From the SMX Advanced Conference in Seattle, Washington, June 2-3, 2015. SESSION: Converting The Mobile Visitor. PRESENTATION: Think You've Got Mobile PPC Figured Out? Think Again! - Given by Margot da Cunha, @ChappyMargot - WordStream Inc., Content Marketing Specialist. #SMX #14C
SMX Advanced 2015 Presentation on Converting the Mobile Visitor Margot da Cunha
Seventy-four percent of mobile consumers use a search engine as part of their research process. Ninety-three percent of people who use their phone to search go on to make a purchase. You prospects likely check their phones upon waking up, waiting for the train, and while scarfing down a turkey sandwich during their lunch break. It’s OK to admit that we’re all addicted to our smartphones. In May of 2015 Google even announced that mobile searches have surpassed desktop! But yet marketers suck at converting the mobile visitor... Learn how to address the misconceptions about mobile PPC and convert more traffic with ahead-of-the-game tactics to give your mobile audience what they want.
How engaged is your brand with your prospects and customers?
Since the 1800s we’ve been building new communication technologies. From the telegraph to the fax machine to the “leave a message after the beep”. From voicemail to email then to
the first instant messaging service and SMS. Finally, we arrived at live chat which gave us the experience of quick message and those three little dots signaling a reply.
Communication these days is instant and its interactive — friends make plans faster, families stay closer, and businesses provide answers instantly. Customers expect conversations to happen how, when, and where they want. Across whatever platform a customer wants to communicate with your brand on - phone, text, Facebook Messenger, email, Slack, and more.
Whether you are B2B or B2C – today is all about B2H (Business To Human) and with it a demand for a personal, fast and relevant user experience at every touch point across the buyer journey. In this session, we’ll show how business strategy, user experience and real-time data are driving today’s marketing and sales experience.
Be prepared to discover:
• Why the Marketing Funnel is dead and the customer centric Fly Wheel is the key
• How chat bots are blurring the line between marketing, sales and service
• How Messenger delivered a 477% improvement in the cost per lead (Case Study)
• How to generate leads and engage customers through conversational marketing
• How SMarketing is driving a unified sales and marketing team
• What tools and technologies you need in your 2018 MarTech Growth Stack to do all the heavy lifting for you

How Machine Learning is Changing the Landscape of Search, Discovery and Engagement
Today’s consumers have more choices than ever and are less brand loyal than at any point in history. We’ll examine pivotal inflection points driven by consumers that influence search and data discovery. These directly affect what search engines rank and show in results, so you need to know what you can control and influence. Data about your business, products, and services remains one key area under-explored by most businesses, and digital knowledge management is proving to have a deep impact on consumer engagement, revenue, and business success.
Content and commerce: The way forward to engage with the consumers of the futureIksula
The very nature of consumer behaviour is at the cusp of a major shift. The smartphone generation, who have grown up with connected devices and high speed internet, now constitute a major chunk of online shoppers. Retail salespersons and word-of-mouth, the traditional sources of buying advice for consumers, have been supplanted by a far larger network of online communities, social media platforms and a deluge of user-generated content.
Brands and Retailers no longer control the narrative – it is in the hands of consumers. Modern consumers demand a rich, diverse and detailed content, and a unified experience across information channels. It is the brands’ job to keep up.
In this presentation, we discuss the genesis of this dynamic ecosystem, and how Brands and Retailers can adapt to it by keeping a flexible approach, updating their systems and processes, and leveraging user feedback and market signals to constantly fine-tune their Content Strategy.
There’s a lot of buzz about content marketing. But what makes your content marketing plan go from good enough to great? Great content marketing combines community insights, an optimized distribution process and most importantly, content, that not only resonates with your customers and prospects, but also leads to preferred action.
In this fast-paced session, Zena will lead you through helpful large brand content marketing case studies from large brands. She’ll share tips on streamlining process and trends to help you walk away with a “good to great” content marketing game plan.

Understanding and implementing SEO User Intent - Part 1Authoritas
A lot of SEOs are talking about the importance of understanding your buyers' search intent and how this can help you build a winning SEO and content marketing strategy. In this presentation and in-depth blog post which accompanies it, Laurence O'Toole, CEO of Authoritas (a leading SEO SaaS platform), discusses how you can do this automatically and some of the pitfalls and limitations he has seen in SEO advice on this topic.
First presented at Search London in February 2020.
Thanks to the broad proliferation of digital channels such as email, text, chat, display ads, paid search ads, social media, ecommerce and website interactions, your customer's buying process has grown to be highly complex. Before making a purchase decision, a prospective customer will engage numerous times with your brand and your people through many different channels - sometimes over many days, weeks, and months. And, after the decision is made, the fun really begins. Empowered with digital media channels of their own, customers can become your greatest advocates or your worst nightmare. So, how are you responding?

