This document discusses key considerations for implementing Oracle's Primavera P6 project portfolio management software. It emphasizes the importance of comprehensive planning, collaboration between stakeholders, and establishing a sustainable support model beyond initial implementation. A successful implementation at a mining company is presented as a case study, highlighting factors like engaging local teams, addressing past issues, and negotiating an effective software procurement deal. Interactive online training is suggested as part of a long-term support strategy to ensure ongoing user adoption.

Scaling Agile with the Lessons of Lean Product Development FlowTechWell
While first generation agile methods have a solid track record at the team level, many agile transformations get stuck trying to expand throughout the organization. With a set of principles that can help improve software development quality and productivity, lean thinking provides a method for escaping the trap of local optimization. While agile teams can use lean principles to improve their practices, larger organizations can embrace lean to solve problems that commonly plague company-wide agile endeavors. Alan Shalloway explores the lean principles of mapping value streams, creating visibility, managing work levels, and more. Together, these lean principles and practices can help your organization dramatically reduce the amount of waste in the work that teams perform. He introduces kanban, an agile method that is a strong implementation of lean principles. Alan closes with agile adoption case studies that illustrate how lean thinking can extend Scrum practices.
Enterprise architecture (EA) can potentially promote a common business vision within your organization, provide guidance to improve both business and IT decision making, and improve IT efficiencies. Unfortunately many EA teams struggle to provide these benefits, often because they are perceived as ivory tower or being too difficult to work with.
The adoption of disciplined agile and lean strategies that are based on collaboration, enablement, and streamlining the flow of work are the keys to EA success. Disciplined strategies that produce light-weight, yet still sufficient, artifacts are the key to your success. This presentation explores both the success factors and failure factors surrounding EA, pragmatic strategies for a lean/agile approach to EA, and how EA is supported and enhanced by the Disciplined Agile framework. This isn’t your grandfather’s EA strategy.
Achieving High Performance DevOps: A Roadmap for Managers and Decision MakersVlado Barun
Is your Org struggling to increase the pace of deploying changes?
Do you feel like you are rolling the dice when deploying changes?
Are you content with the current State of Affairs or do you aspire to raise your game by several levels?
Finally, are you willing to make the required sacrifices to achieve high performance DevOps?
Warning:
This session is NOT about the latest/coolest set of technologies that promise to solve your problem.
This session is NOT about a product you can buy.
This session is about recognizing and understanding the First Order Principles that underlie successful DevOps.
Based on this we are going to develop a set of goals, how to measure them and specific steps on how to achieve them.
Furthermore, we will discuss the pitfalls that derail so many Organizations in this endeavor, how to circumvent them and even turn them into opportunities.
However, be advised, this session is not for those that look for an easy & quick solution.
The session is intended to be interactive, and challenge the way you think.
If you are willing to have an open mind and put up the extra effort, by the end of this session, we are going to have built a roadmap with goals and specific steps that lead to High Performance DevOps.
Building upon well established Scrum, XP, and lean software development methods, agile scaling frameworks such as Dean Leffingwell's Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) and Scott Ambler's Disciplined Agile Delivery (DAD) address large, complex software delivery initiatives through their full delivery lifecycle from project initiation to production. These frameworks have received significant interest in both federal government and private industries, recognizing the need for continued team-based iterative and incremental adaptive approaches to software development, balanced with scaling processes and factors at the Program and Portfolio levels and organizational governance models and guidance for large enterprise engagements. This session will provide a brief overview of these two agile scaling models, address the benefits of what both are trying to accomplish, and compare and contrast specific similarities and differences.

