8 leaching of trace elements in enugu coal effect of acid concentrationINFOGAIN PUBLICATION
The effect of acid concentration on the trace elements composition of Enugu sub-bituminous coal from Onyeama Mine was investigated by leaching the coal using nitric acid (HNO3) of 0.5M, 1.0M, 1.5M and 2.0M concentrations. The amount of trace elements (in ppm) present in the filtrate from the leaching process were determined using Varian AA240 Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer with cathode lamps of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), and lead (Pb). Optimum leaching condition of the trace metals were obtained using 2.0M HNO3 solution for 1 hour and 75µm particle size which resulted in the detection of As(1.363ppm), Cu (1.413ppm), Cr (0.764ppm), Cd (0.146), and Pb (1.942ppm). 2.0M concentration of nitric acid has proven to be very effective in the leaching of trace metals in Enugu coal. Result of the SEM analysis shows that the porosity of the coal residue was increased and this provides strong evidence that significant amounts of inorganic elements were removed. Onyeama coal, therefore, contains large proportions of silica, calcium carbonate, and dolomite, as well as some elements such as aluminum, iron, and potassium, and other trace metals such as lead, chromium, cadmium, arsenic, mercury, copper.
Deactivation Modeling through Separable Kinetics of Coking On Ni/CZ Catalyst ...IOSR Journals
Abstract : Steam methane reforming (SMR) is a very significant technique to produce hydrogen from fossil fuels. In this particular work, nickel is used as the active metal and ceria-zirconia (CZ) bi-metallic oxide is used as the support. The foremost challenge to this process is sooting or coking over the catalyst surface and blocking the active sites. For the economic viability of the catalyst, it is very significant to make it coke deposition resistant. This is the reason that the kinetic modeling of the deactivation is very important. Therefore, this paper is aimed to model the deactivation and activity of the catalyst. A rate model of the deactivation process is also developed using separable kinetics. A comparison with commercial catalyst is also reported to show that the Ni/CZ catalyst is much more stable towards the coking. Keywords –Coking, Deactivation, Methane, Separable kinetics, Steam reforming.

In coal fired power plant, especially using sulfur content fossil fuels, much attention in recently paid to sulfur trioxide and sulfuric acid mist emission, because conventional desulfurization system should not be removed, which is installed to meet air quality standard for sulfur dioxide. Sulfur trioxide is highly reactive with water vapor and generally convert to sulfuric acid mist in atmosphere. Sulfuric acid is very fine under-submicron sized particulate matter or droplets. Recently sulfur trioxide cause air pollution and public health, discussion comes out, especially in the United States and Japan, that regulations and guideline should be enlarge the sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide and sulfuric acid. Moreover most countries reinforce sulfur oxides emission regulations or guidelines from coal-fired power plant. In this study, focusing that how to control the sulfur trioxide and sulfuric acid mist. Sulfuric acid mist found depending on the flue gas temperature. Generation and conversion rate of sulfur trioxide were measured according to temperature. The absorbent was selected to remove sulfur trioxide and sulfuric acid using wet type desulfurization system which the most proven technology at this moment.

Hollow-Polyaniline-Sphere-Coated Sensor For Measuring Gas-Phase OH Radicals A...IJERA Editor
In advanced oxidation processes, OH radicals play a crucial role in enhancing the removal efficiency of volatile
organic compounds. In this paper, hollow polyaniline (PANI) spheres were coated onto a conducting ceramic
honeycomb substrate to form a PANI sensor for detecting the concentration of OH radicals in the amorphous
phase. The hollow PANI spheres were effectively synthesized through a double-surfactant-layer-assisted
polymerization process by using Fe3O4 nanoparticle as the core template. The PANI shell thickness, morphology
characterizations and specific surface area were controlled by altering the weight of aniline monomers. The
electrical conductivity served as a function of the operating temperature and specific surface area, which is a
characteristic behavior of conductive polymer materials in the atmosphere. At an optimized temperature of
125°C and specific surface area of 1435 m2
/g, the PANI sensor reacted with a high amount of OH radicals
generated from the decomposition of ozone over α–FeOOH nanoparticles. The conductometric response after the
OH radical attack increased exponentially with the concentration of the OH radicals.

CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!

