KVB117 Visual Art Open Studio 1
Welcome and Unit Overview
Acknowledgement
I acknowledge the Turrbal and Yugara, as the First Nations
owners of the unceded lands where QUT now stands. I
pay respect to their Elders, lores, customs and creation
spirits.
I recognise that these lands have always been places of
teaching, research and learning, and acknowledge the
important role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
play within the QUT community.

Affect
Concept Being a contemporary artist
does not just involve
crafting materials – it is
also about crafting
perceptions, feelings and
ideas.
Task 2: SOUND TO IMAGE (60min)
Produce a work that combines audio and 2D media. Your tutor will
organise you into breakout groups and you will be given one of 3 sound
works to use as a prompt.
• You may use any 2D media (drawing, painting, collage)
• After 60 minutes, share your composition to the appropriate column in the Padlet
below, and we’ll review some as a class.
Suggestions:
• Consider texture, pitch, layering, structure, rhythm, and movement - all of these
qualities have visual equivalents.
• Try using text to mediate this process: what adjectives that describe the sound?
• Avoid depictions/figurative elements - focus on the abstract properties of the
composition: space, shape, tone, pattern, movement, etc

Week 2 To-do List
q Task 3: Image to Sound
Return to your THREE-HOUR ARTWORK and create a 1-minute
sound work that is derived from the materials you used. As you
develop your sound composition think about how you can
arrange (sequence or layer) your sounds – eg irregular rhythm,
escalation, syncopation? (3hrs)
q Bring in a workable quantity of an allocated type of material:
HARD or SOFT (your tutor will allocate these)
q Review lecture materials/resources
q Health and Safety: Complete Online Inductions
q Pay the Materials Kit fee of $50

  • 17. Task 2: SOUND TO IMAGE (60min) Produce a work that combines audio and 2D media. Your tutor will organise you into breakout groups and you will be given one of 3 sound works to use as a prompt. • You may use any 2D media (drawing, painting, collage) • After 60 minutes, share your composition to the appropriate column in the Padlet below, and we’ll review some as a class. Suggestions: • Consider texture, pitch, layering, structure, rhythm, and movement - all of these qualities have visual equivalents. • Try using text to mediate this process: what adjectives that describe the sound? • Avoid depictions/figurative elements - focus on the abstract properties of the composition: space, shape, tone, pattern, movement, etc
