JSI's Chlorhexidine Projects in Nepal, Madagascar and NigeriaJSI
28% of newborn deaths worldwide are due to infections. The entry point for many of these infections is the umbilical cord. Traditional practices to prevent infection (such as alcohol, oil, ash, or turmeric) vary from place to place and may be harmful. Chlorhexidine (CHX) is a simple, effective, 23-cent intervention that has been used to reduce neonatal mortality by 23% and prevent serious cord infections by 68%. Funded by USAID and other donors, a pioneering program led by JSI in Nepal has prevented at least 2.700 newborn deaths and has influenced other countries around the global. More than 25 countries have visited Nepal’s program, and 5 have implemented programs, including two programs funded by USAID and led by JSI in Madagascar and Nigeria. To create and provide a sustainable, affordable, and high-quality supply, JSI partnered with private-sector manufacturers in Nepal and Nigeria. Nepal’s Lomus Pharmaceuticals, whose CHX tubes are displayed here, have exported the antiseptic to Ethiopia, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Nigeria, and Pakistan. Nigeria’s Drugfield Pharmaceuticals has exported to Haiti and Kenya.

The Joint Learning Network in Action: Spotlight on GhanaHFG Project
More and more countries are implementing complex health systems reforms to achieve universal health coverage. The Joint Learning Network (JLN) is a country-driven network of practitioners and policymakers who together develop knowledge products to bridge the gap between theory and practice, with the goal of extending health care coverage to more than 3 billion people.
The JLN community is comprised of leaders from ministries of health, national health financing agencies, and other key government institutions in 27 Asian, African, European, Latin American, and Middle Eastern countries as well as a diverse group of international, regional, and local partners.
On Thursday, September 22, the HFG Project hosted a technical briefing session on the JLN's work on the ground, and about Ghana’s National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) on their collaboration with the JLN and the HFG project. Speakers included: Amanda Folsom (JLN Program Director, Results for Development), Nathaniel Otoo, (Chief Executive, Ghana NHIA), Dr. Lydia Dsane-Selby (Director, Claims, NHIA), and Chris Lovelace (Principal Associate, International Health, Abt Associates).
The information in this brief is drawn from a case study of the JLN conducted by Mathematica Policy Research in consultation with the THS team and the Evaluation Office of The Rockefeller Foundation. The study, completed in 2016, was undertaken to assess the extent to which the JLN had achieved its goal of becoming a country-driven, sustainable network helping to advance progress toward universal health coverage in low- and middle-income countries.

NHS Improving Quality and NHS England are working nationally with the Academic Health Science Networks to provide support and opportunities for the Collaboratives to learn from each other, ensuring the most effective and successful solutions are rapidly spread and adopted across England.
For the next five years, each Collaborative will support individuals, teams and organisations to build skills and knowledge about patient safety and quality improvement to create space and time to work on the challenges, and provide opportunities to learn from each other.
The programme is borne out of Professor Don Berwick's report last year into the safety of patients in England and builds on learning from the Francis and Winterbourne View recommendations. The report, A Promise to Learn - a commitment to act, made a series of recommendations to improve patient safety; and called for the NHS ''to become, more than ever before, a system devoted to continual learning and improvement of patient care, top to bottom and end to end.'
Aligned with and supporting the 'Sign up to Safety' campaign, the programme aims to make the NHS the safest healthcare system in the world by creating the culture to support a system devoted to continuous learning and improvement.
This resource summarises the Patient Safety Collaboratives current priority plans. Some of these plans are in consultation with partner organisations and may be subject to change. - See more at: http://www.nhsiq.nhs.uk/resource-search/publications/safety-collaborative-plans.aspx#sthash.O5lUFIQf.dpuf

Russian anarchist and anti-war movement in the third year of full-scale warAntti Rautiainen
Anarchist group ANA Regensburg hosted my online-presentation on 16th of May 2024, in which I discussed tactics of anti-war activism in Russia, and reasons why the anti-war movement has not been able to make an impact to change the course of events yet. Cases of anarchists repressed for anti-war activities are presented, as well as strategies of support for political prisoners, and modest successes in supporting their struggles.
