This document summarizes work with a group of 34 fourth grade students at Cavagnaro School. It notes that at this concrete operational stage of cognitive development, students learn best through concrete materials and short activities to maintain engagement. The teacher's role is flexible adaptation to student needs, as planned lessons may not work as expected. Grouping students collaboratively in pairs provides scaffolding to help all students participate and integrate, including shy students. Through mixing activity types and being responsive to the talkative large group, the teacher was able to have enjoyable classes where students learned successfully.
