Infection Control
Dr. Marwa Abd-Elaziz
Lecturer of Adult Health
Nursing
• Prevent the spread of infection as the
health care facility may adopt its own
infection control policies and practices.
However, the procedures generally follow
the recommendations from the Centers for
Disease Control (CDC).
• Nurses should use techniques
prevent microorganisms from
that
living,
growing, and spreading. Two methods are
used to reduce or eliminate the
presence of microorganisms and thus
prevent infections.
Surgical Asepsis and
Medical Asepsis
• SURGICAL ASEPSIS refers to the practice
that eliminates the presence of all
microorganisms (bacteria, viruses,
fungi, yeasts, molds, rickettsia, and
protozoa).
• MEDICAL ASEPSIS also called clean
technique includes use of antimicrobial
agents, hand washing, cleaning supplies
and equipment, and disinfection.
• It is important that the
and their family
nurse
facts
teach
and
about surgical and medical
patient
practices
asepsis.
Universal precautions
guidelines
• Wear gloves if you may come in contact
with blood, body fluids, secretions and
excretions, broken or open skin.
• Bag all disposable contaminated
supplies.
• Clean all surfaces that may be
contaminated with infectious waste,
such as beds, wheelchairs and shower
chairs.
• Do not touch clean objects with
contaminated gloves.
• Good hand washing is the most
effective method to prevent the
spread of infection.
Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE)
• Gloves, aprons, gowns, eye protection,
and face masks.
• Health care workers should wear a face
mask, eye protection and a gown if
there is the potential for blood or other
bodily fluids to splash.
• Masks should be worn:
If an airborne infection is suspected
or confirmed to protect an immune
compromised patient.
• Gloves must be worn for:
□ All invasive procedures.
□ Contact with sterile sites.
□ Contact with non-intact skin or mucous
membranes.
□ All activities assessed as having a risk
of exposure to blood, bodily fluids,
secretions and excretions, and handling
sharps or contaminated instr
• Safe Use and Disposal of Sharps:
□ Do not recap needles; BEND OR
BREAK AFTER USE.
□ Discard each needle into a sharps
container at the point of use.
□ Do not overload a bin if it is full.
□ Do not leave a sharp bin in the
reach of children.
Green Hopitals
• Green hospitals are to be energy saving,
resource conserving, environmentally
friendly, health supporting, efficient, and
strategically managed.
Green building certifications
encompass the following
areas:
Life Cycle:
• Improved creation of value during
construction/operation/use
• Easy to clean and maintain
• Optimised service levels
• Adapted operational cycles
Ecology and Energy:
• Energy efficiency
• Area usage
• Low primary energy consumption
• Use of renewable energies
Indoor Environmental Quality:
• Use of low-emission materials
• Less radiation
• Daylight in rooms
• Environmental management
• Thermal comfort
Materials and Resources:
• Use of renewable resources
• Reuse of recoverable materials/
resources
• Waste avoidance
• Use of process water and rain water
• Avoidance of hazardous materials
User Comfort:
• Acoustical and visual comfort
• Indoor hygiene
• Barrier-free
• Thermal comfort both in summer and
winter
• Possibility for a change of use
• Safety Influence of the user
Sustainable Location:
• Traffic connections- public transport
• Orientation of the building
• Energy supply, utilities
and infrastructure
• Situation/image of the surrounding
area
• Location with regard to other
facilities/local amenities
