Confirmation bias
When we tend to search
for and pay attention to
information which can
confirm beliefs or hypothe-
ses pre-existing in one’s
mind
Once a student is exposed to the growth mindset*
and starts to eventually exhibit growth attitudes,
the confirmation bias may help the student in
reinforcing the understanding that intelligence
and ability can be strengthened through practice.
*See our infographic on growth & fixed mindsets
The tendency to attribute
specific characteristics to
the overall perception of a
person or thing.
Halo-effect
Teachers may evaluate students in a
biased way. To mitigate the halo
effect, train how our overall impres-
sion might influence our evaluation
of others.
Workshops for teachers focused on
cognitive biases can help to create
awareness.
Anchoring
A tendency to rely too
heavily on prior infor-
mation when making
decisions or estima-
tions.
1. Help students increase
confidence in achieving a higher
grade.
2. Ask students before the test if
they think they can achieve score
higher than 90%.
3. Higher confidence has been
found to boost performance.
90+%
Loss aversion
A tendency to prefer
avoiding losses than
acquiring gains. Studies
have shown losses weigh
twice as much!
When students are offered full
points at the start of the
semester studies have shown
that students will work harder
to maintain their grade.
Fear of
Losses
Pleasure
of Gains
Behavioral Insights can be used to enhance both student and teacher perfor-
mance by manipulating the effects of psychological, social, cognitive, and
emotional factors on individual decision-making.
