Slides from a talk given at the Oxford Publishing Society about how researchers can increase the impact of open access research (and research in general!). My conclusion is that:
• It’s not enough to publish work
• It’s not even enough to make it free
• For maximum impact, you have to help people understand and filter it
• This means providing quick and easy-to-read summaries for people within the field and adjacent fields, so they can more easily scan more of the literature to determine which information is most likely to help them make further advances
• And it means providing plain language summaries for people outside the field, indeed outside academia, to give them a 'key' for unlocking the more technical language in which research publications are typically written.

Co-Spread of Misinformation and Fact-Checking Content during the Covid-19 Pan...Gregoire Burel
In the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, the consequences of misinformation are a matter of life and death. Correcting misconceptions and false beliefs are important for injecting reliable information about the outbreak. Fact-checking organisations produce content with the aim of reducing misinformation spread, but our knowledge of its impact on misinformation is limited. In this paper, we explore the relation between misinformation and fact-checking spread during the Covid-19 pandemic. We specifically follow misinformation and fact-checks emerging from December 2019 to early May 2020. Through a combination of spread variance analysis, impulse response modelling, and causal analysis, we show similarities in how misinformation and fact-checking information spread and that fact-checking information has a positive impact on reducing misinformation. However, we observe that its efficacy can be reduced, due to the general amount of online misinformation and the short-term spread of fact-checking information compared to misinformation.

Guests of the #recruitcamp Nashville listened to this presentation and learned about various social media platforms and applications available as well as data to validate social media as a powerful tool to help them in their respective professions.
A slide deck discussing the results of my semester-long analysis on the hashtag "fake news". Within the deck is a compilation of statistical charts to offer ideas on the significance of this hashtag, as well as a deep dive into the social dynamics attached to this topic.
The shooting of Michael Brown by a police officer cued an intense reaction from citizens, officials, and activists. Guided by the theory of indexing during “event-driven” news and the literature on protest coverage, this paper investigates the voices in the news following Brown’s shooting. A content analysis of five newspapers during the first cycle of protests analyzed three aspects of the media coverage of Ferguson. First, we assessed the reliance on official and nonofficial sources in the content published. Second, we tested the relationship between official and nonofficial sources to episodic or thematic coverage. Third, we tested the relationship between sources and the frames of the “protest paradigm,” a pattern of coverage emphasizing violence and deviant behavior. Findings reveal that nonofficial sources dominated the coverage after the shooting. But such sources challenged neither the episodic nature of the coverage nor negative portrayal of protestors. Therefore, our unique linking of the theory of indexing and protest coverage literature reveals that the nonofficial sources’ access is not enough to deter “protest paradigm” coverage. Frames emphasizing violence and clashes with the police were overwhelmingly more present than those emphasizing protestors’ grievances and demands. Our findings also reveal that frames emphasizing deviance prevailed more in the local newspaper than in national outlets. Overall, the predominance of nonofficial sources was not accompanied by thematic stories and critical viewpoints.

In this digital era, social media is an important tool for information dissemination. Twitter is a popular social media platform. Social media analytics helps make informed decisions based on people's needs and opinions. This information, when properly perceived provides valuable insights into different domains, such as public policymaking, marketing, sales, and healthcare. Topic modeling is an unsupervised algorithm to discover a hidden pattern in text documents. In this study, we explore the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic model algorithm. We collected tweets with hashtags related to corona virus related discussions. This study compares regular LDA and LDA based on collapsed Gibbs sampling (LDAMallet) algorithms. The experiments use different data processing steps including trigrams, without trigrams, hashtags, and without hashtags. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of LDA for short text messages using un-pooled and pooled tweets. The results suggest that a pooling scheme using hashtags helps improve the topic inference results with a better coherence score.
