Water is essential for all life but availability is decreasing while demand is increasing. More than 80 countries already face water shortages and by 2020 over half the world's population will experience water problems. The costs of water infrastructure have risen significantly while water quality has declined due to pollution. Over a billion people lack access to safe water and three billion lack sanitation, resulting in water-borne diseases that kill millions of children each year. Water is fundamental to health and dignity. Conservation efforts and preventing pollution are needed to sustain this critical resource.