Alkali extraction test
- In this test, coal is boiled in caustic solution, oxidized coal dissolved and darkened the solution.
- Light transmittance of the solution was determined by UV- visible –spectroscopy at 520 nm (nano meter).
- In the case of weathered coal, caustic solution extract weak acids produced during weathering so if
transmittance is below 100 % it means coal is weathered. Lower the transmittance value means more the degree
of weathering in coal.
- If the transmittance value is less than 80%, then the coal is not suitable for metallurgical purposes[7].
Pimpri Chinchwad College of Engineering, Pune 10
11. METHODS TO MONITOR COAL WEATHERING contd…
Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy [FT-IS]
- In infrared spectroscopy, IR radiation is passed through a sample. Some of the infrared radiation is absorbed
by the sample and some of it is passed through (transmitted). The resulting spectrum represents the molecular
absorption and transmission, creating a molecular fingerprint of the sample. Like a fingerprint no two unique
molecular structures produce the same infrared spectrum.
- Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy is a
widely used analytical technique for determining the different
functional groups of a coal structure.
Pimpri Chinchwad College of Engineering, Pune 11The Spectrometer[6]
12. METHODS TO MONITOR COAL WEATHERING contd…
Petrography
- Coal petrography is a microscopic technique used to determine a coal’s rank (degree of coalification).
- Rank is determined by measuring the percent light reflectance of the maceral vitrinite.
- Petrography is primarily used as a tool to evaluate bituminous coals and coal blends in terms of their ability
to produce blast furnace coke.
- Coal petrography can also be used to determine whether contaminants are present in the coal and to detect
oxidized coal in the sample.
Pimpri Chinchwad College of Engineering, Pune 12
13. METHODS TO MONITOR COAL WEATHERING contd…
Coal slurry pH measurement
In this test 2 gm of coal and 20 ml distilled water has been heated to 150 0C for two hrs. Then it
is cooled by tap water indirectly. Coal slurry will be transferred to beaker and its pH has been determined by
respective probes.
Forth floatation
- Froth flotation is a process for selectively separating hydrophobic materials from hydrophilic.
- The flotation process is used for the separation of a large range of sulfides, carbonates and oxides prior to
further refinement. Phosphates and coal are also upgraded (purified) by flotation technology.
Pimpri Chinchwad College of Engineering, Pune 13
14. Effect of weathering on coal quality

Alteration in coal technological properties and size degradation.
Rapid deterioration in fluidity and reduction in plastic range.
Weathering includes oxidation as one of the cause of coal degradation.
Reduction in calorific value
Pimpri Chinchwad College of Engineering, Pune 14
EFFECT OF COAL WEATHERING
Coal Rank % increase in oxygen Kcal loss/kg
Low rank coal 1 106
High rank coal 1 133
Oxidation reduces calorific value[3]
15. Some of the tests are used to measure the physical properties of blast furnace coke.
Coke reactivity index (CRI) and Coke strength after reaction (CSR)
The CRI/CSR test measures coke reactivity in carbon dioxide at elevated temperatures and its strength after reaction
by tumbling.
In the test, 200g of 19 x 22 mm sized coke is reacted in a vessel with CO2 gas for 2 hours at 1100°C.
CRI=> The weight loss after the reaction equals the CRI.
CSR=> The reacted coke is then tumbled in an I-shaped tumbler for 600 revolutions at 20 rpm and is then weighed.
The weight percent of the coke equals the CSR.
For most of the blast furnace; CRI < 25, CSR > 60

21. SUMMARY
The properties of weathered coal have effect on coke properties.
Monitoring of coal weathering is necessary to get good quality coke.
Most blast furnaces require a coke with a CSR greater than 60 and CRI less than 25.

The process of heating of prepared coking coal charge or blend of coking coals in absence of air to a temperature of ~700 0C or ~1000 0C to pass through different stages such as softening, swelling and re-solidification into coherent cellular mass called coke is known as carbonization.
Coke quality:- The big and strong cokes are defined as good quality cokes. If the cokes are not strong, they will break out easily and make more fines in blast furnaces due to weak abrasion resistance. More coke fines accumulating in front of the raceway will change the softened cohesive zone in blast furnaces.
In mines coal exists in a water saturated, oxygen-free environment, any disturbance of this environment such as a change in the temperature, moisture content or oxygen partial pressure, result in change of chemical properties, physical stability. This dynamic behavior of coal is termed ‘weathering’
Physical => Weathering is the break down of rocks into smaller pieces, such as Freeze-thaw action, Exfoliation, Pressure Release and Crystallization of salts.
Chemical => Weathering is when a chemical reaction occurs in the rock causing it to decompose, such as Carbonation, Hydration, Oxidation and Hydrolysis.
Biological => Weathering is the break down of rocks due to the physical and/or chemical actions of living things, such as Plants, Animals and Humans.

An infrared spectrum represents a fingerprint of a sample with absorption peaks which correspond to the frequencies of vibrations between the bonds of the atoms making up the material. Because each different material is a unique combination of atoms, no two compounds produce the exact same infrared spectrum. Therefore, infrared spectroscopy can result in a positive identification (qualitative analysis) of every different kind of material.
Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy is a widely used analytical technique for determining the different functional groups of a coal structure.
FT-IR study shows the presence of aliphatic -CH, -CH2 and -CH3 groups, aliphatic C-O-C stretching associated with -OH and -NH stretching vibrations and HCC rocking.
Froth flotation is a process for selectively separating hydrophobic materials from hydrophilic. This is used in mineral processing, paper recycling and waste-water treatment industries. Historically this was first used in the mining industry, where it was one of the great enabling technologies of the 20th century.
Calorific value of Bituminous coal= 17000-23000 kJ/kg [4000-5500 kcal/kg]
Beneficiation[mineral extraction] => The weathered coal affect its beneficiation process as due to oxidation coal surface property get changed and coal surface become more hydrophilic. These results in difficulty in separation from mineral matter and beneficiation efficiency of floatation, agglomeration and flocculation process get reduced.
Deterioration => This may be due to formation of highly cross-linked macro molecular structure which will not easily melt and flow during heating.
Most blast furnaces will require a coke with a CSR greater than 60 and CRI less than 25.
