Achuyt Kanvinde was an Indian architect born in 1916 who graduated from JJ School of Arts in Mumbai and Harvard University. He was influenced by functionalism, modern architecture, and regionalism. As the chief architect of CSIR, one of his most notable works was the design of IIT Kanpur in 1965. The 1000 acre campus featured academic buildings, hostels, sports facilities, and housing arranged to minimize walking distances. The exposed brick and concrete structures were designed based on regional construction methods and climate. Kanvinde's principles emphasized function, social values, simplicity, and use of local materials.
