This document proposes a new classification system for bony defects adjacent to dental implants. It divides defects into two main groups: closed defects with preserved bone walls, and open defects lacking one or more walls. Open defects are further divided based on the number of implant-bone contacts. Closed defects generally heal well with membranes or grafts alone. Open defects require more advanced regeneration due to less structural support. The classification allows clinicians to determine the appropriate regenerative approach and amount of expected bone fill for different defect types.
