Self-adaptation Challenges for Cloud-based Applications (Feedback Computing 2...
Abstract: Software applications accessible over the web are typically subject to very dynamic workloads. Since cloud elasticity provides the ability to adjust the deployed environment on the fly, modern software systems tend to target cloud as a fertile deployment environment. However, relying only on native elasticity features of cloud service providers is not sufficient for modern applications. This is because current features rely on users' knowledge for configuring the performance parameters of the elasticity mechanism and in general users cannot optimally determine such sensitive parameters. In order to overcome this user dependency, using approaches from autonomic computing is shown to be appropriate. Control theory proposes a systematic way to design feedback control loops to handle unpredictable changes at runtime for software applications. Although there are still substantial challenges to effectively utilize feedback control in self-adaptation of software systems, software engineering and control theory communities have made recent progress to consolidate their differences by identifying challenges that can be addressed cooperatively. This paper is in the same vein, but in a narrower domain given that cloud computing is a sub-domain of software engineering. It aims to highlight the challenges in the self-adaptation process of cloud-based applications in the perspective of control engineers.

The BYOD4L Project aims to revitalize interest in learning and teaching through open cross-institutional professional development. The project extends engagement in meaningful professional development that is useful for practice and creates opportunities for collaboration across institutions. It shares resources and expertise through an inquiry-based approach using social media in a framework of 5Cs (Connect, Converse, Construct, Contribute, and Confirm). Participation has grown from individuals in 2014 to include 9 higher education institutions and 2 partners by 2015. Feedback from participants indicates the power of collaborative development and an extended sense of community.

OpenCred: Recognition of non-formal learning in Europe
The OpenCred study investigates recognition of non-formal open learning in the EU. It identifies models for recognizing open learning and learners' perceptions. The study team includes researchers from the University of Leicester and the JRC. The study finds that robust assessment is key to recognition but can reduce openness if it is costly or limited to enrolled students. It also finds that open learning is currently recognized through partial qualifications rather than full credentials.

Robert Allen Goodrich Valderrama participated in the course "Workers' Rights in a Global Economy" from June to July 2015. The multi-disciplinary course was taught by academics and experts from the ILO and trade unions, and discussed global workers' rights and strategies for implementing them while providing both knowledge and practical skills. The Global Labour University is a network of trade unions, universities, and the ILO that delivers master's programs, and the Berlin School of Economics and Law is a German academic institution with expertise on labor issues as part of the GLU network.
Credit and Collaboration in MOOCs: Where are we now?
This presentation provides examples of collaboration and credit opportunities with MOOCs from around the world. It discusses scenarios where universities collaborate on developing and offering shared MOOCs, increasing enrollment for both, and how MOOCs can help non-traditional students earn credit to apply for degrees. Examples highlighted include collaborations between multiple institutions on FutureLearn courses and an online master's program partnership between Georgia Tech, Udacity, and AT&T.
