McCarthyism
After WWII and during the 1940s-1950s, Joseph McCarthy took advantage of American fears about communism. He developed a list of around 200 government employees he claimed were communist infiltrators. Many people were accused of being communists, including government officials, writers, and entertainers. Their careers were often destroyed. McCarthyism led to paranoia and hysteria before beginning to decline in 1954 when McCarthy died in 1957. It showed how susceptible people can be to accusations and suspicion.

Karl Marx Notes
Karl Marx was a German philosopher who wrote the Communist Manifesto in 1848. In the manifesto, he outlined his theory of communism and six stages of history, culminating in a communist society without social classes or government. Marx believed that under capitalism, the bourgeoisie exploited the proletariat, or working class, and that this struggle between the haves and have nots would ultimately result in a proletariat revolution and transition to socialism and then communism. Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette's attempted escape from France in 1791 was unsuccessful and increased public distrust in the monarchy. As the revolution became more radical, the Sans-Culottes working class group took more control and property of nobles was seized. In 1792 the monarchy was abolished and France became a republic. Louis XVI was executed in 1793 after being convicted of treason. The Committee of Public Safety led by Maximilien Robespierre established a "Reign of Terror" from 1793-1794 where over 15,000 people were executed through quick revolutionary trials for any counter-revolutionary activities. The French Revolution began with economic problems and calls for political reform. In May 1789, the Estates General met but the Third Estate declared itself the National Assembly after being denied fair voting. They took the Tennis Court Oath to create a new constitution. King Louis XVI accepted limited power but secretly planned to dissolve the Assembly. Rising bread prices and rumors of a royalist attack led to the storming of the Bastille prison on July 14, 1789, marking the start of the revolution. The National Assembly established rights and freedoms in the Declaration of the Rights of Man but the King remained opposed to reforms.

The Age Of Napoleon
Napoleon rose through the ranks of the French military during the French Revolution. By 1799, he had become the dominant political leader in France, helping to overthrow the existing government and establishing himself as First Consul. Two years later, he took the title of Emperor of the French in a coronation ceremony. As emperor, Napoleon reformed many aspects of France, establishing codes of law, expanding the education system, and modernizing infrastructure. His military conquests expanded French territory across Europe, though his attempt to invade Britain was unsuccessful. Napoleon had a significant impact on Europe through his redrawing of borders and placement of family members in other European thrones.
