Sports radio stations primarily connect to stations via phone lines and broadcast over radio waves. Most stations currently use WAV file formats but some are converting to MP3, which can lead to quality advances. As newer, higher quality digital equipment and microphones become available, sports radio is evolving to provide higher quality sound and expand availability of radio streams to smartphones by converting formats like WAV to smaller MP3 files.