Beyond Monitoring | Leveraging Unified IT Performance Management for Patient ...eG Innovations
Application and desktop virtualization offer so much promise for smart growth, flexibility and cost savings in healthcare IT today, but along with this potential comes substantial risk. Poor performance and a bad end-user experience can degrade productivity, inflate management costs and, worst of all, negatively impact quality of care and patient satisfaction. At the same time, the healthcare IT infrastructure has increased in both scale and complexity. Hence, administrators struggle to determine when a slowdown happens what is the cause: Citrix? VMware? Storage? Windows? The application?
View these slides from our webinar where, along with HiMSS, Wendy Howard, Infrastructure Engineer with St. Charles Healthcare and Bala Vaidhinathan, CTO with eG Innovations, discussed how implementing unified performance-management powered a transformation from difficult, slow and reactive performance troubleshooting to well-planned, strategic rollouts, proactive maintenance, simple executive reporting and rapid caregiver support.

No longer is rapid application development out of reach for non-developers. If you understand the business process well enough and you're affected by the inefficiencies, then you can make a difference. Spending a couple of minutes to build a workflow, once, could save you a couple of minutes, every day of the year.
In this session Tracy will share:
- Getting started with Power Automate, Power Apps, SharePoint & Microsoft Lists
Quick win solutions
- Co-innovation with other Microsoft | Office 365 apps and services
- Supporting your citizen developers
If you're new to the world of workflows, form designers and application builders then this session will open your eyes to opportunities to improve as well as faith in your own abilities to do so.
In this session, Chris Haddad will describe where your Cloud application strategy may encounter challenges, when to migrate applications to the Cloud, and how to scale cloud strategy and cloud tactics across the organization.
Because transitioning to agile can be difficult—and often wrenching—for teams, many organizations are turning to kanban practices. Kanban, which involves just-in-time software delivery, offers a more gradual evolution to agile and is adaptable to many company cultures and environments. With kanban, developers pull work from a queue—taking care not to exceed a threshold for simultaneous tasks—while making progress visible to all. Alan Shalloway shares eight steps to adopt kanban in your team and organization. He begins with a value stream map of existing processes to establish an initial kanban board, providing transparency into the state of the current workflow. Another step is to establish explicit policies to define workflow changes and engender project visibility. Because kanban can easily be expanded to cover many parts of development, another step is to increase stakeholder involvement in the process. Join this interactive session to practice these key steps with hands-on exercises. By the end, you will have an initial plan for implementing kanban in your organization.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

“Today’s business world is fast-
changing, you need to be open to new
insights and be able to deal with
different situations when they arise.”

Understanding the drivers
• Xstrata has a successful, commercially proven operating model in
place already;
• Xstrata operates in a volatile market, where competition is a key
factor.
• Xstrata openly advocates a model of continuous improvement;
• Xstrata was actively seeking the integration of business process into
their chosen software solution;
• Selected sites had been identified to pilot the use of Primavera, as a
small part of a larger continuous improvement model;
• Project scope included:
• license procurement, implementation, training, support and
schedule build.
Why bother?

A true partnership
• Early involvement of IT and business stakeholders to
increase engagement and project support;
• Validation of suggested platform and approach
against corporate IT strategy;
• Promotion of active involvement of site based and
corporate staff;
• Senior stakeholders from both organisations have
established clear and transparent lines of
communication;
• Adoption of an innovative learning solution, to increase
user adoption and post-implementation sustainability.

A true partnership
“Working with Prescience is good because they understand they are primarily working
for the people who run the mine at each location - mine manager, production manager,
engineer etc. But they know success depends heavily on back-end IT systems. They
recognised the need to engage local IT support to ensure they were not treading on
anyone’s toes and doing things that don’t fit with our IT strategy.
The key to success is to make sure lines of communication stay open. We’ve developed
a successful working relationship and both parties are working together for the same
result.”
Collaborating to achieve success
“Prescience ask, they listen, they take notice and they ask again to make sure the real
meaning hasn’t gotten lost in the translation. Some other companies just want to do it
their way. It’s our environment and we know how best to manage it.
Prescience has supported us in this. They listen rather than say “We’ll do it this way and
you’ll live with it”. They are just not cut from that mould.”

