CONCEPT OF POVERTY
• Poverty is the scarcity or the lack of a certain
(variant) amount of material possessions or
money.
• Poverty is a multifaceted concept, which may
include social, economic, and political elements.
• Absolute poverty, extreme poverty,
or destitution refers to the complete lack of the
means necessary to meet basic personal needs
such as food, clothing and shelter.
• Bangladesh is a model for developing countries. It
has also been included in the lower middle income
country category last year.
• The GDP growth rate of Bangladesh is 7.1% and
per capita GDP is $1465 (FY-2016). Increasing of
GDP improves standard of living and quality of
life of citizens.
But income distribution gap is increasing between rich and
poor. Gini coefficient shows income inequality between the
rich and poor citizens of a country.
Gini coefficient of 2016 is 0.39 in our country. In 2014, this
coefficient of Bangladesh was 0.31. Because of increasing
imbalanced distribution of income; in 2016, Gini coefficient
also increases; it is 0.39.
Because of unequal distribution of income, income gap is
getting wider between rich and poor.
PREVIOUS CONDITION OF POVERTY IN
BANGLADESH
• When it comes to the biggest challenges facing
Bangladesh, surely poverty is one of the most
crucial. And there is still much work to be done.
•
According to the latest survey results, the poverty
rate in rural areas was 26.4 percent, while urban
poverty was 18.9 percent. The current rate of
extreme poverty is 12.9 percent, compared to 17.6
percent six years ago.
The poverty rate in the
2010 survey was 31.5
percent. In rural areas,
the poverty rate was
35.2 percent and in
urban areas 21.3
percent.”
Bangladesh’s poverty rate has dropped 7.2
percentage points to 24.3 percent in six years,
according to a survey by the country’s
statistical agency.
PRESENT POVERTY CONDITION IN
BANGLADESH
• California’s extreme poverty rate is 16%, while
that of Bangladesh was measured at 12.9% in 2016
and 17.6% in 2010.
• Bangladesh’s poverty rate
reduced to 24.3% at the
end of the last
year from 31.55% in
previous years, according
to a survey report.
COMPARISON OF BANGLADESH WITH
OTHER SOUTH ASIAN COUNTRIES
CAUSES OF POVERTY IN BANGLADESH
• Over Population
• High Birthrate
• Lack of Education
• Unemployment
• Low wage
• Natural Disaster
• Dowry System
• Largeness of Family
• Lack of Cultivable
Land
• Lack of Social
Integration
• Traditional Agriculture
• Income Inequality
EFFECTS OF POVERTY
• Homelessness
• Severity of Disease
• High Rise in Cost of
Living
• Poor Literacy Rate
• Malnutrition
• Hunger
• Increasing Crime Rate
• Child Mortality
• Dependency
• Unemployment
• Drug Addiction
• Price Rise
• Terrorism and
Genocide
• Extremism
• Social Isolation
• Lower Life Expectancy
SOLUTION OF POVERTY
• Formulating and implementing plan at national
level for crediting poverty.
• Population control.
• Minimizing social discrimination.
• Employment generation.
• Increasing production rate.
• Promoting Technology.
• Development of Economic System.
CONCLUSION
The poverty stricken areas either do not have the
available facilities, or can only afford low quality
healthcare. This is a problem that is common in both
the rural and urban poor. For the urban poor, the
problem has worsened as they can only afford to
stay in slums where there are problems of
overcrowding and unhygienic living conditions.
Thank You

  • 4. CONTENTS • Concept of poverty • Previous Condition of Poverty in Bangladesh • Present Condition of Poverty in Bangladesh • Comparison of Bangladesh with Other South Asian Countries • Causes of Poverty in Bangladesh • Effects of Poverty • Solution of Poverty • Conclusion
  • 5. CONCEPT OF POVERTY • Poverty is the scarcity or the lack of a certain (variant) amount of material possessions or money. • Poverty is a multifaceted concept, which may include social, economic, and political elements. • Absolute poverty, extreme poverty, or destitution refers to the complete lack of the means necessary to meet basic personal needs such as food, clothing and shelter.
  • 6. • Bangladesh is a model for developing countries. It has also been included in the lower middle income country category last year. • The GDP growth rate of Bangladesh is 7.1% and per capita GDP is $1465 (FY-2016). Increasing of GDP improves standard of living and quality of life of citizens.
  • 7. But income distribution gap is increasing between rich and poor. Gini coefficient shows income inequality between the rich and poor citizens of a country. Gini coefficient of 2016 is 0.39 in our country. In 2014, this coefficient of Bangladesh was 0.31. Because of increasing imbalanced distribution of income; in 2016, Gini coefficient also increases; it is 0.39. Because of unequal distribution of income, income gap is getting wider between rich and poor.
  • 8. PREVIOUS CONDITION OF POVERTY IN BANGLADESH • When it comes to the biggest challenges facing Bangladesh, surely poverty is one of the most crucial. And there is still much work to be done. • According to the latest survey results, the poverty rate in rural areas was 26.4 percent, while urban poverty was 18.9 percent. The current rate of extreme poverty is 12.9 percent, compared to 17.6 percent six years ago.
  • 9. The poverty rate in the 2010 survey was 31.5 percent. In rural areas, the poverty rate was 35.2 percent and in urban areas 21.3 percent.” Bangladesh’s poverty rate has dropped 7.2 percentage points to 24.3 percent in six years, according to a survey by the country’s statistical agency.
  • 10. PRESENT POVERTY CONDITION IN BANGLADESH • California’s extreme poverty rate is 16%, while that of Bangladesh was measured at 12.9% in 2016 and 17.6% in 2010. • Bangladesh’s poverty rate reduced to 24.3% at the end of the last year from 31.55% in previous years, according to a survey report.
  • 11. COMPARISON OF BANGLADESH WITH OTHER SOUTH ASIAN COUNTRIES
  • 12. CAUSES OF POVERTY IN BANGLADESH • Over Population • High Birthrate • Lack of Education • Unemployment • Low wage • Natural Disaster • Dowry System • Largeness of Family • Lack of Cultivable Land • Lack of Social Integration • Traditional Agriculture • Income Inequality
  • 13. EFFECTS OF POVERTY • Homelessness • Severity of Disease • High Rise in Cost of Living • Poor Literacy Rate • Malnutrition • Hunger • Increasing Crime Rate • Child Mortality
  • 14. • Dependency • Unemployment • Drug Addiction • Price Rise • Terrorism and Genocide • Extremism • Social Isolation • Lower Life Expectancy
  • 15. SOLUTION OF POVERTY • Formulating and implementing plan at national level for crediting poverty. • Population control. • Minimizing social discrimination. • Employment generation. • Increasing production rate. • Promoting Technology. • Development of Economic System.
  • 16.
  • 17. CONCLUSION The poverty stricken areas either do not have the available facilities, or can only afford low quality healthcare. This is a problem that is common in both the rural and urban poor.