Editor's Notes
SPEAKER: TOMMY
Hello and thank you so much for joining us today.
I’m Tommy Marzella, a Marketing Manager for IgnitionOne and I’ll be moderating the discussion today.
SPEAKER: TOMMY
In today’s agenda, we are going to provide you with details on the latest trends in mobile search as well as tips for planning your 2015 holiday search that will impact your strategy development. From there we are discuss how to optimize ad creative for mobile, explain why context matters and conclude with best practices on how to engage with holiday shoppers
SPEAKER: ROB
According to a recent study done by Nielsen, 71% of Americans own a smartphone – this is 85% for millennials. Knowing that smartphone use is on the rise – retail brands need to be prepared and ready for how smartphones are being used (both in-store and throughout the purchase process).
In addition, Google’s mobile visitors surpassed desktop visitors for the first time in late 2014 (Search Engine Watch).
SPEAKER: ROB
Mobile ad spending will reach $64 billion in 2015 and $158 billion by 2018, indicating the rising importance of mastering mobile search (eMarketer)
The keytakeaway here is that you are missing out if you are not optimizing for mobile. Advertisers must understand the key differences between mobile and desktop and optimize toward these.
SPEAKER: DAVE
Looking at IgnitionOne research, you can see mobile outranks both desktop and tablet in year over year growth in media spend in each of the last three quarters.
That said, while mobile traffic is growing, more conversions happen on the desktop. eMarketer estimates that mobile will account for just 1.5% of total sales in 2015.
But mobile still plays essential role in the consumer decision-making process, especially during the holiday season:
In-store product & brand research
Social validation prior to purchase
Transactional purposes like mobile couponing
SPEAKER: DAVE
So it’s really no longer a question of when to adopt a mobile strategy, but how to do it effectively.
SPEAKER: DAVE
According to research from Microsoft and Ipsos consumers rely on their mobile devices throughout the path to purchase from research through purchasing and sharing — no surprise there.
Even so, wherever consumers convert, either on their desktops or in-store, research still shows they are primarily using their mobile devices for upper funnel activity.
As you start to ramp up your holiday planning, the key lays within understanding how your customers are shopping and understanding their journey, and one of the best ways to understand their journey is to analyze historical data. For example, what was your customers first touch point and at what touch point where they motivated to buy?
As an example, one recent study found that 70 percent of conversions happen within 5 hours of a mobile search and many mobile users are often in transit while searching on a mobile device. This tells you a lot about user behavior and shows the potential opportunity for brands who are willing to lay the groundwork for a great foundation.
So let’s dive into some tips to begin planning for your 2015 mobile strategy.
SPEAKER: DAVE
Step 1 – pretty straightforward – Research, define, agree on and socialize your goals for the holiday season. Sounds obvious, but it can’t be overstated how critical it is.
Gather your key players into a room and decide exactly what you want to achieve this holiday season. Make sure to have all of the resources and data you need and focus on analyzing and evaluating the data you have with you.
The first thing you need to know is your budget. You’re likely aiming to spend as efficiently as possible. But how much are you spending? Do you have the green light to spend unlimited budget as long as you’re hitting your ROI? If not, how do you plan to allocate your budget throughout the season? From there, you can set your targets based on the changes and performance from the previous year.
List out your targets and make sure that all stakeholders are on board. Don’t let lingering silos cause stoppages or other inefficiencies during this peak season. This is a great time to bring everyone together on the same page. By using historical data, you can begin to compare to last year to see where you need to be.
In addition to pure revenue, you may also be considering:
Sales Volume
Gross Margin
Store visits
Offline sales
By laying out what everyone needs to accomplish, your team is held accountable and knows what needs to be done.
SPEAKER: DAVE
Plan ahead – perform a good amount of testing early in Q4. You want to remain adaptable, but don’t want to tinker with a lot of testing during the peak season.
This offers a solid foundation, based on historical data, on how you want to approach the holidays, while leaving room for adaptability. You can set a strategy and stay on course to implement changes that may happen in the marketplace.
At any moment, inventory can change. You might run low on product Y or need to cut prices on Product Z. So be prepared.
Coming together as a team and breaking down internal silos will help to know how to manage and handle these unexpected moments, while also determining how to best work together as a team for your mobile strategy.
SPEAKER: DAVE
While the holiday weekend started strong, impressions showed little growth compared to the 2013 shopping weekend. Impressions were flat comparatively, growing only 4% YoY.
The biggest story from this slide, though, is the increase in Black Friday numbers at 77% growth followed by a 50% increase in Saturday spend, blowing away Cyber Monday.
SPEAKER: DAVE
In fact, it appears the importance of Cyber Monday may be waning, giving way to Black Friday. YoY growth was significantly higher, and Black Friday surpassed Cyber Monday with 39% of Thanksgiving weekend spend (compared to 27% for Cyber Monday).
Now, this COULD be due to a late Thanksgiving last year. But, we have another one again this year – November 26 (just a day earlier than last year)
SPEAKER: DAVE
Intraday data becomes very important during periods of peak competition (Black Friday, Cyber Monday) since it allows a marketer to get a much quicker read on marketplace conditions and react accordingly.
Are inventory changes impacting performance?
Competitive pressures like flash sales or other promotions?
Are bid prices increasing?
Maybe during a normal day, you can wait until tomorrow to know the answers to these questions, but definitely not during the Thanksgiving Weekend.
SPEAKER: DAVE
As we discussed earlier, what’s your target? Is all revenue alike, or are you really looking to maximize gross margin?
Margin level bid optimizations allow marketers to close the gap between mere order and revenue maximization and profit maximization.
Margin level, product or SKU data can be fed into our system via feed.
Keyword level optimizations will pick up marginal efficiencies (pushing higher margin products and pulling back on lower margin products) to maximize marketer profitability.
SPEAKER: DAVE
Lastly, take control where the engines let you.
As the proportion of Mobile and tablet traffic grows, it becomes more and more important to have control over that traffic.
Unfortunately the engines no longer allow for device specific keyword level controls – all we have left are multipliers. This means that it’s that much more important to continuously optimize Mobile and Tablet multipliers at the most granular levels (ad group). Bing allows for additional granularity of optimization by giving control over Tablet multipliers.
This becomes even more important during the holiday season since the multipliers that work efficiently for most of the year may be completely off during the holiday ramp up.
Here’s boost media to continue to discuss how context plays a role.
SPEAKER: ROB
To take advantage of the opportunity on mobile, marketers need to understand that device users have different objectives than desktop users
Mobile traffic is growing, but more conversions happen on desktop
Target and Amazon reported that 60% of traffic from Nov-Dec in 2014 came from mobile
eMarketer estimates that mobile will account for just 1.5% of total sales in 2015
Mobile still plays an essential role in the consumer decision-making process, especially during the holiday season:
In store product and brand research
Social validation prior to purchase
Transactional purposes like mobile couponing
Desktop users:
Users conduct heavy research online before pulling purchase trigger
Users typically have more time to browse
Online experience and larger screen make purchasing easy and painless
Mobile users:
On the go
Users seek information in quick, easily digestible bites
Users are less patient and more task-driven because of small screen
Users drive in-store visits and store calls

