The America Reads Challenge (ARAC) program started in the 1990s to address low reading test scores. It provides federal work-study funding for college students to tutor K-8 students in reading and math. At Duke, ARAC tutors work 4 hours per week at 10 Durham schools. The program benefits students by helping them improve reading and math skills and benefits tutors by providing teaching experience and strengthening their connection to the community. Applications for the current school year are due by September 10th.
