The Ideas Café was established by Library staff and teaching staff in the Kent Business School, to tackle the problem of students not reading around topics. It provides a safe space for any student or member of staff to discuss a wide range of topics and give research-based presentations of a subject of their choice.
2. The Problem
• Students only engage with Lecturer’s
prescribed reading
• Seemingly no willingness to read
around the subject
3. The Solution
• The creation of a community; the
Ideas Café
• A place to share the benefits of
wider reading and its application
• No hierarchy, no limits on membership
• The Library as venue
4. The Outcome
• Establishment of a shared community,
based around the University Library
• Opportunity for wider networking, in a
multi-cultural and multi-positional
environment
• Safe environment to practice
presentation and discussion skills on
any subject of interest

A conversation with one of the Business School Academics, who is also a Practice Partner in a firm of Chartered Accountants, identified an issue with the calibre of Business School graduate being produced.
Graduates were perceived as being technically competent, but lacking the creative ability to think outside of the box, to employ different ways of thinking.
We both agreed that University was a fantastic opportunity for wider intellectual development, with the opportunity to engage with the vast collections held within the institution.
There seemed to be no reading beyond that suggested by the Lecturer; tick-box learning if you will!
As a consequence, students were employing an extremely parochial approach to their studies, failing to seize the opportunities available to explore any forms of wider intellectual curiosity.
The establishment of a community, as a platform, to explore, share and learn from the benefits of wider-reading.
A safe place to practice presentation, discussion and argument abilities
Explore possible relationships between disparate subjects
Further intellectual development
Successful establishment of a multi-disciplinary/multi-positional community (ranging from Undergraduates to Academic and Research Staff)
Everyone was valued, respected and seen as being equal
Involvement in the delivery of presentations and discussions
Accommodation of a multitude of views and cultures
Increasing awareness of what the University Library has to offer
Danger of online only (e.g. the AOB Facebook page) – becoming just an online chat room
Everyone needs coffee at 18.00!!!
Need to effectively advertise and market the group
Promotion of the group during multidisciplinary induction student induction sessions
