This document discusses ideas for elements to include in a thriller film opening based on the analysis of several images. It suggests that a thriller can feature a character with multiple personalities or focus on a seemingly haunted object. An image of a wide eye led to the idea that a thriller should grab audience attention from the start without revealing too much. Another image suggested making the opening realistic to relate to audiences and leave them wondering what will happen. A handprint made of blood helped portray the unsettling feeling of a thriller and trauma or pain of characters.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

This image revealed that a thriller can focus on an object or
something not human, but still have a disturbing result. Items
such as dolls, paintings, old wedding dresses, statues and mirrors
are all items that are believed to be haunted objects to use in
thrillers.

gave us the idea that a
thriller has to put the
audience on the edge of
their seats from the very
beginning. This helped us
to decide that our film
opening shouldn’t reveal
too much so that the
audience’s attention will be
captured easily and leave
them wanting to know
more.
The idea we got from this image was that we wanted to make our film
opening realistic, almost life like. By making sure that it is suitable for our
targeted audience, it is able to become relatable and easy for the audience to
understand the situation. As a result of making it realistic, it would have a
bigger impact on the audience due to them wondering what will happen
next.
The idea of a handprint made of which looks like
blood, helps to portray the eerie feeling you get
from viewing a thriller. This also adds to the
knowledge of people or one person experiencing
some sort of trauma or pain in a thriller movie.