Planning is paramount
The usual suspects
The planning process needs to be comprehensive and must address
both business and technical aspects of the implementation:
Areas to evaluate included:
• Implementation scope and Business Alignment
• Infrastructure – capacity and versions of hardware, supporting
software & network
• Team availability
• Training capacity and tools
• Application support – both during & after the implementation
• Testing strategy & experience
• Oracle product strategy
• Project planning and management experience & capacity

Planning is paramount
Plus a few less ordinary
The Xstrata business and technology model also needed to be
incorporated into the planning process
Additional areas to evaluate included:
• The memory of prior failed implementations of planning
software was still fresh in staff & stakeholder minds;
• Although a “pilot” model, there were two pilot sites each with
differing operational constraints;
• The pilot sites were 4 hours driving time apart and not serviced
by interlinking transport;
• Stakeholders were driven by each site, with a common project
sponsor;
• Common team and common timeframe made sense in terms of
maximum benefit to the client;

Planning is paramount
Plus a few less ordinary
Other Factors:
• Busy operational sites do not afford dedicated project resources,
which needed to be factored in to all information requests;
• IT stakeholders had historically held a pure service provision role
and had not had early involvement in project planning and
approval;
• In a SQL shop, there was much frowning about the future Oracle
footprint, and whether SQL would remain a supported platform;
• The debate about P6 v7 vs P6 R8 was raging in Primavera circles,
although R8.1 was not available at the time of project
commencement;
• Each of the pilot sites was firmly committed to the agreed target
outcomes, and to creating a sustainable model to support their
model of continuous improvement.

Ensuring Success
Build a Repeatable Process …
• Secure – active executive sponsorship & support
• Communicate – transparent reporting on progress
• Gather – proper materials
• Recruit – the right team members
• Organise – Create & update critical documents
• Analyse & plan – use an iterative method (3 rounds)
• Execute – a serious & dedicated testing process
• Experience – have a leader, a “veteran”
TOP TIP – ensure your process enables and empowers you to
move fast once your initial planning is complete

Ensuring Success
Do not over-complicate things
• Either implementation or schedule
• In an environment where speed to outcome is critical,
extraneous complexity only slows things down.

… and learn from Lessons Learned!
“We can’t change the past, but we can learn from the past.”
Anonymous
Prescience worked closely with Xstrata to ensure the
planning addressed lessons learned from prior projects:
• Do not implement the software in isolation;
• Ensure the business process is embedded into the project
lifecycle and the learning process;
• Ensure stakeholders remain abreast and engaged;
• Test, test, test and re-test assumptions, constraints &
desired functionality

Oracle software & support
• Historically de-centralised within Xstrata;
• Fit with model, although did not provide any economy
of scale;
• Prescience, together with Oracle, have challenged
Xstrata’s distributed procurement model (successfully!)
to achieve a more centralised purchasing model;
• Key benefit is discounts to end-user organisation;
• Additional benefit of having more visibility and
centralised management of Oracle CSI – contributes to
proposed sustainable support model.
An effective procurement model …

Beyond Oracle support
• XStrata has subscribed to Prescience’s
extended support (from what is provided by
the Oracle support agreement) model, to
provide application support to site and
corporate users;
• Provides ability for onsite support if necessary
(not achievable through Oracle Support except
in extraordinary circumstances); and able to
be scaled to requirement.

Beyond Oracle support
• Prescience has built a tailored eLearning
package for Xstrata, which provides two key
advantages over other available Primavera
training:
• Is specific to the software version
implemented;
• Is interactive and engaging, and supports a
blended learning model, vs the traditional
powerpoint and Oracle Tutor model

Wrapping it up
• Define the key objective or outcome for your
organisation that is driving the
implementation process.
• Determine what type of implementation is
most appropriate.
• “Begin with the end in mind” and make these
goals clear to your entire implementation
team & stakeholder group.
Determine why …
