The online environment continues to grow resulting in institutions and instructors searching for ways to determine and ensure quality in these courses. Not only are online courses as effective as onsite courses (see Allen, Bourhis, Burrell, & Mabry, 2002; Allen, Mabry, Mattrey, Bourhis, Titsworth, & Burrell, 2004), the demand in these course offerings continues to grow as students require more flexibility in where and when they learn due to work, family, and other obligations. Allen and Seaman (2015) reported that “enrollments continue to grow at a healthy rate, showing a 7% increase overall between fall 2012 and fall 2014” (p. 13). With increasing demand for online courses and the evidence that online and face-to-face courses are comparative in quality, research efforts re-focus on understanding how to best prepare students for online learning, design online courses, and deliver instruction online to positively influence student outcomes, in particular student learning. A series of cross-institutional studies were conducted at the National Research Center for Distance Education and Technological Advancements (DETA) to examine learner and instructional characteristics and their relationship to student outcomes in online courses. The keynote session will highlight the top indicators that emerged from the mixed methods studies to help inform the practice of learner support, course design, and instruction.

This mixed methods study explored racial or ethnic minority students who were enrolled in an online course to determine if there was a relationship between their online learning readiness characteristics and their outcomes across institutions. Also, minority student perceptions of what skills and experiences lead to success and how they can be better supported for online online learning is reported. Student surveys were administered using Likert and open-ended items to gather quantitative and qualitative data. Readiness characteristics included student reporting of their technology access, beliefs, and skills (technology access, online work skills, social technology skills, online efficacy), their self-efficacy (self-directedness and organization, achievement mindset, and growth mindset), and their communication (need for socialization, general communication competence, communication with instructor, and communication with peers), and student outcomes gathered included student perceptions of learning, self-reported satisfaction, and academic performance (course grade, instructor reported). Significant findings were discovered from multiple regression analyses indicating that several of these measures of readiness (online work skills, online efficacy, self-directedness and organization, communication with instructor, communication with classmates) positively influence student outcomes (learning, satisfaction, and academic performance). Qualitative findings indicate that minority students report time management, previous online course experience, and online work skills as the most prevalent themes of skills and experiences that positively influence their success. Moreover, they recommend that instructors and institutions provide them additional resources prior to the class to better prepare them to be successful, and that they receive support during the class by instructors and academic support staff. Recommendations are shared.

Assessing Transformative Learning Beyond the ClassroomD2L
When the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) was choosing a new LMS, they knew it needed to be easy to use—but also flexible enough to support their specific goals. With Brightspace, they’ve been able to develop a new way to track learning activities that happen outside the classroom. It’s called the Student Transformative Learning Record (STLR). Now, their students can share the non-academic learning experiences and skills they've gained with graduate schools and potential employers.
The Many Faces of Embedded Librarianship: How do we Evaluate Effectiveness?Kim Mears
Objective: The health sciences library of a comprehensive research university implemented embedded librarianship two years ago by placing librarians in the adult and children’s hospitals, in four colleges and on a partnership campus. The embedded librarians have spent the past year reviewing practices and working to create an evaluation tool to assess effectiveness.
Methods: Embedded librarianship has been implemented in the Colleges of Allied Health Sciences, Dental Medicine, Nursing and Medicine as well as the Health System, and a satellite campus. Each librarian’s embedded model is different and based on the approach of the individual librarian and the needs of the areas served. Embedded librarians created a survey to measure the extent of embedded practices in other health science and hospital libraries. Librarians wanted to create a tool which would help evaluate our program with vastly different models from one are to the next and which could also help other institutions do the same.
Results: A preliminary survey was distributed to health science librarians in early 2014 after IRB approval was obtained. Survey information was used to gauge interest in the need for a tool to evaluate embedded practices and form the basis of what evaluation has already been done in other programs. The survey showed a great deal of interest in embedding librarians and the need for a comprehensive way to evaluate program effectiveness. Librarians then worked to build an embedded program evaluation toolkit based on academic health science institutions.
Conclusion: The toolkit consists of various parts with can be used in combinations that fit the embedded program being evaluated. The evaluation toolkit was created to fit with academic health science institutions and will be piloted in the Fall of 2014. Later expansion of the toolkit may include hospital specific measures, which will require partnership with hospital librarians.

