Urban health and community resilience in the Lagos metropolis ( A Presentatio...Dr. Ebele Mogo
A Presentation By Ebele Mogo, DrPH. By 2050, two-thirds of the global population will live in cities. Already, over half of the world’s population lives in urban centers. In line with Goal 11 of the Sustainable Development Goals (S.D.G.s), these urban centers need to be made sustainable. Healthy and resilient urban development prioritizes the physical and social environment of urban residents and safeguards their health in the face of future stresses. This mixed methods study sought to understand the extent to which health and resilience were integrated into the development of the Lagos metropolis. This study serves as a case study for other metropolises on how to integrate and considerations for integrating urban health and resilience into city planning processes.

Integrated Solid Waste Management as Panacea for a sustainable Clean City in ...iosrjce
As a result of continuous economic growth, urbanization and industrialization there has been
increase in volume and types of solid and hazardous waste particularly in developing countries. Many Nigeria
cities and towns are facing problems of effective collection of garbage from homes and streets the situation that
make Nigerians to be permanently accustomed to dirt environment. Based on this background, the paper
examines the waste conditions and disposal as well as the influence on the environment in term of cleanliness at
Ado Ekiti in Nigeria using both primary and secondary sources of data collection which were subjected to
descriptive statistical analysis. The evidence of the result can be clearly seen every day by way of indiscriminate
discharge of garbage into drains and at times on the highways due to ineffective ways of waste management in
the town. The paper therefore recommends integrate waste management system as an option towards a clean
city.

Land use planning: Panacea a Sustainable Lagos MegacitySamuel Dekolo
There is a trajectory between land use planning and sustainable development. Both concepts tend to deliberately use available societal resources in a rational way in order to meet future desired needs and aspirations. However, the lack of land use planning of megacities in developing countries has brought about various environmental and economic consequences which cannot be overlooked. The sprawling nature of the Lagos megacity is very alarming and to achieve sustainability, there is need to strike a balance between the spatial needs for human activities and available land through sustainable land use planning which is constant. This paper examines the theoretical underpinnings of land use planning, which seems to be dislocated from existing planning practice and emphasize the need for a holistic approach which transcends the traditional land use planning in order to achieve sustainable development.

3. I live in Lagos, Nigeria, the largest metropolitan city and the
commercial nerve centre of Nigeria.
Lagos is the most populous city in Nigeria, the second
fastest-growing city in Africa and the seventh in the world.
Lagos was reported in 2014 to have a metropolitan population
of 21 million, making it the largest metropolitan area in Africa,
with a land area covering 999.6km2.
Lagos is Nigeria's economic focal point, generating a
significant portion of the country's GDP. Most commercial and
financial business are located in Lagos.
INTRODUCTION
4. The high urbanization of Lagos and its small land area has given
rise to deteriorating living conditions, increasing rates of death
and diseases caused by pollution and poor sanitation.
Lagos is simply the biggest node in the shantytown corridor of
70 million people that stretches from Abidjan (Ivory Coast) to
Ibadan (Nigeria) in the west coast of Africa.
Lagos represents the epitome of urban decay. The metropolis is
replete with environmental problems ranging from slums and
squatter settlements, to crime and delinquency.
INTRODUCTION
5. According to UN Habitat, Lagos has about 100 slums as at
2004.
The poor living condition and lifestyle of majority of Lagosians
can be attributable to poverty and the quest for economic
survival.
The high level of environmental degradation in Lagos is
negating the concept of sustainable development.
However, the lifestyle of Lagos inhabitants can be improved to
achieve the Millennium Development Goals through enhanced
poverty management and sustainable environmental principles.
INTRODUCTION
7. Poor sanitation and improper
refuse disposal are common with
most environments in Lagos
High Green House Gas
emission being injected into
the environment
LAGOS LIFESTYLE
9. Improving the lifestyle of inhabitants of Lagos is important in order
to achieve a sustainable environment.
The major areas that is needed to be improved upon in Lagos
are:
Public transportation system: Efficient and improved
transportation system through the deployment of high capacity
buses that are environmental friendly with little GHG emission
Refuse and sewage disposal management: Improved refuse
disposal system will help keep the environment clean
Access to clean water: Access to clean water will improve
hygiene and lifestyle of Lagos dwellers
ACTIONS REQUIRED
10. Mass housing: Affordable mass housing is required through
public-private sector partnerships to improve urbanisation and
social infrastructure.
Child right: The right of every child to education is essential while
laws should be enacted to prevent child labour.
Urban Planning: Improve the use and design of scarce land,
including air, water, and the infrastructure passing into and out of
urban areas such as transportation and distribution networks.
ACTIONS REQUIRED
13. Mass housing that is affordable and environmental friendly
IMPROVED LIFESTYLE
14. Climate change is destroying our path to sustainability.

limited resources. Sustainable development offers the
best chance to adjust our course. – Ban Ki-moon, UN
