This document summarizes a presentation on damage and loss evaluation in performance-based wind engineering. It discusses:
1) An overview of the performance-based wind engineering (PBWE) procedure which includes hazard analysis, structural analysis, damage analysis, and loss analysis.
2) Models for assessing occupant comfort in tall buildings based on vibration thresholds.
3) An application of PBWE to a case study of a 74-floor high-rise building, including structural modeling, wind tunnel testing, and comfort assessment.
4) The document concludes by discussing indications for further research on this topic.
Back-analysis of the collapse of a metal truss structureFranco Bontempi
This paper is organized in two parts. The first one describes a case history of few collapses of metal truss structures designed to be used as entertainment structures for which the structural safety gains therefore much more importance due to the people that can be involved in the collapse. In the second part, a specific case of the collapse of an entertainment structure made by aluminum is taken under study. A back analysis of the collapse of this metal truss structure is developed and produces a flowchart that points out the possible causes that led the structure to the collapse. By means of non linear analyses by Finite Element Model (FEM) the failure sequence of this particular structure is shown and forensic investigation concerning the whole phase of the construction phase is performed, starting from the design one, through the assembling and ending with the rigging phase.

According to a performance-based design view, the entity of actions to be resisted
and the services levels to be maintained are the design objectives, which should be
defined by the stakeholders and by the designer in respect of the regulation in force.
For what said above, the structural integrity of wind turbines is a central issue
in the framework of a safe design: it depends on different factors, like exposure,
vulnerability and robustness. Particularly, the requirement of structural vulnerability
and robustness are discussed in this paper and a numerical application is presented,
in order to evaluate the effects of a ship collision on the structural system of an
offshore wind turbine.
The investigation resorts nonlinear dynamic analyses performed on the finite
element model of the turbine and considers three different scenarios for the ship
collision. The review of the investigation results allows for an evaluation of the
turbine structural integrity after the impact and permits to identify some
characteristics of the system, which are intrinsic to the chosen organization of the
elements within the structure.
Fragility analysis for the Performance-Based Design of cladding wall panels s...StroNGER2012
This paper presents a probabilistic method to support the design of cladding wall systems subjected to blast loads. The proposed method is based on the broadly adopted fragility analysis method (conditional approach), widely used in Performance-Based Design procedures for structures subjected to natural hazards like earthquake and wind. The cladding wall system under investigation is composed by non-load bearing precast concrete wall panels. From the blast design point of view, these wall panels must protect people and equipment from external detonations. The aim of this research is to compute both the fragility curves and the limit states exceedance probability of a typical precast concrete cladding wall panel considering the detonations of vehicle borne improvised explosive devices. Moreover, the limit states exceedance probability of the cladding wall panel is estimated by Monte Carlo simulation (unconditional approach) in order to validate the proposed fragility curves.

This research deals with the problem of the comfort assessment of high-rise building occupants under wind
action. Also if the problem has been studied by the researchers and by the civil engineering industry during last thirty years, appropriate methods to handling the design of high-rise buildings in order to avoid wind-induced occupant discomfort has not been defined yet, mainly due to the high uncertainties involved in the determination of both the demand and the sensitivity of the building occupants to wind-induced vibrations. The main issues related with this problem are first summarized, then the growing, pioneering performance-based wind engineering (PBWE) approach is proposed as tool to handle the problem. The required analyses are presented and discussed on both the conceptual and operational point of view. A case-study is then presented in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. In the PBWE view, the contribution of the work is focused on the procedural step identified as “damage analysis”, something that, in authors’ knowledge, has not been yet developed in the literature.

L’investigazione antincendio sugli aspetti strutturali: una proposta di codificaStroNGER2012
I numerosi incendi che si innescano e danneggiano
le strutture hanno rivoluzionato, da una parte,
molte procedure sulla prevenzione definendo metodologie
gestionali più efficaci e stanno, dall’altra,
portando ad affinare procedure investigative
codificate atte a ridurre il rischio di errori/omissioni
durante le indagini.
Lo scopo di questo articolo è quello di esporre
una metodologia codificata di Structural Fire Investigation
(Investigazione sugli aspetti strutturali in
caso di incendio) atta ad individuare le cause scatenanti,
pregresse e latenti, che hanno determinato
l’evento accidentale.
L’iter investigativo, associato a determinate operazioni
strutturali e forensi che partono dalla raccolta
delle informazioni iniziali al repertamento e
controllo documentale per poi completarsi con le
verifiche computazionali, sicuramente aiuta a determinare,
in maniera rigorosa, le cause e l’origine
di un incendio. La modellazione degli incendi con
il software del NIST, Fire Dynamics Simulator
(FDS) e l’analisi strutturale con vari codici di calcolo,
permettono di verificare determinate ipotesi
maturate durante il repertamento e di avvalorare
scientificamente l’analisi semiotica rilevata sulla
scena, fornendo dati forensi utili in fase dibattimentale.
Quindi un’attività investigativa pianificata, permette
a qualsiasi utente, (VV.F., personale delle Forze
dell’Ordine, Consulente, Perito, CTU o Libero
Professionista), di svolgere indagini in maniera appropriata
secondo una linea guida che permette
di non tralasciare controlli a volte rilevanti per la
stesura della documentazione complessiva in forma
di report finale.

Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

The problem of risk assessment is disaggregated into the following elements:
- site and structure-specific hazard analyses, that is, the assessment of the
probability density functions f(IM), f(SP) and f(IP|IM,SP);
- structural analysis, aiming at the assessment of the probability density function of
the structural response f(EDP|IM,IP,SP) conditional on the parameters characterizing the
environmental actions, the wind-fluid-structure interaction and the structural properties;
- damage analysis, that gives the damage probability density function f(DM|EDP)
conditional on EDP;
- finally, loss analysis, that is the assessment of G(DV|DM), where G(·|·) is a
conditional complementary cumulative distribution function.

• Occupant comfort is an important issue in the design of
tall buildings. Due to the stochastic nature of wind action
and wind-induced vibration, deterministic analyses are
inadequate for carrying out a comfort assessment.
• The insertion of passive control devices can reduce
the vibration perception of building occupants. But the
effectiveness of the device must be evaluated in terms of
cost (by computing the probability of exceeding
acceptable values of an appropriate DV).
• Damage and loss analysis of wind-induced vibrations
will be based on corroborated literature studies that
provide statistics on the occupant comfort.

- First, I will provide an overview of the PBWE procedure, as it has been defined in several studies and journal papers by my co-author Dr. Petrini In the second part of my presentation I will briefly discuss models for the occupant comfort assessment in high-rise buildings Finally, I will introduce some considerations for the extension of the application of the PBWE framework to the Damage and Loss analysis from vibration discomfort in high-rise buildings. This is a work in process by me with my co-authors.
The structural risk is conventionally measured by the probability of exceeding a relevant value of the corresponding DV . A simplification is introduced: If the performance is expressed by the fulfillment of a limit state , and the limit state condition in terms of an EDP , the whole procedure can be simplified assuming DV = EDP .
The assessment of the serviceability of high-rise buildings under wind actions is usually carried out considering the peak values of the horizontal displacements, some measure of the acceleration . Horizontal displacements shall be limited to prevent loss of integrity to cladding and partitions ; the acceleration measure and the building natural frequencies are essential to determine the level of perception of motion , and in general the habitability issue under building vibrations. the occupant motion perception can be related to body sensation and/or visual cues; in general, the perception related to body sensation is dominant in case of low frequency vibrations (less than 2 Hz) , while the perception related to visual cues is dominant in case of relatively high frequency vibrations (greater than 2 Hz). The Italian code adopts the Japanese curves. What you do is enter the graph with the first natural frequency of the structure and see the acceptance rate of the accelerations.
The examined high-rise steel building has a square plan (side length: B = 50 m) and a total height of 305 m; the number of floors is 74. The main structural system is composed by a central core (a 3D frame with 16 columns) and a 3D frame on the external perimeter (28 columns). The two substructures are connected at three levels (at the height of 100 m, 200 m and 300 m); the stiffening systems are extended for 3 or 2 floors . The structural analyses have been carried out on a FE model of the building implemented in ANSYS V11; the FE model is composed by 7592 BEAM4 elements and 2680 LINK8 elements Linear dynamic analyses , assuming rigid diaphragms
Forse togliere The time series of the floor forces have been obtained by wind tunnel tests on a 1:500 scale rigid model (Fig. left ), that have been carried out at the Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel of the CRIACIV (Inter-university Research Centre on Buildings Aerodynamics and Wind Engineering) in Prato, Italy. However, in order to carry out probabilistic calculations, in the linear range it is preferable (at least, to reduce the computational burden) to analyze the structural response in the frequency domain , by adopting the previously introduced analytical model of the wind action.

Here the TMD has been inserted at the top of the building and the structural response is represented in terms of occupant comfort. The TMD produces two main effects: the variation of the structural natural frequency, and a reduction in maximum the response. Here the maximum across wind acceleration obtained for different sets of TMD design parameters are shown and compared with the comfort thresholds. Each figure represents a different mass ratio “gamma”, different markers represent different natural frequency ratios “beta” and different points with the same marker represent different damping ratios “csi”. The maximum effect is obtained by “gamma” equal to 1/150, “Beta” equal to 1 and “csi” equal to 10%