ABSTRACT
Learning analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for purposes of understanding and optimizing learning and the environments in which it occurs. Data driven approaches to teaching and learning are rapidly being adopted within educational environments, but there is still much confusion about what learning analytics is, what it can do, and how it is best employed.
This talk will provide a general overview of the field of learning analytics, its terminology and methods, as well as contemporary ethical debates. It will also introduce several open source and Emory-supported analytics tools available to students and instructors to facilitate the achievement of various learning outcomes.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) established a National Distance Education and Technological Advancement (DETA) Research Center in 2014 to conduct cross-institutional data collection with 2-year and 4-year Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs) funded by the U.S. Department of Education Fund for Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE). UWM has partnered with the University of Wisconsin System, UW-Extension, Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC), EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI), and leaders across the nation to develop a research model. This model is to promote student access and success through evidence-based online learning practices and learning technologies.
The DETA Center looks to identify and evaluate effective course and institutional practices in online learning (including competency-based education) for underrepresented individuals (i.e., economically disadvantaged, adult learners, disabled) through rigorous research. Furthermore, although the research currently is focused on postsecondary U.S. institutions, the DETA Center looks to advance their work in K-12 and internationally -- all are welcome!

Extended Abstract
Come help us develop a research model to facilitate cross institutional research on blended instruction. The future of blended learning should be driven by research-based instructional and institutional interventions as the result of cross institutional research impacting access, learning effectiveness, and student satisfaction.
To give you a little background, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will share their efforts in the establishment of the National Research Center for Distance Education and Technological Advancement (DETA) funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education. They seek to foster student access and success through evidence-based, cross-institutional online learning practices and technologies. Specifically, DETA looks to identify and evaluate effective course and institutional practices in blended and online learning, including competency-based education, for underrepresented populations through rigorous research.
This workshop looks to engage the blended learning community in assisting of the development of DETA's research agenda, including a research model for distance education and research toolkits that can be used by institutions across the country. Through collaborative group discussions, this workshop will look for participants to brainstorm and prioritize ideas around defining student success, identifying key research questions to drive future research, development of shared measures to be gathered by different institutions, creation of instrumentation, and more. During this presentation by Jason Rhode at the 12th annual SLATE Conference on 10/23/14, we explored suggested best practices included in the Blackboard Exemplary Course Program Rubric for designing engaging online courses. Jason shared practical tips from his experience building a course in Blackboard that meets the established ECP quality benchmarks. We also covered the steps and associated deadlines for faculty interested in submitting their course for consideration as a Blackboard Exemplary Course. This session was geared toward an audience already familiar with the basic online teaching tools available in Blackboard Learn. While the examples shared were specifically of courses in Blackboard, the principles can be applied to developing quality online courses in any learning management system. The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Indicators Affecting Student Success in Online Learning.
Abstract: The online environment continues to grow resulting in institutions and instructors searching for ways to determine and ensure quality in these courses. Not only are online courses as effective as onsite courses (see Allen, Bourhis, Burrell, & Mabry, 2002; Allen, Mabry, Mattrey, Bourhis, Titsworth, & Burrell, 2004), the demand in these course offerings continues to grow as students require more flexibility in where and when they learn due to work, family, and other obligations. Allen and Seaman (2015) reported that “enrollments continue to grow at a healthy rate, showing a 7% increase overall between fall 2012 and fall 2014” (p. 13). With increasing demand for online courses and the evidence that online and face-to-face courses are comparative in quality, research efforts re-focus on understanding how to best prepare students for online learning, design online courses, and deliver instruction online to positively influence student outcomes, in particular student learning. A series of cross-institutional studies were conducted at the National Research Center for Distance Education and Technological Advancements (DETA) to examine learner and instructional characteristics and their relationship to student outcomes in online courses. The keynote session will highlight the top indicators that emerged from the mixed methods studies to help inform the practice of learner support, course design, and instruction.

There were 3 primarily activities at the DETA Research Center over the last 5 years.
The first was to develop a toolkit to build a coherent language as which we can all do research. We are from different fields and don’t always speak the same language when it comes to what is research and how to do research.

With the toolkit, our second activity was to collect data from institutions across the country. We have collected data from 2/4years, publics and privates. This data collection resulted in the findings of ONE study that I will discuss today.
