The violent one: Everything idea he comes up with results in violence
- The Boss: Always thinks he is right and never listens to any of the others.
Making the group end up in worse situations that could have been easily
avoided. This character is going to be stubborn and self-righteous
2. - The anxious one: This character is going to be constantly worrying and
panicking about the consequences. This character will be almost bullied into
the crimes they commit because he doesn’t have anyone else. This character is
going to be weak and scared.
I think by having these 3 differing characters will help make a better storyline as I can
input all 3’s different views and decisions. This will cause problem through the
opening making the audience want to know what happens to the group of differing
suspects as they run from a murder they so regret committing.
I want to have the basis of my opening focused on the regret and chase and panic
from the characters. I am going to make sure it is a quick and very action packed. The
3 boys are always going to be getting themselves in position they so wish they didn’t
keep the audience on edge.
