Presentation given for the National College Learning Center Association In these unprecedented times, the face of higher education is rapidly changing, and our learning centers must adapt to find ways to help our students (the privileged and underprivileged) engage effectively with technology. The realities of how we support students and the services we offer them must adapt to the current shifts to online learning in their content courses. We must expand upon existing online services and/or develop new ones. We must also support/train our staff members to manage the new ways in which our learning centers must operate. Learning centers professionals are going to have to think of ways to deliver services 100% online. We need to think about our staff (students and professionals) and how we train them as well as the ways in which we engage our students who might be struggling with the demands of shifting to new modes of learning. A presentation to the English Australia Ed Tech Symposium - Plenary Address. Abstract: Those institutions that have pivoted rapidly from teaching face-to face to teaching fully online have learned many lessons over the last 18 months, both good and bad. But for some, this has been nothing new, instead it’s simply been business as usual. We have seen that those who fared better have well established frameworks in place to mediate their technology-enhanced learning offerings. That is, they have recognised processes that define how they translate what they have in policy, procedures and planning into practice. Such a framework can be found within a number of quality tools, that are designed to provide institutions with clear guidelines as to what need to be in place to facilitate a robust and consistent approach to teaching with technology. Once present, it makes it easier to undertake online teaching that does more than just mimic face-to-face practice, providing a robust platform to allow innovative pedagogies to thrive. Typically, this means the online learning has, or can become far more, active, collaborative and authentic. This presentation with share some of the things that have been observed across the higher education sector over the last 18 moths that we can all learn from.

Our workforce is becoming more diverse with employees facing different kinds of barriers to Learning. These barriers to Learning include not only physical ones such as vision, hearing and motor disabilities but also cognitive disabilities and literacy. The combinations and variations may be too numerous to cater for using the “one size fits all” design approach. Under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992, Australian Government agencies are required to ensure information and services are provided in a non-discriminatory accessible manner by implementing the Web content accessibility guidelines version 2.0 (WCAG 2.0). Private sector is also choosing to address accessibility requirements as part of social corporate responsibility. The challenge for Learning professionals is to designing accessible Learning including: a more technically challenging design and development approach.requiring a bigger budget.

Designing appropriate online staff development for part-time distance teaching staff presents many challenges. Traditionally, much of what is learnt happens ‘on the job’, as staff try out new approaches or meet each other for a chat over coffee (Clus, 2011). In a geographically distributed institution such as The Open University, this sort of situated and social learning is unlikely to take place often, particularly for its part-time staff. In addition, staff often will have the time and motivation to participate only in development or training which is directly relevant to their own working practices and is very timely for them (Ottenbreit-Leftwich, 2010). To encourage staff to make the best use of technologies and to adopt them enthusiastically, we need to make development engaging and attractive. In this presentation we discuss how we address these challenges when designing and developing training and development opportunities in the use of Blackboard Collaborate for part-time distance teaching staff in The Open University. An overview of the various resources and courses we have produced will be discussed, alongside participant perspectives. Our development pathways include experiential and peer learning in cohort groups, exploiting the potential of short online courses (Campbell & Macdonald, 2011), as well as supported self-study routes using online resources. Each of the development pathways we provide allows staff the opportunity to participate in shared reflection, fostering a sense of community (Baran and Correia, 2014; Perry and Edwards, 2009). As well as these main development pathways, ongoing support, for those not presently participating in one of our development pathways, is provided through online communities of practice (Kear, 2011).

With the recent redevelopment of postgraduate courses in project management for the School of Civil Engineering and the Built Environment, new challenges were faced to make units more inclusive of a variety of enrolment preferences. The short term ambitions for the courses included developing units that are delivered both facetoface, and entirely online and have the potential to be scaled to meet the growing demand for continuing professional education. To ensure that students could join either facetoface or online offerings of the same units, the implementation team brought internal and external cohorts together on the same unit sites on Blackboard. The units are currently under evaluation but some early learnings may provide insight into new approaches to blended learning, and how these approaches have facilitated new ways of teaching and learning through tentative academic culture change. For those institutions who have been specialising in distance education for some time, although they may have had to make some changes, the last few months have not been overly problematic. But for the remaining majority of institutions, there has been a monumental upheaval in how they are now required to conduct business, both for staff and students. Those who have fared better seem to be those who have reasonably mature frameworks in place to mediate their technology-enabled learning (TEL) offerings. That is, they have well established processes that define how they translate what they have in policy, procedures and planning into practice. Such a framework can be found within the COL TEL Benchmarks, that can provide an institution with clear guidelines as to what things need to be in place to ensure a robust and consistent approach to teaching with technology. This presentation will first highlight many of the lessons currently being learned across the higher education sector, it will also ask you to share what you have learned and then we will look at how some of these issues are contained within the COL TEL Benchmarks. Lastly it will make a case for investigating more fully how to use this tool to help your institution ready itself for success in the future.

As institutions learn more about how to sustainably tweak (customise) their Moodle environments to better service their unique needs, we are starting to see some very interesting examples of practice emerge; one’s that will not necessarily be seen on the Moodle Docs, Tracker, or Forums. One of these is the advent of a new course format developed by the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) called the Flexi Format. This new format allows both 'Week' sections and 'Topic' sections to appear in the same course. Included in this format is also two new ‘sections’ called ‘Getting Started’ and 'Assessment' aligned with a customized navigation block. Assessment, for example, has built-in smarts, providing the ability to draw in data via an abstraction layer from the Student Management System; 'People Soft', along with other automated features. However, this could be adapted to draw data from other system, such as Student One, Callista, etc. This presentation will demonstrate how this new course format looks and works, and will provide a rationale as to why it is been developed, but more importantly, why it has been seen as such a great way forward by many academics at USQ. In simple terms, it has given academic staff the ability to provide a more unique/customised experience for their students, while at the same time it allows the university to provide more consistency in how these courses will appear to students.