Key here is that Value prop is the same, but the context of the ads change
People are afraid of the desktop experience on their mobile phone. When you can confirm that the experience is better your conversions go way up

Marketable moments are unbounded. They can happen at any time across any channel. Our customers themselves now define when and how these moments appear.
With the explosion of mobile engagement, consumers today are constantly connected, living their lives seamlessly transitioning between physical and digital worlds
For marketers this has opened up new opportunities to connect but new challenges in connecting.
Our customers have opened up nearly infinite potential for engagement with our businesses, but at the same time have raised a very high bar for what a beneficial engagement looks like. They are demanding new levels of relevance and contextual awareness, such that our old marketing approaches are falling short and not loving up to their expectations.
Our challenge is to make these connections matter by making them relevant and engaging.
SPEAKER: ROB
I want to Know:
Mobile device provides instant access to information & data
65% of online consumers look up more information online now versus a few years ago
SPEAKER: ROB
Creative which is not optimized for the moment of engagement leaves customers feeling like we are not listening, not understanding their needs, and not the right person to do business with.
I’d imaging each of you has experienced this yourself as you engage with brands and businesses. Having messaging which isnt relevant to what I am searching for is one of the most frustrating experiences online.

1. Add at least 1 mobile preferred ad to each of your ad groups
2. Create and test multiple ad variations
limit brand testing > there is little to no ad fatigue in search (unlike social platforms) and this could negatively impact QS and thus CPCs>> this is more beneficial for retail vertical clients … in general, you should use the desktop ad as a baseline for testing against to mitigate any adverse effects on performance
3. Send users to mobile optimized landing pages
4. Utilize ad extensions
to improve QS and to promote page monopolization on the SERP
5. Highlight mobile-friendly user experience
6. Review performance, including average position, and be vigilant about optimizing those mobile bid adjustments. These cannot be “set it and forget it.” Remember, there is limited real estate on mobile devices.
7. Account for misspellings – this is increasingly important to help offset potential negative impact of Google’s close variant matching
8. Have evergreen creative on hand. While you always want to be optimizing everything, be prepared. You can’t afford to be left without something effective if the market forces your hand.
9. Call tracking integration for click to call features – this can allow you to attribute offline phone orders to your paid search efforts and optimize effectively.
10. Review brand performance as CPC’s are increasing industry wide
Check average position.
find out where you ad is appearing on the search results page. On a regular paid search campaign, there are up to 11 ads shown on any given page. But in mobile, that’s usually limited to 2 or 3. if your average position in mobile paid search campaign isn’t better than 3, you are not showing up where you need to be
Use shorter queries.
Searchers will not be typing up a storm with mobile devices. For mobile campaigns, target shorter queries that people can easily type in their phones
Account for misspellings.
Mobile searches include more misspellings and shorter phrases. This is critical to remembering during the bidding process. You should start broad to discover mobile keyword phrases and then optimize from there
