The document discusses how the student's media product both uses and challenges conventions of real music magazines. It uses conventions such as a masthead, cover lines, and large central images. However, it challenges conventions by using a simple font instead of a bold one, only using text on the cover instead of images, and including a feedback section. The goal is to represent the indie music genre while making the magazine stand out.

In what ways does your media product use
1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media
products?
2. • In my music magazine I have used a large simplistic masthead in the colour
of black against a grey/white background. I have used Vibe’s technique
that they have done on their cover because it allows for the magazine
masthead to stand out without using bright colours. I did this because
bright colours don’t represent the Indie genre and so I wanted to use
colour that represented the genre. However, I haven’t stuck to the
conventions of media as I haven’t used a bold font in order to gain
attention. I have used a thin, simple font in order to correctly represent
the genre’s personality through keeping it simple.
3. • In my magazine I have gone against normal media conventions by only using
text in my cover lines rather than using mainly secondary images. I have done
this because I don’t want the main attention to be switched from my main
image which is of the artist because I wanted the focus of the magazine to be
centred around my artist. However, I have stuck to the conventions by using
the classic phrases like “Also Inside” because I wanted to attract the audience
into the magazine through other content. I have made my product look NME
due to the fact that it is a leading indie/alternative magazine and I wanted it to
look similar to this in order to represent the genre of indie music.
4. • In my music magazine I have used a large central image in order to keep
the main focus of the magazine to be on the central image. I have stuck to
media conventions of using a large central image of the main artist being
on the cover. However, I haven’t stuck to the convention of the artist
directly posing into the camera. I have done this differently by making my
model look to the side. I have done this because I wanted my magazine to
be different and stand out for using different poses.
5. • In my contents page I challenged media conventions by putting a feedback
section into the bottom section of the page due to it being a new
magazine. Large magazine companies wouldn’t do this because they are
fully set up and have more resources to research customer satisfaction
than I do. However, I stuck to media conventions by using a coloured block
in the bottom of the page to provide extra information to my audience.
6. • In my magazine I have gone against media conventions by using 2 images
smaller images and not 1 large image. I have done this because I wanted
to showcase other artists other than the one that is on the front cover. I
also did this to add variety to my magazine rather than it featuring one
person. However, I have stuck to media conventions through actually using
an image rather than only using text. I did this because I didn’t want my
magazine to look bland and I wanted it to have an appeal and stand out to
the consumer.
7. • In my magazine I have continued media conventions by using text to give
details of what is inside the magazine. I did this because if I didn’t then
this would mean that no one would pick up my magazine because no one
would know what is in my magazine. I didn’t challenge this convention
because if I didn’t implement it then my magazine would be inferior and
no one would pick it up.
8. • In my magazine double page spread I have followed media conventions of
using a large image on the first page of spread because I wanted to show
an interaction between the audience and the artist. However, I have gone
against the conventions by not editing the picture because I wanted to
represent my artist as she is not edited so you can no longer recognise her.
